Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: What's Wrong With Her...

As the autumn leaves painted the landscape in vibrant hues of red and gold, preparations for the annual Fall Festival were in full swing at the Chika Palace. This year, it was their turn to host the grand event, a time-honored tradition that brought together all four clans in celebration and unity.

The palace grounds bustled with activity. Servants hung lanterns in the trees, their soft glow promising to cast a magical ambiance over the evening festivities. Elaborate pavilions were erected in the gardens, each adorned with the emblems of the four clans: Chika, Kokoro, Nami, and Takeshimego.

Kaito oversaw the preparations with a keen eye, aware of the political implications of hosting such a gathering. The Fall Festival was more than just a celebration; it was an opportunity to strengthen alliances, discuss matters of state, and showcase the strength and prosperity of the Chika clan.

Word had arrived that King Mari of the Kokoro clan, King Masahiko of the Nami clan, and King Izimaru of the Takeshimego clan would be attending with their young heirs, wives, and prominent families. The guest list read like a who's who of the Living Realm's elite, adding to the pressure of ensuring everything was perfect.

As the day of the festival drew near, an air of excitement and tension permeated the palace. Yasushi could hardly contain his enthusiasm, eagerly sharing tales of previous festivals with Kaname, who listened with wide-eyed wonder from the confines of her secluded room.

Amidst the flurry of activity, Kaito found himself increasingly preoccupied with thoughts of Kaname. The impending arrival of the other clans heightened his concerns about her unique nature and the potential risks her presence posed.

On the eve of the festival, as the sun dipped below the horizon and the first stars began to twinkle in the sky, Kaito sought out Airi in their master chambers. The time had come to address his growing unease about their adopted daughter.

Airi stood in the spacious closet, her fingers trailing over a selection of exquisite kimonos, each a work of art in its own right. The decadent rustle of silk filled the air as she contemplated her choice for the opening ceremony.

"Airi, do you think there's something wrong with Kaname?" Kaito hesitantly inquired. He leaned against the wall, arms crossed with one foot propped against it, his posture betraying his unease.

"Hmm... Why do you ask?" Airi replied, her tone indifferent as she selected a kimono of deep blue silk adorned with delicate silver embroidery.

Frustration flickered across Kaito's face at his wife's apparent lack of concern. He moved to help her with the kimono, his hands deftly adjusting the fabric as he spoke. "Well, for starters, she's oddly quiet at times, yet undoubtedly advanced for her age. She possesses all of the intuitive skills of a warrior, but her combat skills are at most mediocre. More pressingly, I'm concerned that she does not possess the capability of controlling elements."

Airi turned to face Kaito, placing both hands on his chest. The kimono, half-draped around her, shimmered in the soft light. "You should give Kaname more credit, you know. She's actually very exceptional, intelligent, and a fast learner. So what if she hasn't exhibited a birth element?"

She then shrugged, turning away from Kaito, dismissing his concerns with a wave of her hand. "Plus, Yasushi is happy with her as she is. They're practically inseparable. There's nothing to worry about. She'll be fine."

Kaito's frustration began to boil as he continued to help dress Airi, his movements becoming more abrupt as he adjusted the folds of her kimono. "How can you be so indifferent about this! Doesn't it bother you we no nothing of her background? A child her age should have at least experienced their awakening. It's the fucking basics!"

His voice echoed in the spacious chamber, the tension palpable in the air. The clan insignia on the floor seemed to pulse in response to his agitation.

Airi sighed, placing a calming hand on Kaito's arm. "Calm down, Kaito. Kaname isn't like everyone else in this realm. Give her time."

Before Kaito could respond, the master chamber's door burst open with a bang. Yasushi rushed in, his eyes wide with confidence and determination etched on his face.

"FATHER! I'M NOT GOING!!'" Yasushi shouted, his voice consumed with a mixture of aggravation and apprehension.

Kaito turned to his son, his earlier frustration increasing. The interruption shifted the atmosphere in the room, the family's attention now split between the impending festival and the unresolved concerns about Kaname. "Why? I thought you got along relatively well with the young heirs."

