Chapter 19 - I stumbled upon a secret meeting in the garden!

Lily excitedly rushed back to the kitchen to do the task I assigned her. And so I was left with the other maids whom I was not used to.

There was quite an open space left between us as I walked in front of them and they walked behind me.

I tried dismissing them since this felt awkward, but they refused, saying that o couldn't wander around the garden alone.

So they followed me around the jazz like garden as I randomly plucked out leaves. It was a habit now.

" Why did you call the Duke out, detective?" I heard someone say. The sound came from the other side of the maze wall in the garden. If we continued walking, we would get to them because there was no way out of the maze except for this way, and it led to where Ryan and Tom were.

I stopped walking, and the servants followed suit.. It was Tom, meaning that Ryan was with him. What were they doing here? I thought they returned to the border.

" I-I am afraid I have bad news for you, Duke." The detective stammered.

" Speak." Ryan said, and I could his chilling tone from where I was standing, I involuntarily shivered.

The poor detective scared out of his wits by the tone of command " W-well, W-we have reached a dead end."

" Meaning?" Ryan asked. His tone of voice did not change. If words came out based on how they were spoken, I believe Ryan's tone would have led to his words to be ice blocks shaped like daggers.

" W-wel, your greatness, M-my firm couldn't find more information relating to the death of your wi-" the detective tried explaining but was intercepted by Tom.

" You called out the Duke for this? Mr Mill, it seemed you have forgotten your place. The Duke left some important business at the border for this nonsense. Now tell me, how would you like to be dealt with?" Tom spoke with a menacing tone.

Thud!

I presumed the detective knelt to the ground.

" P-please do not kill me. I-I have a wife and two children. Please spare my life, I will receive any punishment just don't kill me please, I beg you." the detective said in his frail voice. My breath hitched at this relevation. Was Ryan capable of murder? Oh, I felt silly when this question popped up in my mind because I had died at Ryan's hand in my previous life.

But what was interesting was that, Ryan was still investigating his late wife's accident. I thought that the Rvans family had wrapped it up and hid the results from the public, but it seemed like that was not the case.

What puzzled me even more was why would Ryan, a dignified Duke, met up with someone in a scary maze garden, whereas he could have just met them in the meeting hall.

Did this mean that Ryan was hiding the fact that he was investigating? But from who? It possible couldn't be me or Jay Jay that only left one person, Master Evans. But why?

" Get your face out of the Duke's sight." Tom spat in an intimidating voice.

" Remember, if you so much as mention this to anyone, not only will I hunt you down, I'll go after your family." Ryan added coldly

" T-thank you, your greatness, I p-promise, my lips are sealed. Y-you won't hear a word." After we heard these words, we heard footsteps rushing in the direction of the exit of this maze garden.

I was lost in my thoughts that I forgot that I had people with me. I don't know it it was out of fear or what, but one of the servants stepped on a twig and alerted Ryan and Tom that we were listening in. Not that we wanted to be but I couldn't have possibly boldly walked towards the exit while they were having such a conversation, so that was why I wanted to wait for them to wrap up their secret meeting and I could leave after them.

Now, it seemed like we were spying.

" Come out." Tom shouted.

My breath hitched because just like infidelity spying was not taken lightly in this kingdom. It was a great offense, particularly if you were caught spying against a royal or a man with a great title like the Duke of this kingdom, Ryan.

I turned around and saw how panicked the servants were, and then I looked in the direction of where those two were and started walking.
