I leaned down, buried in the thick underbrush, and smelt pine and soil. I could see the little clearing where Elias was teaching her, the girl on my thoughts for longer than I would have wanted to confess. Ashley. the hybrid child. My breath stopped as I watched her fight to regulate her strength.
More powerful than she knew, more powerful than any of them knew she was. And that terrified me as well. Knowing what that kind of power could do if it were unbridled terrified me.
Guiding her through another exercise, Elias was speaking to her in that cool, controlled tone. I could see Alyssa was annoyed. She moved jerking, her shoulders tight.
