Chapter 6 - Chapter 6

The next day the rain had stopped, it was still cloudy out, and not being the type of person to give up, Mary wanted the library to make a good impression on me, so back we went as soon as the bell rang. We took our packed lunches and lazily made our way to the library. Once there we took a seat at one of the four tables we were permitted to use. Mary loved libraries, she loved the smell of books and would gush when I pulled a different book from my bag every other day. I was an active bookworm. I would, of course, lend my books to her too and she would do the same for me, we would share what we found interesting and our favorite characters. We didn't need to have conversations every day as we were very comfortable just sitting and reading in each other's presence. So after we had eaten something we went to the one shelf containing the fiction books and each chose a random book. We were currently between books at this point. We sat back in our chairs and buried our noses as far as we could into our chosen materials.

It wasn't too long after we started reading that this strange boy entered the library, the one that was staring at us the previous day. I hadn't noticed him walk in, I was buried too deep in my book. I remember the shock and annoyance I felt when I suddenly heard a squicky voice next to me ask, "What are you reading?" I practically jumped out of my seat. Gone was the adventure I had immersed myself in, that wonderous world of escape, love, and fearlessness. I was being pulled back into that world we call reality I wasn't ready to go, not yet. I wanted to know what would happen to the characters next. With what I hoped was my best death stare, I looked up to see this same boy looking down at me with a sheepish smile. I did my best to sound sarcastic and said: "A book". Not fazed at all he laughed and asked what the book was about. I hoped that the annoyance on my face was apparent and that with my next sentence, he would leave me in peace. I told him that I couldn't answer that because I was still trying to read it. Instead of the intended effect he actually sat down across from me. Oh, what fresh hell was this?
