Chapter 8 - Hank's Secret and Billie Reveals A Traumatic Event

As October of 2016 arrived, Hank had acclimated remarkably well after moving into Billie's residence, and the children had formed a close bond with him. Unbeknownst to Billie and Hank, Trudy, Alvin, Antonio, and Kevin were beginning to harbor suspicions regarding their relationship. One morning, while Billie was preparing breakfast, she glanced into the living room and smiled upon seeing Hank seated on the floor, engaging in play with the one-year-old twins, Lorne and Loki, and her three-year-old son, Owen. It was clear to Billie that her children were filling the profound void left in Hank's life by the loss of Justin. Hank frequently engaged in soccer games with Billie's sons—Henry, Joseph, Johnny, Cameron, and Sebastian—whose ages were thirteen, ten, nine, eight, and seven, respectively. Additionally, he spent time drawing with her daughters, Dream and Ana, who were eleven and six years old, respectively, and allowed them to teach him about various aspects of being female. The animals had also grown fond of Hank, as had Billie's parents and her brothers who still lived at home. Her brothers, Marcus, Tristan, Mikey, and Mitchell, along with family and friends residing in Hawaii, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Washington, D.C., had grown accustomed to hearing Billie speak of Hank and were looking forward to meeting him during Halloween. After completing breakfast, both Billie and Hank received a text message from Kevin, notifying them of a new case. Billie embraced her school-aged children as they left for their walk to school, kissed Owen, Lorne, and Loki on the cheek, and then she and Hank departed for the crime scene in their respective vehicles. They had mutually agreed to continue commuting to work separately to avoid arousing suspicion among their colleagues.

Upon arriving at the crime scene, Alvin, Antonio, and Kevin watched Billie and Hank closely. The moment Billie laid eyes upon the deceased woman, she instantly recognized her. "Oh, that's Mandy Parker," she remarked. "When I was with the state police, we responded to numerous domestic violence calls at her address. Her husband would frequently abuse her, yet she always insisted that she did not want him arrested and that everything was fine." Antonio inquired, "How many calls did you respond to?" Billie replied, "While I was with the state police, the count was 550. Her husband's name is Kyle, and it seems he discarded her body here in Chicago despite them living in Bunesberry, Illinois. This places the case under the jurisdiction of the state police since Intelligence does not have authority in Bunesberry. Although I am still on the state police payroll, it remains their case." As Billie turned around, she spotted Kyle Parker and exclaimed, "Well, I'll be damned, there he is." Kyle fled upon being recognized. Billie released Riker from the car, and together they pursued Kyle. Hank and the rest of the intelligence team followed suit in their vehicles. Kyle increased his speed when he noticed Riker closing in, jaws snapping. He eventually tripped, allowing Riker to grasp his leg with his jaws. Billie swiftly handcuffed Kyle and placed him in the back of Jay's police vehicle. She then contacted Chief Bearhart, who dispatched Officers Washoe and Lakota to retrieve Kyle Parker from Intelligence. As the team departed, Billie remained in Hank's office, preparing paperwork for Internal Affairs regarding her arrest of Kyle Parker, given Riker's involvement in subduing Kyle. Observing Billie, Hank was reminded of a secret he had been harboring. He recalled an incident from July 2016 when the intelligence unit was attempting to solve a case. A tip had led them to an abandoned warehouse, where they failed to locate the suspect. Riker had stayed home that day due to an injured paw. Later, Billie went for a walk to clear her head. The next thing she knew, she was in Hank's office with both Hank and the commander present. The commander stated, "Hank, Detective Vote is under the influence." He then asked Billie to recount her experience. In her impaired state, she explained, "When I went out the back of the warehouse to look around, the suspect cornered me. He covered my mouth and said, 'Eat these edibles, and I'll let your team live and you let me go. If you don't eat them, you won't have a team left.' So, I ate the edibles." The commander instructed Hank, "She must remain here until IAD can document her condition for a new charge against the suspect." After assuring IAD that he would ensure Billie's safe return home, Hank reentered his office to find Billie seated on his desk, naked from the waist down and engaging in self-pleasure. Hank quickly locked the door and inquired, "Billie, what are you doing?" She replied, still under the influence, "You know you like what you see." She then approached Hank, kissed him, and began to undo his belt. Despite his initial protest, "Billie, we can't do this," she persisted, "You know you've been wanting this, you know you want me." She proceeded to perform oral sex on Hank, who, despite knowing it was wrong, couldn't resist and figured she was too high to remember. Eventually, driven by passion, he bent her over his desk and engaged in intercourse, covering her mouth to muffle her moans, all he could think about was how good it felt to finally have sex with Billie, even though she might not remember. Succumbing to his desires, Hank led them further into the encounter, culminating in mutual oral pleasure. After they redressed, Hank hooked up Billie's car to his own and drove her home. He assisted her father in getting her inside before returning to his own home. Billie's voice interrupted Hank's thoughts. "I have to tell you something," he said. "Do you remember the day when a suspect got you high, and you had to stay here for IAD to collect evidence?" "Yes," Billie replied. "Well," Hank continued, "after everyone left and the nightshift officers arrived, I found you half-naked on my desk, pleasuring yourself. You came onto me, and we ended up having sex in my office. I couldn't bring myself to tell you." Billie responded, "I've been hiding a secret from you too. The high wore off just enough for me to fully comprehend what I was doing. I knew what was happening but could never bring myself to tell you." Hank smiled, and they along with Riker got into their vehicles and drove back to the house. With the remainder of the day before them, they looked forward to some much-needed relaxation.

