Chapter 34 - old rivals

The door closed with a soft click, and the moment the last student was out of earshot, Principal Orellos and Vice Principal Ephemera dropped their polite façades like a pair of serpents shedding their skin. The air between them seemed to vibrate with a tension that had been building for years, fed by countless disagreements, territorial battles, and deep-seated rivalries. It was a brittle, fragile thing, ready to snap.

Ephemera turned on Orellos, her nostrils flaring, and her teeth bared in a snarl. Her crest trembled slightly, a telltale sign of her barely contained fury. "You're letting him off easy!" she spat, her voice sharp enough to cut through the air. She threw her arms up, fingers splayed wide as if she were casting the accusation straight into his face. "A human—a human, Orellos! He shouldn't even be here in the first place, and now you're giving him a free pass to stir up trouble?"

Orellos leaned back against his desk, folding his arms slowly across his broad chest. His face remained calm, almost serene, but his eyes held a steely glint. He was an older, broad-chested crocodilian with a leathery face and a practiced smile that masked more than it revealed. He watched her with a sort of detached amusement, one side of his mouth curling into a faint, condescending smirk.

"You always did have a flair for the dramatic, Ephemera," he replied coolly, each word measured like he was counting them in his head before releasing them. "I'm not letting him off. I'm keeping order, something you seem determined to disrupt every time I try."

Ephemera's crest flared up, the vibrant scales rippling with shades of red. She took a step closer, her claws clicking on the wooden floor with a sharp, staccato rhythm. Her eyes narrowed into slits, glaring daggers at him.

"Keeping order?" she scoffed, her voice thick with contempt. "By siding with that human? You think that's going to keep things calm? He's a disruptor, an outsider! We don't need him here—he's already caused enough problems!"

Orellos sighed, his patience thinning. "The only one causing problems, Ephemera, is you. The human hasn't broken any rules. It's your precious little pack of raptors that can't seem to control themselves around him. Maybe you should be focusing on disciplining them instead of playing into this petty vendetta of yours."

Ephemera's face contorted in rage, her teeth grinding audibly. "A petty vendetta? Against a human?" She took another step forward, her tail swishing angrily behind her, the armored ball at its end thudding against the floor with a muted thump. "This isn't about me! This is about you constantly undermining my authority, protecting him just because you think it will—"

Orellos held up a hand to cut her off, his voice dropping an octave, becoming more forceful. "Enough. I don't care about your theories, Ephemera. I'm done listening to your paranoia. The human stays. And I will continue to protect every student here, no matter what species they are."

Ephemera's eyes blazed. She leaned in closer, close enough that he could feel the heat of her breath on his face. "Your little act doesn't fool anyone, Orellos. You're just trying to play politics—"

"And you're just trying to keep your position safe by stirring up your own side," he shot back, cutting her off again. "We both know what this is really about."

For a moment, they were nose to nose, glaring at each other with a hatred that had simmered for years, both refusing to back down. Orellos' cold, calculating stare met Ephemera's fiery, righteous anger. They stood like that, two predators locked in a silent battle of wills.

Orellos finally broke the silence, his voice dripping with contempt. "I'm tired of this, Ephemera. I'm going to lunch. If you want to keep shouting, do it somewhere else."

Ephemera's mouth opened, then closed again, her crest still bristling. "Fine. Go ahead. Run away, like you always do."

Without another word, Orellos turned on his heel and strode out of the office, his heavy tail swinging behind him. Ephemera stood there for a moment, seething, her chest heaving with fury. Then she spun around and stormed out the opposite door, her footsteps echoing down the corridor.

As Orellos walked away, the faint hum of conversation from the cafeteria drifted through the hall. He knew that, even now, his every step was being watched, every movement analyzed by those who thrived on the school's internal politics. His tail dragged behind him, a constant reminder of the weight he carried—not just as the principal, but as the figurehead of a divided school.

He could feel the stares of the teachers and staff as he entered the cafeteria. The room quieted slightly, a murmur passing through the tables like a wave. Orellos maintained his composed expression, his eyes scanning the room with a practiced ease that belied his inner turmoil.

His gaze lingered for a moment on a group of students huddled near the far corner. Raptors, their eyes sharp and curious, glanced up at him before quickly looking away. They were Ephemera's protégés, and he could see the seeds of dissent she had sown already beginning to take root.

He moved to the staff table, where a few of his more loyal teachers sat, exchanging uneasy glances. He nodded to them, picking up a tray of food with deliberate slowness, ensuring that his actions conveyed calm and control. Yet, as he sat down, he could feel the tension radiating through the room like a palpable force.

Meanwhile, Ephemera had made her way down the opposite corridor, her claws clicking furiously against the tiled floor. Her tail swished behind her, a controlled arc of restrained fury. She passed a few students who watched her with wide eyes; even they could sense the intensity that radiated off her like heat from a blazing fire.

She rounded a corner and stopped abruptly, taking a deep breath to steady herself. She knew she had to be careful now. She couldn't afford to let Orellos continue undermining her authority, not if she wanted to maintain her influence. The human was just the beginning, a catalyst for the larger conflict that was brewing.

Ephemera's eyes narrowed as she saw a group of her own students, her raptors, whispering among themselves. She approached them with purpose, her presence commanding their attention instantly. "What are you standing around for?" she demanded, her voice low but firm. "You think this is some game?"

One of the raptors, a tall, lean female with bright orange scales, looked up, her expression a mixture of defiance and uncertainty. "No, Vice Principal Ephemera," she replied, though her tone was more questioning than respectful. "We just… we just wanted to know if what they're saying is true."

Ephemera's crest flared slightly, but she kept her voice steady. "And what exactly are they saying, Raeka?" she asked, narrowing her eyes at the student.

Raeka shifted her weight nervously, glancing at her companions before responding. "That the human—he's going to be here permanently. That Principal Orellos has decided to keep him, no matter what. And… that we're not supposed to do anything about it."

Ephemera's jaw tightened, and for a moment, a flicker of doubt crossed her features. But she quickly masked it with a stern expression. "Listen to me carefully," she said, her voice cold and commanding. "Orellos may think he can protect that human, but he doesn't understand the forces at play here. He doesn't understand what's at stake. But we do, don't we?"

The raptors nodded, their expressions hardening in agreement. Ephemera felt a small surge of satisfaction. Good. They were still on her side—for now.

"Remember this," she continued, her tone growing more intense. "This isn't just about some outsider disrupting our school. It's about protecting what's ours, maintaining the balance we've fought so hard to preserve. Do you understand?"

Raeka nodded again, more firmly this time. "Yes, Vice Principal Ephemera. We understand."

"Good," Ephemera said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Because if Orellos wants to play games with us, he's going to find out exactly what happens when you underestimate your enemies."

She turned sharply on her heel and began to walk away, but she could feel the eyes of her students on her back, their loyalty hanging in the balance, their faith teetering between belief and doubt.

As she neared the cafeteria, Ephemera's steps slowed. She knew she would have to face Orellos again, soon enough. And this time, she would be ready. She'd be ready to confront him publicly if necessary, to expose his weakness, to turn the tide in her favor.

She paused just outside the cafeteria doors, taking one last deep breath to calm her nerves. Inside, she could hear the low hum of conversation, the clatter of trays, the soft murmur of dissent and uncertainty growing among the staff and students alike.

she scowled but forced herself forward, she pushed the door open and stepped inside.
