Chereads / Timeless Kyle / Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Monster

Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Monster

The lab dissolved into a swirling vortex of temporal energy as Kyle and his doppelganger clashed. Reality itself seemed to warp and bend around them, the very fabric of spacetime straining under the weight of their conflict. Each blow exchanged sent shockwaves rippling through the timestream, fragments of past and future colliding in a kaleidoscope of possibilities.

Kyle's mind raced, trying to comprehend the enormity of what he faced. This other version of himself – this Temporal Kyle – was more than just an enemy. He was a dark mirror, a reflection of what Kyle could become if he lost his way.

"Why?" Kyle shouted as he parried a devastating strike from his counterpart. "Why are you doing this?"

Temporal Kyle's eyes flashed with a mixture of pain and determination. "You don't understand. You can't understand. Not yet."

Their battle carried them through fractures in reality, glimpses of other timelines flashing by in disorienting bursts. Kyle saw versions of himself, of his friends, living lives both wonderful and terrible. In one, he and Zara were married, living in a world untouched by temporal war. In another, he stood among the ruins of civilization, the last survivor of a reality torn apart by the Entics.

Each vision cut deep, a reminder of what was at stake. But none prepared him for what came next.

As they crashed through another temporal rift, Kyle found himself in a familiar setting – his childhood home. But something was wrong. The air was thick with acrid smoke, and an oppressive silence hung over everything.

"No," Temporal Kyle whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "Not here. Not again."

Before Kyle could question his doppelganger's reaction, he saw it. A figure lying motionless on the floor, partially obscured by fallen debris. With a sense of mounting dread, Kyle approached, already knowing what he would find but unable to stop himself.

It was his mother.

Kyle fell to his knees, a wordless cry of anguish tearing from his throat. Even though he knew this wasn't his timeline, the sight of her lifeless body broke something inside him. Memories flooded back – her warm smile, her gentle touch, the way she always believed in him even when he doubted himself.

"I'm sorry," Temporal Kyle said, his earlier aggression replaced by a deep, aching sorrow. "I never wanted you to see this. To feel this pain."

Kyle looked up at his counterpart, tears streaming down his face. "What happened? How...?"

"The Entics," Temporal Kyle replied, his voice hollow. "In my timeline, they attacked earlier. Before we were ready. Mom... she didn't make it out."

The revelation hit Kyle like a physical blow. He had always known, intellectually, that their war against the Entics had casualties. But this... this made it real in a way nothing else had.

As the two Kyles stood there, united in their grief, the world around them began to shift and change. The temporal energies that had been swirling chaotically started to coalesce, forming images and scenes from across time and space.

Kyle saw his father, working tirelessly in his lab, the weight of foreknowledge heavy on his shoulders. He saw Zara, Axel, Lena, and Finn – not just as they were in his timeline, but in countless others. Sometimes they were heroes, sometimes victims, and sometimes... sometimes they were the very monsters they fought against.

"Do you see now?" Temporal Kyle asked, his voice thick with emotion. "This is what we're fighting for. What we're fighting against. Every choice, every action, ripples across the multiverse."

Kyle stood, his grief transforming into a burning determination. "Then we fix it. All of it. There has to be a way."

For a moment, hope flickered in Temporal Kyle's eyes. But then his expression hardened. "There is. But the cost... it's too high."

Before Kyle could respond, another tremor shook the fabric of reality. The peaceful scene of their childhood home shattered, replaced by a nightmarish landscape. The sky burned with an unnatural fire, and the ground beneath their feet writhed as if alive.

Standing before them, their forms shimmering with temporal energy, were the Entics. But these weren't the foot soldiers they had faced before. These were the leaders, the architects of the temporal war that had ravaged countless realities.

"At last," one of the Entics said, its voice a discordant chorus that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. "The Anomaly reveals itself."

Kyle felt a chill run down his spine. He glanced at his counterpart, seeing his own confusion mirrored there. "What are they talking about?"

But Temporal Kyle's face had gone pale. "No," he whispered. "It can't be. Not yet."

The lead Entic's form rippled, reshaping itself into a grotesque parody of human form. "Did you think you could hide from us, Anomaly? Did you think your petty manipulations of the timestream would go unnoticed?"

With a sinking feeling, Kyle realized the Entic wasn't addressing either of them. It was looking past them, at something – or someone – else.

Slowly, dreading what he might see, Kyle turned.

Standing there, his form flickering between solidity and transparency, was his father. Dr. Kyle Devuel Sr. looked exactly as Kyle remembered him, but there was an otherworldly quality to him now, as if he wasn't quite part of reality.

"Dad?" Kyle's voice cracked with emotion. "What... what's going on?"

Dr. Devuel's eyes were filled with a mixture of love and sorrow as he looked at his son – at both versions of his son. "I'm sorry," he said softly. "I never wanted this burden for you. Either of you."

The lead Entic let out a sound that might have been laughter, if laughter could curdle reality itself. "How touching. The Anomaly and its progeny, reunited at last. But it changes nothing. Your interference ends now."

