The officer's eyes locked onto Jake's. "We've reopened Rachel's case. New evidence suggests foul play."
Jake's mind raced. "What evidence?"
The officer hesitated. "A witness came forward. Someone who saw your father arguing with Rachel the night she died."
Samantha's grip on Jake's hand tightened. "Who is the witness?"
The officer's expression turned solemn. "Mia, your ex-fiancée, Jake. She's been cooperating with our investigation."
Jake's eyes widened. Mia, the one who accused him of being involved in Rachel's death...
The officer continued, "We need to ask you some questions, Jake. About your father, your relationship with Rachel, and your whereabouts the night she died."
Jake's heart pounded. Was he a suspect?
Samantha's voice firm. "We'll cooperate fully. But Jake's innocent."
The officer nodded. "We'll investigate all leads. Jake, please come with us."
As Jake stood, his world crumbled. Was he heading toward justice or a nightmare?
Jake's mind raced as he followed the officer, his heart heavy with uncertainty. Samantha's hand in his offered little comfort.
At the police station, Jake faced a barrage of questions. His alibi, his relationship with Rachel, his father's secrets...every aspect of his life was scrutinized.
Samantha's presence was a constant reminder of his innocence. Yet, doubts crept in. Had he unknowingly contributed to Rachel's death?
As the interrogation ended, Jake felt drained. The officer's parting words haunted him: "We'll be in touch, Jake. Soon."
The drive home was silent, Jake's thoughts consumed by the investigation.
Samantha broke the silence. "Jake, we'll face this together. You're innocent."
Jake's eyes met hers, searching for reassurance. "What if I'm not, Samantha? What if I'm responsible?"
Samantha's grip on his hand tightened. "You're not, Jake. We'll prove it."
But as they arrived home, a surprise awaited. Mia stood on the porch, her expression unreadable.
"Jake, we need to talk," Mia said, her voice low.
Jake's instincts screamed warning. What did Mia want now?
