Chapter 21 - 21. An injured kitten

On the way home, as Sophia and Lucas were stopped at a traffic light, Sophia's eyes caught something small and huddled by the side of the road. Squinting to see better in the dim light, she realized it was a tiny, injured kitten, shivering and looking utterly helpless.

"Lucas, look!" Sophia pointed towards the kitten, her voice filled with concern. "That poor little thing is hurt. We need to help it."

Lucas glanced over, his brow furrowing in concern. "Are you sure it's safe, Sophia? We don't know if it's sick or if it could have something contagious."

Sophia was already unbuckling her seatbelt. "I can't just leave it there. It needs help." Without waiting for Lucas to respond, she pulled over to the side of the road and got out of the car.

Lucas watched as Sophia carefully approached the kitten, speaking to it in a soft, soothing tone. She gently picked it up, cradling it in her arms as she returned to the car. The kitten barely moved, but its tiny body was trembling with fear and cold.

"Poor thing," Sophia murmured as she settled back into the passenger seat, holding the kitten close to her chest. "We need to get it home and take care of it."

Lucas sighed, but there was a fondness in his eyes as he watched her. "Alright, let's take it home. But we're going to the vet first thing tomorrow to make sure it's okay."

Sophia nodded, grateful. "Thank you, Lucas. I knew you'd understand."

That night, back at their home, Lucas couldn't help but ask a few questions as he watched Sophia tenderly care for the kitten. "You've really got a soft spot for animals, don't you?"

Sophia smiled as she gently cleaned the kitten's fur with a warm, damp cloth. "I've always loved animals. They're so innocent, and they rely on us to take care of them. I couldn't just leave it out there."

Lucas leaned against the doorframe, watching her with a mixture of curiosity and admiration. "You know, most people would've just driven past. But you stopped, took it in, and now you're playing nurse."

Sophia looked up at him, her expression determined. "It's the right thing to do. Besides, look at this little face." She held the kitten up slightly, showing Lucas its small, round eyes peeking out from its fur.

Lucas chuckled. "Alright, I can't argue with that. But we're taking it to the vet first thing tomorrow, no exceptions."

"Of course," Sophia agreed. "And I'll need to pick up some supplies from the pet store. This little one will need food, a bed, and some toys."

The next morning, true to her word, Sophia took the kitten to the vet. Lucas insisted on coming along, despite his busy schedule, just to make sure everything was handled properly.

At the vet's office, the doctor examined the kitten carefully, giving it a clean bill of health apart from a few minor injuries. "You've got a tough little guy here," the vet said with a smile. "He's lucky you found him when you did."

Sophia beamed with relief. "Thank you so much, doctor. I'll make sure he's well taken care of."

After the vet visit, they headed to the pet store. Sophia moved through the aisles with purpose, picking out everything the kitten might need. Lucas followed her, pushing the shopping cart with a slightly amused expression.

"You're really going all out for this little guy," Lucas remarked as Sophia added a plush cat bed to the cart.

"Well, he deserves it," Sophia replied. "He's part of the family now, right?"

Lucas couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm. "Yeah, I suppose he is. But don't expect me to be the one cleaning the litter box."

Sophia laughed, a warm, joyful sound that made Lucas's heart swell. "Don't worry, I've got that covered."

By the time they returned home, their arms were full of pet supplies, and the kitten had already started to explore its new surroundings. Sophia set up a cozy corner for him, complete with a soft bed and a few toys. She watched with satisfaction as the kitten curled up in its new bed, looking far more content than it had the night before.

Lucas wrapped his arms around Sophia from behind as they both watched the kitten settle in. "You did good, Sophia. He's lucky to have you."

Sophia leaned back into Lucas, a smile on her face. "No, Lucas. I'm lucky to have you—for letting me do this."

Lucas kissed the top of her head. "Anything for you. Now, how about we order in tonight and spend some time with our new housemate?"

Sophia turned around in his arms, wrapping hers around his neck. "That sounds perfect."

And as they settled in for the evening, the kitten purring softly in its bed, Sophia felt an overwhelming sense of contentment. She had everything she needed—Lucas, their cozy home, and now, a little furball to love and care for. It was a simple moment, but one she knew she'd treasure for a long time.
