Chapter 8 - the first key

Tatsuya's journey to the Blood Temple stretched on in an eerie silence, broken only by the whispering wind through barren branches and the crunch of his footsteps against the forest floor. The box in his satchel felt heavier with each step, as if it had awoken with ancient power, aware of the looming confrontation ahead. The old sorcerer's words echoed in his mind: "You are not the only one seeking the box."

The deeper he ventured into the forest, the darker the surroundings became. The towering trees, their roots sprawling like claws, seemed to consume everything in their path, blocking out the sky and leaving only sparse beams of light to filter through the dense canopy. A chilling atmosphere permeated the air, hinting at something sinister lying in wait.

Tatsuya pressed forward, but this time, fear no longer gripped him. Each step he took was grounded in purpose, and his senses were sharper than ever before. The rustling leaves, the wind's whistle through the trees, even the subtle movements of hidden creatures it all felt vivid, almost amplified. No longer lost, he felt a connection to the world around him, and with that came a newfound strength.

The path to the Blood Temple finally emerged, cloaked in shadow and silence. Suddenly, a gust of cold wind flickered the oil lamp in Tatsuya's hand. He felt it the presence of something, no, someone nearby. His eyes darted around the room, searching for the one who was watching him. A sensation of danger washed over him, urging him to tighten his grip on the sword at his side.

"Tatsuya..." A faint, delicate voice whispered from behind him, like a breath carried on the wind. He turned swiftly, his eyes widening as they met the figure of a woman standing before him. She had pale skin and her eyes were filled with fear and desperation.

"Who are you?" Tatsuya demanded, forcing his voice to remain steady.

The woman didn't answer immediately. She stared intently at him, as if struggling to recall something of great importance. Finally, she whispered, "I am the spirit of this temple. Once worshipped as a god by the people here, but no longer."

"You're the spirit of this temple?" Tatsuya asked, suspicion creeping into his voice. "Why didn't I see you the last time I was here?"

The spirit looked at him, her expression unreadable. "You came charging in like a bull, with such recklessness that even I had to hide. It's a wonder you didn't bring the entire temple down with your clumsy actions."

Tatsuya couldn't help but smile faintly at the bluntness of her words before he focused again, now searching the ruined temple for any clues. Everything seemed more broken than the last time he was here. The once-solid walls now lay in rubble, and the ancient symbols etched into the stones were worn down by time or perhaps by the recent battle that had taken place.

"What happened here?" Tatsuya asked, scanning the debris for signs of something sinister.

The temple spirit gazed at him for a long moment before answering in a somber tone. "After you left, intruders came. They sought the box, believing it was still hidden within these walls. They heard of your presence here and assumed the box remained."

Tatsuya felt a heavy weight settle in his chest as he listened. His presence had drawn unwanted attention, and that had led to the destruction of this sacred place. He clenched his fists, a burning determination swelling within him. He would find those responsible and protect whatever remained of the temple's secrets.

"Did they find anything?" Tatsuya asked, the concern evident in his eyes. But then a deeper question hit him. How did they know he had been here? The sense of danger around him grew sharper, transforming from a lingering unease into a rising storm of dread.

"You said they found nothing," Tatsuya said slowly, "but how did they even know I was here? Who told them?"

The temple spirit bowed her head, sorrow washing over her pale features. "I do not know. I am bound to this temple, unable to leave, unable to interfere with the world beyond. But I can feel the pain, the destruction, and the malice of those who trespass here."

Tatsuya looked around at the shattered remnants of the temple. Each crack in the stone, each piece of fallen rubble seemed to whisper tales of the violence that had befallen this sacred ground. His arrival had inadvertently brought this destruction, and now he had to face the consequences. But Tatsuya knew the temple still held secrets, and he couldn't leave until he uncovered them.

He continued his search, carefully sifting through the debris. Nothing escaped his notice not the shattered fragments of statues that once stood tall, nor the crumbled bricks strewn across the floor. Everything seemed to tell a story of a place that had once witnessed great power but had now fallen into decay.

As Tatsuya approached a collapsed wall near the center of the temple, something caught his eye. A glint of metal, reflecting the dim light from his lamp, shone through the rubble. He cautiously brushed aside the broken stones, revealing a small, ornate piece of metal hidden within the wreckage. It looked like a key, intricately carved with patterns he recognized instantly. The markings were identical to the ones on the box he carried.

Tatsuya held the key in his hand, wiping away the dust and dirt that clung to its surface. The metal was cold to the touch, but it thrummed with an energy he could feel deep within. As he examined the complex designs, he realized something incredible: this wasn't just any key it was the first piece that could unlock the box's initial seal.

The temple spirit appeared beside him, her eyes wide with surprise. "You've found it," she whispered, her voice filled with emotion. "That is the first key to unlock the secrets of the box. Mori hid it here, hoping only the worthy would uncover it."

"You knew about Mori?" Tatsuya asked, his voice sharp. "Oh sorry, im fogot. You're a god of this temple, why didn't you just tell me where it was?"

The spirit gazed at him with a sorrowful smile before softly responding, "I knew of Mori, but even gods must follow certain rules. This temple holds ancient secrets, and to protect them, even I am bound by laws greater than myself. I couldn't guide you directly because your journey requires you to discover things on your own. Only those who confront their challenges and find the answers themselves are truly worthy of the power they seek."

She paused for a moment, allowing her words to sink in before her expression changed. The fragility she had shown earlier was replaced by a newfound strength and determination.

"But now that you've proven your resolve by finding the first key, I can offer you more assistance. My power is no longer restricted as it was before. I will accompany you and aid you on your path. Together, we will face the trials that await."

With that, the spirit floated upward, her form glowing softly with an ethereal light. She wrapped herself around Tatsuya like a protective veil, her presence now stronger than ever. She was no longer a faint, fearful ghost but a revitalized deity, brimming with divine power.

"Come," she said, her voice now firm and commanding. "The road ahead is filled with danger, but together, we will overcome it all."

Tatsuya nodded, his own resolve strengthening alongside hers. With the first key in hand and the spirit by his side, he was ready to face whatever awaited him in the depths of the Blood Temple.

Together, they stepped forward, prepared to confront the darkness and unlock the ancient mysteries that still lay hidden within.
