Chapter 5 - Chapter 5

Now back to our story, that is where I met him..... We met in the school library. I use the term library loosely. This is not the sort of high school, or college library you are used to or have seen in the movies. This library only had one wall stacked with books. There was one shelf that had all of the educational books they had, one shelf contained all of their fiction books, and the last shelf against the wall was filled with religious books. There were four large tables to sit at if you needed to research anything from these books. We had no computers or internet access at our disposal. Half of the library space was converted into a teacher's classroom so the shelves divided off that space. Still, it beats sitting outside on the cold concrete stairs during lunch. We would fry outside in the summer, freeze in the winter and when it rained we would get soaked if we couldn't find a place to sit under one of the zinc roofs.

We ended up in the library one Tuesday afternoon when the rain was coming down so hard we feared that we would be carried away by a current being formed by all the water. Mary, my best friend at the time had suggested that we sit in the library as all of the spots to sit or stand where we could find shelter were occupied. As I had never been in the library I agreed, I was more fish than human at this point and loved books. I knew however touching a book in my current condition would be a no-no as I needed a towel first. Mary is of medium height, slender, and has blue eyes and platinum hair. We were glued at the hip for most of our high school experience. She loves books, clothes and shopping. I have a similar love for books so we just clicked. Once we entered the library I could feel my clothes velcroed to my skin. All the girl's hair had to be pulled back into a pony or fastened and mine was sticking to my face on all corners. I think that if we had been allowed to wear makeup mine would have been so smeared that it would have made me look like a raccoon. Wouldn't that be a sight? We weren't the only ones with the same idea. Once we entered the library, we could barely move. We stood close to the door and waited for the storm to pass. As we were minding our own business and shivering due to the fact that we were soaked I could feel someone looking in our general direction. He was a short boy with brown eyes, and brown hair, and really kind of skinny. He wore thick blue-rimmed glasses that seemed to fit his face but his school clothes were definitely a bit too big. He stared at us and it made me feel a bit uncomfortable. I tried not to make eye contact and looked around as much as I could. Taking in the limited resources and the maximum amount of students. I looked over a few times to see if he had stopped looking and each time, there he was just staring, looking intently at us. He looked as though he was staring right through us. I figured that he had zoned out and wasn't even looking at us at all. When the bell rang I was glad to be out of there and back into the cold class where I could do my shivering in peace.