"I... It's... It's not that," Yasushi stammered, sighing heavily as he dropped to the floor. His shoulders slumped in defeat. "I don't wanna go without Kaname. We always leave her alone, locked in her room, while everyone is at the festival. I hate it. I don't understand why she can't come with us!"

Kaito's patience, already worn thin from his earlier discussion with Airi, began to fray. "Yasushi, Stop! You're getting too old to throw these childish tantrums. How many times do you expect me to answer the same damn question!"

The tension in the room escalated, the air thick with unspoken emotions. Airi watched the exchange silently, her half-dressed state momentarily forgotten.

"But Father...!!" Yasushi wailed at his now visibly annoyed father, standing up to face him. The determination in his eyes mirrored Kaito's own stubbornness.

Before Yasushi could continue voicing his discontent, the door opened quietly. Kaname walked in, her presence immediately shifting the atmosphere in the room. The silver-haired child stood there, her fierce eyes taking in the scene before her.

Kaname calmly strolled over to Yasushi, holding a teddy bear in one hand and grabbing his hand with the other. "Yasu? Are you okay?"

Yasushi's face lightened at Kaname's touch. "Kana.." his voice tinged with frustration and sadness. "I just want you to see the fireworks and have fun at the festival with me... just like everyone else."

Kaito's frustration finally boiled over. His fist suddenly slammed against the wall, the impact vibrating through the chamber. "Son! It's just not possible!" he bellowed, his patience worn thin.

The room fell silent, the tension tangible. Yasushi flinched at his father's outburst, while Kaname's eyes widened in surprise.

Airi, her face a mix of irritation and determination, grabbed Kaito's arm. She forced him to face her, her eyes locked onto his. "Enough," she mouthed silently, shaking her head from side to side. Her grip tightened, a silent plea for him to regain his composure.

Kaito held her gaze for a moment before reluctantly nodding. He looked down, avoiding his wife's stern glare. "I need to leave and monitor security for tonight's festival," he muttered, his voice low and strained.

Taking a deep breath, Kaito turned back to his son. His eyes grew harsh, the earlier anger replaced by a cold authority. "I expect everyone to be at the designated areas to welcome our guests. No exceptions!" The words hung heavy in the air, brooking no argument.

Yasushi quivered under his father's intense gaze, immediately shifting his eyes downward in defeat. The confidence that had empowered him moments ago was replaced by a resigned acceptance.

Then, as if a switch had been flipped, Kaito's expression slightly softened as his attention turned to Kaname. He placed his hand gently on her head, his touch a stark contrast to his earlier outburst. "Kaname, dear. Please go to your room after your training concludes. For the remainder of the day, you will stay there. Dinner will be brought to you."

Staring into her eyes, Kaito paused. A hint of regret seeped through his voice as he continued, "I'm sorry, but Airi and I won't be able to read you a bedtime story tonight, but I promise to make it up to you."

"Okay!" Kaname giggled, as he shuffled her hair. Kaito's momentarily expression became stern as he turned to Yasushi, frustration still evident in his eyes. Yasushi met his father's glare with defiant irritation, the air between them thick with unresolved tension.

Without another word, Kaito strode out of the master's chamber, his footsteps echoing down the hallway as he left to attend to his duties. The sudden absence of his commanding presence left a noticeable void in the room.

With her kimono now fully adorned, Airi walked over to the children and knelt before them. Her movements were graceful, a stark contrast to the earlier tension. Yasushi was still visibly grappling with his emotions, his young face filled with disappointment.

"I know it's not fair, Yasushi," Airi said softly, her voice engulfed with understanding. "But it's for Kaname's safety that she stays within the palace. She can't defend herself if anything happens."

Yasushi looked to his mother, holding Kaname's hand tightly, his eyes blazing with determination. "Then what's the point of having guards if they can't do their job, Mother? Nothing will happen because I can protect her!"

Airi's lips curved into a knowing smirk. "I'm sorry, son... Your father and I just aren't willing to take the risk. I mean, after all, is Kaname not your future wife?"

At these words, Yasushi's face turned beet red, small streams of smoke seemingly spurting from his head. Airi's laughter enveloped the room, lightening the mood. "Focus on taking care of Kaname and spending time with her while you still can."

