The sound of the event hammered in my ears as I battled to remain with the crowd's flow. My heart surged with the biting edge of terror rather than with exhilaration. Alyssa had disappeared into the wave of people, her form sucked into the tumult. behind my breath, I swore, moving past celebrants unaware of the danger lurking just behind their surface of celebration. "Where is she?," said I mumbled, eyes flying wildly from face to face in search of her dark hair, the gleam of her dagger. But all I saw were masks, vivid and cheerful, covering the actual character of the individuals under them.
