Alyssa's POV.
Whipped past my face, the night air was harsh and frigid. As we sprinted across the thick woodland encircling the castle, I battled to keep up with Elias. Not only from the effort but also from the maelstrom of emotions raging inside me.
My heart hammered. Anxiety, uncertainty, resentment—all of them colliding to make it difficult to breathe, to think. At last we arrived at a little clearing, and Elias stopped. My legs shaking, I staggered forward panting for breath. Trying to ground myself, I leaned against a tree, but my mind was racing.
"who was he? Why had he pitched in to assist? And to me, what did he mean?" Elias turned to face me, the pale moonlight flashing back.
