The early morning sunlight filtered through the lush green leaves, creating shimmering rays that danced across the forest floor. Tatsuya woke in absolute peace, the warmth from the previous night's dreams still lingering in his heart. He sat up, leaning his back against the massive ancient tree, feeling the gentle breeze tousling his hair, carrying the scent of wildflowers and damp earth.
This forest felt different. There was no lurking danger in the shadows, no distant growls of wild beasts just the quiet harmony of nature. Everything seemed to have paused, as if the entire forest was slumbering in a deep, tranquil dream. Similarly, the ancient spirit, Aiko, who had been accompanying him, now slept soundly within the mysterious box, resting to regain her strength.
Slowly, Tatsuya rose to his feet, gazing at the scene around him. Everything appeared with a vividness rarely seen. The vibrant greenery of the leaves, the wildflowers blooming in full color, their scent filling the air, while small streams wound their way through the rocks, adding a gentle, soothing sound to the surroundings.
He walked through the untouched paths of the forest, feeling the earth and stones beneath his feet, each blade of grass brushing against his skin. The wind whispered through the trees, leaves rustling softly in their ancient language. Occasionally, he stopped to admire a peculiar flower or to listen to the sweet songs of the birds perched high above.
The peace of the forest was so enveloping that Tatsuya almost forgot everything that had happened before brutal battles, dangerous confrontations, and the long, arduous journey he had endured. All of it seemed to fade away in the soft light of the early morning, leaving him with a rare sense of serenity.
But that feeling did not last. As he ventured deeper into the forest, something strange began to occur. The surroundings slowly transformed, no longer the familiar paths he had just walked. The ground turned muddy, thick underbrush blocked the light, and the once cheerful bird songs faded into silence, replaced by strange noises in the distance, like the soft footsteps of something or someone following him.
The tranquility vanished, replaced by a growing tension. Tatsuya halted, sensing something was off. He turned his head, scanning the area around him, but there was nothing to see. The forest remained as silent as ever, yet something felt wrong. A creeping threat, unseen but palpable, lingered in the air.
"Wake up, kid," Aiko's urgent voice cut through his thoughts, rousing him instantly.
Tatsuya jolted awake, eyes wide as he realized he was still lying beneath the ancient tree. The surroundings were still as peaceful as before, but something had clearly disturbed Aiko, an ancient spirit seasoned by countless experiences.
"Stay alert, kid," Aiko's voice came again, this time sharper. "Something is stalking us."
Quickly, Tatsuya sat up and slipped on his brass knuckles, assuming a defensive stance. He scanned the area, eyes narrowing as he examined every shadow, but there was nothing visibly out of place. Yet the air had grown heavy with tension, the peaceful atmosphere now replaced by an eerie silence. Tatsuya clenched his fists around the cold metal, the sensation grounding him.
He could feel the danger, but he refused to let fear overwhelm him. He had faced many trials before, and no matter what, he would not be defeated by this invisible menace.
"What do we do?" Tatsuya asked, bracing himself for whatever was to come.
"First, we move," Aiko suggested. "If something's truly tracking us, staying in one place is the worst thing to do."
Nodding in agreement, Tatsuya stood and began to walk, carefully making each step as quiet and deliberate as possible. The forest no longer felt like a safe haven it had become a place of unseen threats, the air thick with anticipation, as though the entire forest was holding its breath for something terrible to happen.
Suddenly, a sharp sound broke the silence. Something was moving swiftly toward Tatsuya, and he could feel the danger as it focused entirely on him. Reacting instinctively, he braced himself to confront the imminent threat.
Though he couldn't see the attacker, he could sense its approach shifts in the wind, vibrations in the earth. Thanks to the grueling training in the blacksmith's village, the combat wisdom he had gained from the mysterious tome, and his time spent sparring with the old mage, Tatsuya had honed his senses to a razor's edge.
"Argh!" A stream of bright red blood shot out, Tatsuya dodged the attack but still felt a sharp sting as something grazed his left arm. He hadn't seen what struck him.
"Watch out! It's going for your throat!" Aiko warned.
"I've got it!" Tatsuya said, focusing his senses. Though he couldn't see his attacker, he could hear the subtle sounds of movement and feel the faint changes in the air. Taking a deep breath, he attuned himself to the forest, using every heightened instinct to predict where the next strike would come from.
Another sudden gust of wind rushed past him, and Tatsuya felt the presence of his foe drawing closer. He quickly leaped to the right, simultaneously swinging his brass-knuckled fist toward the source of the danger. The force of his strike connected with something soft yet unnervingly firm, like the body of an invisible creature.
A yelp of pain echoed through the clearing, followed by a brief shimmer of light, revealing the silhouette of a wolf-like creature with skin as hard as metal.
Wasting no time, Tatsuya pressed his advantage, unleashing a flurry of powerful blows. Each strike landed with precision and force, weakening the invisible creature. With every hit, the wolf's shape became more defined until it collapsed, defeated and no longer cloaked in invisibility.
Breathing heavily, Tatsuya surveyed the forest, feeling the tension slowly ease from the air as the sense of danger ebbed away.
"Impressive, kid," Aiko said, her voice now filled with relief. "But that's no ordinary creature. That was a Voidfang Wolf."
"A Voidfang Wolf?" Tatsuya repeated, still catching his breath.
"Yes," Aiko confirmed. "They travel in packs. And they don't belong in this forest. Someone must have released it here intentionally. We need to leave, and fast."
Realizing the gravity of the situation, Tatsuya wasted no time. He sprinted through the forest, his senses attuned to every movement around him. His feet moved in sync with the rhythm of the forest, feeling each gust of wind, hearing each rustle of leaves, and sensing even the faintest tremor beneath his feet. Though the tension had not fully dissipated, Tatsuya's mind remained sharp and alert, unwilling to let fear cloud his judgment.
After running for what felt like hours, Tatsuya finally slowed down, taking a deep breath as the peace of the forest seemed to return. But deep inside, he knew that greater dangers still lay ahead. Looking back at the forest one last time, he resumed his journey, following the path Aiko had shown him, inching closer to his ultimate goal.
