Chapter 9 - The weight of expectations

On the way to the Viscount's office with his heart beating out of control and a grin up to the corner of his cheeks.

"Sir Cedric who should I assign to young master Elaric?" asks the head maid but Cedric doesn't hear a word.

*knock knock

Doing paperwork, "Come in, What is it this time Cedric? It is as if I never assigned you to Elarc."

Raising his head he is shocked to see Cedric smiling uncontrollably.

"Sir, The boy mastered it."

"Good, very good. The boy is already as good as I was when I was 9. He will be worth the investment."

His smile widened, "No sir, I meant that he mastered mana with his weapon as well."

In utter disbelief, "What?! Are you serious? Did you check? Where is he right now?!"

"I was too shocked for that to come to mind but the boy has no reason to lie. If you want to check he is probably at your training grounds."

Drytan heads out of his office walking frantically, remembering the moment his wife had died in front of his eyes. Screaming at the top of his lungs and tears running down his chin he faints.

How since he opened his eyes under his ceiling hoping it was all but a dream and when he looked over to his side Seraphine wasn't there.

Only then did he notice his body was covered in bandages. Ever since that moment, he swore to spend every breath of his to slay demons and their contractors.

*****

Hearing the door burst through Elaric looks over.

"Boy Show me your mana enhancement, right now!"

Baffled by Drytan's sudden change in tone, "All right sir."

Nervous from the Viscount's gaze Elaric looks over to Cedric. After seeing a soft smile directed at him Elaric pushes forward.

Focusing on his energy he thins it down and passes it to his heart and then through his veins to his hands.

His palms illuminates as it engulfs the spear. Proceeding to do so to his joints he jabs his spear with such intensity that he could not even see it.

Drytan feels an overwhelming excitement as if everything is aligning perfectly, too perfectly. "Have the gods finally decided to intervene? I thought they had given up on this world for whatever reason."

"Cedric, This child has been sent by gods."

Remembering the betrayal Drytan who he has been serving his whole life faced with eyes full of pity, "Sir? Do you think the gods have not given up on us just because of Elaric's talent? It is about time that you give up on God sir."

"I had gotten over that long ago Cedric. My assumption no belief is based on the fact that similar to how a building is the weakest when it's being built now is probably the weakest state of the demons."

"Now, Do you still think such a talented child being born at this time is mere coincidence?"

Helpless from Drytan's logical interpretation Cedric agrees.

"Contact his parents and tell them if they partake in a lie Elaric will bathe in riches which otherwise would never see."

"What might that lie be sir?"

"Spread a lie that he is my illegitimate who was born when I who was heartbroken by Seraphine's death seeked comfort through his mother's body."

Hearing such vile words from Drytan who was known as a wife doter among the nobility and looked down upon due to his view of commoners as equals and pursuers of honor. Cedric feels as if someone pulled his heart out of his chest.

"Is using such vile measures necessary sir?"

"All right, Do you have any other way to hide why exactly I brought this child under me?"

"Isn't bringing him here due to his talent enough?"

"Then what about why he trains in my training grounds and we can't let him go outside without you so do you think people especially demons would believe that I assigned you to the child only because of his talent?"

"Seeing the current state of things he might be our only shot at annihilating demons and even 1% risk is not acceptable. This is the only way so if you don't have any other ideas shut up and do what I said, Understood?"

Cedric agrees reluctantly.

"Since parents are always angels in the eyes of children they might not agree just for Elaric's sake so take 100 gold coins that ought to convince them."

Degradation of the eyes that once only saw the goodness in people, "Understood sir..." with a heavy heart.

"Go there now. As I said we must remove every single risk. I will teach the child until you arrive."

Cedric leaves for the Weaver's house.

Drytan looks over as Cedric leaves the room, "He is still too kind. I would have preferred to kill the boy's family and fabricate evidence against demons so he would be fueled by revenge and it works much better as fuel than love alone." as if he is speaking about himself.

"But if I were to do that I wouldn't do it without Cedric knowing and then he would leave my side. He is still far too useful for me to throw him away."

Turning his head to the nervous Elaric seeing Cedric leave the room, "Shine brighter child so I can cut down the liabilities sooner."

"I will not eat you calm down. He will return in a few hours. Until then I will train you."

Elaric nods.

"Since you have already mastered mana enhancement you will easily master all the other forms. However, Do not let this get over your head. All you have is a few years of a headstart, while it may sound like a lot you have to train to stay ahead. There have been many cases of people who have left behind those with talent so do not grow lenient."

Elaric nods again.

Drytan picks up a spear, "All right now I will teach you forms for a closer range. While a spear is most valuable for fighting in midrange you can't always have the ideal position in combat. I will demonstrate two techniques to you one for maintaining the gap and another for multiple opponents."

He proceeds to show Elaric how to use the full body of a spear.

"Now try it yourself, But this time focus energy on your wrists otherwise they will break from pressure in close range due to all the swinging."

"Yes sir!"

Elaric does as Drytan says and on his first try. Swoosh.

He feels a sharp pain in his right wrist.

"Thicken it further on your wrist and thin it down on your left leg when swinging on the right side and vice versa also you shouldn't use it on your weapon when you are still learning a form."

"Yes sir."

"This guy is more grumpy than Cedric but still gives great advice. So this is why he wanted me to learn human anatomy. This world is a lot more similar to mine than I thought. I assumed it would be full of flying wizards who shot fire bolts from the sky but it's the opposite."

"Since the magic here is dependent on muscle and joints my days in the military might end up being worthwhile."

Elaric coming to terms with the system of Gehenna thinks of enhancing his muscles with mana that he otherwise was focusing on the spear.

SWOOSH!