As the Entics advanced, temporal energy crackling around them, Dr. Devuel turned to Kyle and his counterpart. "Listen to me. There isn't much time. The device I left you, Kyle – it's more than just a tool. It's a key."

"A key to what?" Temporal Kyle demanded, his earlier hostility forgotten in the face of this new threat.

"To everything," Dr. Devuel replied. "To the heart of the timestream itself. It's the only way to end this war once and for all."

The Entics were almost upon them now, reality warping and tearing around their monstrous forms. Kyle could feel the pull of multiple timelines, each one vying for dominance.

"But how?" Kyle shouted over the rising temporal storm. "How do we use it?"

Dr. Devuel's form was fading, the effort of maintaining his presence clearly taking its toll. "Together," he said, his voice growing fainter. "You must work together. Two sides of the same coin, past and future united. Only then can you access the full power of the key."

With a final, loving look at his sons, Dr. Devuel vanished, leaving Kyle and his temporal counterpart to face the advancing Entic horde.

For a moment, the two Kyles stood frozen, the weight of their father's revelation settling over them. Then, as one, they turned to face the Entics.

"Truce?" Kyle asked, extending his hand to his doppelganger.

Temporal Kyle hesitated for a fraction of a second before clasping Kyle's hand. "Truce. But when this is over, we need to talk."

As the Entics closed in, reality itself seeming to warp and twist around their otherworldly forms, Kyle and his counterpart stood back to back. The device Dr. Devuel had left – the key – pulsed with power between them.

"Any idea how this thing actually works?" Kyle asked, deflecting a blast of temporal energy with a hastily erected shield.

Temporal Kyle grunted as he fended off an Entic that had gotten too close. "Not a clue. But I guess we'll find out soon enough."

The battle that followed was unlike anything Kyle had ever experienced. Fighting alongside his temporal double, he felt as if he could anticipate every move, every strategy. They moved in perfect synchronization, covering each other's weaknesses and amplifying each other's strengths.

But the Entics were relentless. For every one they struck down, two more seemed to take its place. Reality itself was beginning to fray at the edges, the boundaries between timelines growing thin and permeable.

"We can't keep this up forever," Temporal Kyle shouted over the din of battle. "We need to do something drastic."

Kyle nodded, a desperate plan forming in his mind. "The key. Dad said we need to use it together. Maybe if we channel our temporal energy through it at the same time..."

Understanding dawned in Temporal Kyle's eyes. "It could work. But the power surge... it might tear us apart."

"You got a better idea?" Kyle asked, a grim smile on his face.

His counterpart matched his expression. "Nope. Let's do it."

As the Entics pressed in from all sides, Kyle and Temporal Kyle stood back to back once more. They each placed a hand on the device, feeling the thrum of temporal energy coursing through it.

"On three," Kyle said. "One..."

"Two..." Temporal Kyle continued.

"Three!" they shouted in unison.

Power unlike anything Kyle had ever felt surged through him. He could sense every timeline, every possibility, stretching out before him like strands in a vast cosmic web. And at the center of it all, a nexus of pure temporal energy.

The Entics recoiled, their forms wavering as the power of the key washed over them. "No!" the lead Entic howled, its voice distorting. "You don't know what you're doing! You'll destroy everything!"

But Kyle and his counterpart were beyond stopping now. As one, they pushed deeper into the heart of the timestream, guided by an instinct they didn't fully understand.

Reality itself seemed to hold its breath as they approached the temporal nexus. Kyle could feel himself starting to come apart at the seams, his very essence threatening to dissipate across a million timelines.

"Hold on!" he heard Temporal Kyle shout, though whether it was with his ears or his mind, he couldn't tell anymore. "We're almost there!"

With a final, monumental effort, they reached out and touched the heart of time itself.

The world exploded into light and sound and sensation beyond anything Kyle could comprehend. He felt as if he was everywhere and everywhen at once, experiencing every possible version of himself across an infinity of timelines.

And then, just as suddenly, it was over.

Kyle found himself lying on the floor of his father's lab, gasping for breath. The device – the key – lay smoking and inert beside him. And there, a few feet away, was his temporal counterpart, looking just as shell-shocked as Kyle felt.

As they slowly sat up, taking stock of their surroundings, Kyle realized something had changed. The air felt... clearer somehow, as if a great weight had been lifted from reality itself.

"Did we... did we do it?" he asked, his voice hoarse.

Temporal Kyle nodded slowly, a look of wonder on his face. "I think we did. The Entics... I can't sense them anymore. It's like they never existed."

As the implications of what they had done began to sink in, Kyle felt a mixture of elation and trepidation. They had saved reality – all realities – from the Entic threat. But at what cost?

Before he could voice his concerns, the lab door burst open. Zara, Axel, Lena, and Finn rushed in, their faces a mixture of concern and confusion.

"Kyle!" Zara exclaimed, rushing to his side. Then she saw Temporal Kyle and stopped short. "What... what happened? We felt something, like a shockwave through time itself."

Kyle looked at his counterpart, seeing his own uncertainty reflected there. How could they possibly explain what had transpired? How could they convey the magnitude of what they had experienced?
