Chapter 19 - 19. School reunion

Sophia received a message from her best friend, Lily, inviting her to a school reunion. The gathering was being hosted by one of their old male classmates, Jason, who had insisted on covering all the expenses. It had been years since they'd all been together, so Sophia decided to go, curious to see how everyone had changed.

When she arrived at the venue, a trendy rooftop bar, she was greeted by warm smiles and enthusiastic hugs. The atmosphere was lively, with everyone reminiscing about the old days and sharing stories of their current lives. People were boasting about their careers, families, and travels, each trying to outdo the other in subtle and not-so-subtle ways.

Sophia, however, kept a low profile. She hadn't told anyone much about her life, other than that she was married. No one knew who her husband was or anything about his background. She preferred it that way, enjoying the anonymity.

As the night wore on, Jason, the one who had organized and paid for the reunion, was called upon by a few of his friends to give a speech. With a smug smile, he stood up, clearly reveling in the attention.

"Well, it's great to see everyone doing so well," Jason began, his voice carrying a hint of arrogance. "I've been fortunate too. My company is doing phenomenally—record-breaking profits this year, expansion into several new markets, and, well, let's just say business is booming."

A few people clapped politely, while others exchanged knowing looks. Jason had always been the type to flaunt his success, but tonight he seemed particularly intent on making an impression.

As he continued to talk about his accomplishments, Jason's eyes found Sophia across the table. The memory of how she had rejected him back in school still stung, and tonight, he was determined to have the upper hand.

"You know," Jason said, his tone turning more pointed, "it's funny how life works out. Some people achieve great things, while others…" He let his words hang in the air, his gaze lingering on Sophia. "…well, they end up marrying whoever they can find, I guess."

Sophia felt the sting of his words but decided to keep her composure. She didn't want to cause a scene and thought it best to let the comment slide. However, Jason's friends, clearly emboldened by his words, decided to take things further.

"Hey, Sophia!" one of them called out, smirking. "How about giving us a little entertainment? A song? A dance? Come on, let's see some talent!"

Sophia was about to politely decline when Lily, who had been sitting quietly until now, couldn't take it anymore. She slammed her drink down on the table, causing everyone to jump.

"Enough!" Lily's voice was sharp, and the room fell silent as all eyes turned to her. "Do you have any idea who Sophia's husband is? You're all here flaunting your little successes, but let me tell you, they're nothing compared to the kind of life Sophia leads."

Jason's smug expression faltered slightly, but he quickly tried to recover. "Oh really? And who might that be?"

Lily looked him square in the eyes, her voice dripping with disdain. "Let's just say that the guest list at their wedding read like the Forbes top 100. We're talking about billionaires, CEOs of major corporations, and even royalty. I don't know all the details because Sophia's too modest to brag, but I do know that her husband's connections and influence make your little company look like a lemonade stand."

The color drained from Jason's face as Lily continued, "So before you start throwing around insults and trying to humiliate her, you might want to think twice. Because trust me, you don't want to cross the kind of people Sophia's married into."

Jason's friends shifted uncomfortably in their seats, suddenly realizing the gravity of their mistake. Jason himself looked like he wanted to disappear. He stammered an apology, his earlier bravado completely gone.

"Sophia, I… I didn't mean any disrespect," Jason mumbled, his voice barely audible. "I'm sorry if I offended you."

Sophia gave him a small, gracious smile. "It's fine, Jason. Let's just enjoy the evening."

The tension in the room slowly dissipated as the conversation moved on to other topics. But the atmosphere had definitely shifted, with everyone now treating Sophia with a newfound respect, or at least caution.

As the night came to a close and they all began to say their goodbyes, Jason made a point of approaching Sophia one last time. "Sophia, really, I didn't know… I shouldn't have said those things. I hope there are no hard feelings."

Sophia looked at him for a moment, then smiled softly. "No hard feelings, Jason. Just be careful who you underestimate in the future."

With that, she turned to leave with Lily by her side. As they walked out of the bar, Lily nudged her playfully. "Well, that was satisfying, wasn't it?"

Sophia chuckled. "I wasn't expecting any of that, but thank you for stepping in. I guess some people never change."

Lily grinned. "What are best friends for? But seriously, Sophia, you don't have to hide how amazing your life is. You've earned every bit of happiness you have."

Sophia smiled, appreciating Lily's words. "I know. I just like keeping some things private. But tonight was… interesting, to say the least."

They walked out into the night, laughing and chatting, with Sophia feeling grateful for having a friend like Lily in her life. The reunion had taken an unexpected turn, but in the end, it only served to remind Sophia how far she had come, and how lucky she was to have Lucas and true friends by her side.

Later that evening, when Sophia got home, she found Lucas waiting for her. He had already heard about what happened from Lily, who had texted him right after the incident.

"Hey," Lucas greeted her with a knowing smile. "How was the reunion?"

Sophia laughed as she walked over to him, wrapping her arms around his neck. "Eventful. But let's just say I'm glad to be home."

Lucas held her close, kissing her forehead. "I'm glad you're home too. So, how about we unwind with a quiet night in? I had some wine delivered, and I've been dying to hear all about your evening."

Sophia smiled up at him, feeling all the stress of the day melt away in his arms. "That sounds perfect."

As they settled in for the night, Sophia couldn't help but feel that, despite everything that had happened, she was exactly where she was meant to be.