Yasushi looked down at Kaname, who was smiling proudly up at him. Her eyes sparkled with admiration, and Yasushi felt the built-up irritation melting away. "Kana, I'll come back to you as soon as the festival is over. I'll bring you back tons of gifts and a new teddy bear." He smiled back at her, confirming the silent promise passing between them.

Kaname chuckled softly, her eyes twinkling with affection.

"KANAME!" a loud voice suddenly boomed from behind. "Break's over. It's time for you to resume your training. We need to go."

Kaname immediately lets go of Yasushi's hand, obeying the command without hesitation. She swiftly exited the master's chambers, running over to meet Captain Haru who stood several feet outside of the master's chamber.

"Haru, I'm coming as well," Airi asserted as she stood. "Yasushi, please finish getting ready for the festival. Our guests will be here soon."

"Yes, mother," Yasushi replied, a hint of resignation present in his voice.

Airi walked towards Kaname, took her hand, and followed behind Haru. Yasushi watched Kaname depart, anxiety slowly growing within him at the prospect of their separation. As Kaname turned away, her earlier smile vanished, replaced by a cold, emotionless glare.

"Your majesty," Haru whispered once they were out of earshot. "Are you certain we shouldn't inform Kaito? He has the right to know."

Airi, stonily looking forward, annoyed by Haru's suggestion. "He'll be informed in due time. As of right now, let's focus on Kaname's training."

Haru's jaw slightly clenched, his face tightened in acknowledgment of Airi's dismissal of his question. He continued to lead the way, his posture rigid with unresolved tension. Airi followed, her hand now on Kaname's shoulder, guiding the child with gentle but firm pressure.

As they walked through the palace's lavish hallways, their footsteps reflected off the polished marble floors. Ornate tapestries depicting the Chika clan's history adorned the walls, scattered with gleaming suits of armor. The air brimmed with the scent of incense and the distant sounds of festival preparations.

They turned down a less frequented corridor, the decor becoming noticeably plainer. The marble gave way to smooth stone, and the elaborate tapestries were replaced by simple wall sconces. As they progressed, the sounds of the festival preparations faded, replaced by an eerie silence.

At the end of this hallway stood an unremarkable wooden door, its surface weathered and nondescript. Haru produced a key from within his robes, its intricate design at odds with the simple door. With a soft click, the lock disengaged, revealing a hidden passageway.

The passage beyond was narrow and dimly lit, a stark contrast to the palace's grandeur. Rough-hewn stone steps led downward, disappearing into shadows. Faint, flickering light from wall-mounted torches cast dancing shadows on the walls, creating an atmosphere of secrecy and foreboding. The passage twisted and turned, designed to disorient any who might accidentally stumble upon it.

As they descended, the air grew cooler and damper. The stone walls bore no decoration except for the occasional etching of the Chika clan symbol, a reminder of the clan's presence even in this hidden place. This hidden route, known only to a select few, led to the heart of Kaname's clandestine training.

Eventually, they emerged into a vast, abandoned dungeon. Ancient stone walls loomed around them, their surfaces rough and weathered by time. Wooden torches lining the walls sprang to life as they entered, casting flickering shadows that danced across the cold stone floor.

At the center of this cavernous space, the massive Chika clan insignia was carved deep into the stone. Kaname walked towards the insignia, her small figure dwarfed by the immense space around her. She took a deep breath, her eyes piercing with focus as she awaited what was to come.

Dark energy began to seep from Airi's body, a sight that caused Haru to shift uncomfortably. She opened her palms, and a massive double-edged ancient slowly manifested in her hands. Airi smiled with pride as Kaname stood ready, unflinching in the face of the imposing weapon.

Haru looked at Airi, his eyes questioning the ethics of what they were about to do. Sensing his wavering obedience, Airi shot him a glance from the corner of her eye, her gaze engulfed with such malice that Haru quickly reaffirmed and solidified his position. He raised his hand, creating a fireball that cast an eerie glow across the dungeon.

Airi's smirk deepened as she turned her focus back to Kaname. The air crackled with tension and silent intentions.

"Let's begin!"
