Chapter 30 - Chapter 30 By a hair's breadth.

-Ladies ,I will need your help this time as my own mana is not enough to prepare everything.

Paul said the moment they were back.

Both girls understood that he was going to cast magic and it would be something big since he wanted their help.

-Of course master we would be happy to provide you with our mana.

Paul nodded and started drawing a magic circle on the earth that he dug up.

-Transfer your mana to me.

He said once he was finished.

Both girls obeyed and put their hands on his shoulders, transferring their mana into his body, while Paul used the mana to fill the circle with power and it started to glow with a golden light as it was filled.

-You can stop now.

He said when the girls sent around half their mana into him they stopped the transfer and they saw that the magic circle was now fully glowing indicating that it had enough power to serve its purpose.

-Master, what is this drawing?

Mia asked.

It's a magic circle that can be used to cast a spell and the caster can set up the time that spell will activate at.

Paul explained.

-What kind of spell did you cast master?

Maya was curious about the new magic ability that their master displayed.

-This spell will move the earth back into the hole once the fire will burn the bodies to make sure that they are not discovered by the Dead Breeder.

Paul explained.

Also it doesn't require as much mana, but we are getting out of here the moment the bodies will start burning so I needed your help with the spell, otherwise I would be too tired to move for a while and i need the mana to start the fire as It will take a few fireballs to make sure that all the corpses will get burnt at the same time.

This made the girls understand why they shared their mana with him and also that their master did not intend to wait for the fire to finish burning before they left.

Paul checked the wind strength and direction as this was important and luckily the wind was blowing from the direction of the river and away from the spider monster.

Since the conditions were good he decided to proceed with the burial.

He didn't say any great speech or anything like that.

-May you all rest in peace.

Was all that he said before using the fireballs to ignite the pyre.

As the wood was dry, it burnt fast and soon the whole pyre was ablaze with flames devouring the bodies.

Now the problem was the black smoke that was emitted and the smell of burning flesh but this wasn't too concerning as the wind blew into a direction away from the Dead breeder.

-Lets go,this place is not safe anymore.

Paul said to the girls right after he placed the boulder with the names of the dead inscribed on it as their tombstone.

He looked for the last time to the pyre just to make sure that all the bodies were engulfed in flames.

Paul had planned the place that he would go first from the beginning as there was a small town around fifty kilometers down the stream and this was always his first destination once he could move properly.

Now he had to expedite his plans as there was too great a risk in staying in his camp for any longer especially since it looked like the oversized spider was looking for them now.

He led the girls to the river and they started walking down stream along its bank.

If he was fully healed then they could reach the town within a few hours but as he was still using crutches, their pace was quite slow.

Around an half an hour after they set off they heard a screeching roar from the direction of their previous camp site.

Paul went pale at this sound as it could only mean one thing.

The Dead breeder had found the burning corpses and it was furious as this meant that its eggs were destroyed.

He quickly licked his finger to check the direction of the wind and he was terrified as the wind had changed its direction and was now gently blowing from their direction straight to their old camp site.

This meant that the monster could sniff them out and it would most likely chase them down soon.

Paul was ready for this possibility but he never thought that he would have to use this plan as if the wind havent changed the direction they would be far away by the time the monster discovered the burial pit.

-Girls strip down to your underwear.

He ordered them with a tone of voice that indicated there was no time to argue or ask questions.

His commanding tone and the seriousness on his face mixed with a bit of panic made them obey his command without delay.

They all stripped to their underwear and Paul soon took out something that looked like three miniature rafts connected by a rope.

Each section consisted of three logs that were around a meter long and around fifteen centimeters wide.

-You need to lay down on the logs and use your hands to paddle.

Paul explained how to use these things as their primary functions were to keep them all together and to help them swim across the river that in this place was around half a kilometer wide.

Right as he finished speaking they heard very quick and heavy steps coming their way.

From the sound alone they knew that whatever was coming was big and had more than four legs.

This meant that they were discovered and had to run as fast as they could.

All three of them jumped on their swimming boards substitutes and started to swim for their lives.

The mini rafts managed to keep them above the water and even if they slowed them down a bit they helped them stay together as the current was stronger than they had thought seeing that the water was moving slowly.

When they were around fifty meters away from the shore they heard another screeching roar, this time it was way closer and the moment they turned around to look at its source they all went pale.

A massive spider that was as big as a minibus was screeching at them from the shore that they departed from just a minute or so earlier.

-we managed to escape by a hair's breadth

Paul said aloud and the girls agreed.

If they were any slower then they would have all died but thanks to them having a warning as the previous screech was enough to make them run into the water, they managed to escape.

The spider was standing on the river bank and pacing back and forward as it wasn't able to find a way to kill the ones that burnt its eggs and in the burial pit the flames were too strong for it to even try to save its unborn young.

Now it was fuming with anger but all it could do was to hiss and screech on the trio as they swam away.