Upon their return home, Billie, Hank, and Riker found Billie's family gathered outside, with the dogs frolicking in the front yard. Billie's brother, Cooper, was busy grilling steaks and had potatoes wrapped in foil cooking alongside. Henry, Dream, Joseph, Johnny, Cameron, Sebastian, and Ana informed Hank that their school catered exclusively to children with military connections, either past or present, resulting in a shorter school day that concluded at noon, with the remainder of their classes conducted online. After lunch, Billie assisted Henry, Dream, Joseph, Johnny, Cameron, Sebastian, and Ana with their online studies, while her parents, brothers, Owen, Lorne, Loki, and Hank enjoyed an episode of Courage The Cowardly Dog. Once the online assignments were completed, the group spent the afternoon engaged in games such as "What Am I" and "Pictionary." As 11:30 approached, Billie instructed her children to prepare for bed, having permitted them to stay up later due to it being Friday. Rufus and Cooper made their way to the barn to feed the animals their late-night meal, while Billie and Thomas tended to the indoor pets, and Hank ascended the stairs. While rummaging through the closet, Hank inadvertently knocked a small box to the floor, causing several photographs to scatter. Upon gathering them, he discovered images of Billie with a young man who appeared to be in his early twenties, alongside a toddler who stood before them in some pictures, with Billie also depicted holding a baby, her pregnancy evident. There were also ultrasound images included. When Billie entered the room, Hank remarked, "I was going through the closet and accidentally knocked these down." As Billie examined the photographs, Hank inquired, "Who are they?" After a moment of hesitation, Billie replied, "The man was my fiancé, Carter; he is Sebastian's biological father. The young boy was Carter's son, Carter Jr., and the baby in my arms is Sebastian. The ultrasound pictures are of our second child together, Abigail." Hank then asked, "What happened?" Billie spoke with a trembling voice, "Carter, Carter Jr., and Abigail were killed. A reckless college student ran a red light and collided with our vehicle. Sebastian was not with us that day. When I regained consciousness in the hospital, the doctor informed me that Carter had succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital. Carter Jr. suffered injuries that were too severe for a two-year-old and passed away on the operating table. The force of the crash claimed Abigail's life instantly. I was seven months pregnant at the time, and they had no choice but to perform an emergency cesarean section while I was unconscious, removing Abigail from my womb. The accident caused internal bleeding, necessitating further surgery. The young man escaped punishment because his father hired a highly expensive attorney who helped him evade accountability for his actions." Hank embraced Billie as she began to weep, placing the photographs back in the closet. They lay down together, with Billie resting her head on Hank's chest. He said, "I apologize for bringing that up; I should not have asked." Billie responded, "It's alright; I rarely discuss them because it is too painful, and I can never bring myself to display their pictures on the mantle in the living room." Hank assured her, "That reckless college student will face the consequences of his actions." They shared a kiss before succumbing to sleep.
