Chapter 13 - Those good old days

A soft, gentle breeze whistled through the air, carrying with it a dozen dried woodland leaves as it swept through the forest. The trees, elegantly adorned with a blanket of pure white snow, stood silently as the gentle flakes continued to fall from above.

The entire forest—trees, shrubs, and ground—was covered in a shimmering coat of snow, signaling the arrival of the long-awaited winter.

With winter's arrival came the departure of most forest critters, retreating into hibernation for the cold season. However, the quiet left by these animals was soon replaced by the lively yelps and joyous screams of the children of Maddenport.

They dashed through the snow-covered streets, engaging in playful snowball fights, while their parents nearby indulged in animated conversations.

Deep within the forest, away from the bustling town, stood the Lawler residence. It was a typical Maddenport house, a high-built duplex with a wide ash garage panel and a picturesque chimney that sent plumes of black smoke into the air, signaling the warmth of life within.

Outside the residence, playing on the snow-layered forest grounds, were Eddy Lawler and his sister, Maggie. At this time, they were still children, recalling a scene from three years past. Eddy, then fourteen, and Maggie, twelve, wore innocent, charming smiles as they tossed snowballs at each other, dodging and laughing with pure delight.

It was a truly beautiful scene—two children, pure of heart, finding joy and contentment in their place in the world. It was a simple happiness that many long for.

Their cheerful play, however, was abruptly interrupted by a familiar sound: the slow approach of a car engine, already near their house. Turning towards the garage, they spotted the charming green-tinted sedan that belonged to none other than their beloved father, Mr. Lawler. Their smiles brightened once more as they raced towards the vehicle, which had just pulled into the driveway.

Maggie, with a burst of speed, reached the driver's door just a bit ahead of Eddy, who arrived moments later, catching his breath with a few hard gasps.

Finally, the sedan's engine shut off, and Mr. Lawler stepped out from the driver's seat, radiating his ever-pure smile.

Mr. Lawler was not just any average Maddenport parent in appearance. He was a handsome, tall man, standing at about 6'5", with striking coal-black hair that flowed from his scalp to his shoulders. He was dressed in a casual t-shirt, a coat, and a pair of jeans. His perfectly black eyes matched his hair, and his slightly muscular, slim build and chiseled face showcased the beauty inherent in the Lawler bloodline. Notably, Maggie had inherited his striking looks, while Eddy, though sharing his father's beautiful black hair, bore a closer resemblance to their mother in facial features.

Spreading open his arms, Mr. Lawler happily lifted Maggie off the ground, joyfully embracing his lovely daughter.

"Someone seems pretty happy. Are you having fun without Daddy again?" he teased.

With a soft blush, Maggie turned her glance away playfully.

"No... I wouldn't."

"Ooh? Is that so? Eddy?" Mr. Lawler inquired, shifting his gaze to his son.

"Mm... just a little fun." Eddy admitted with a grin.

"Eddy!" Maggie exclaimed, turning with a playful glare towards her brother.

Widening his ever-so-pretty smile, Mr. Lawler gently set Maggie back on her feet.

"Uh-oh. You know what that means, Mag-pie."

"No... no... no!" Maggie yelled with a delighted smile as Mr. Lawler began his world-famous belly tickle, sending her to the snow-covered ground in fits of laughter.

Eddy, standing a distance away, giggled lightly as he watched the scene unfold. However, Mr. Lawler noticed him and wasted no time dragging him into the fun as well.

So, there they both lay on the snowy ground, receiving their father's playful tickles, laughing aloud as they called for a halt.

"Stop... stop... Dad, I'm too old for this!" Eddy ranted in between laughter, though it did little to stop Mr. Lawler.

The tickles came to an abrupt halt as the front door gently swung open, and out stepped the charming Mrs. Lawler.

She was a slim, average-height woman, at least in her mid-thirties, with beautiful dark hair that complemented her sophisticated figure. She was truly a ten out of ten compared to most women, perfectly fitting in her silky white gown with a scarf tied elegantly around her neck.

"Welcome back, honey. I hate to interrupt whatever is going on here, but could you take this inside? The kids have been out too long. We wouldn't want them catching a cold, would we?"

"True. I'm sorry." replied Mr. Lawler, gently helping both kids to their feet before approaching his wife. On reaching her, he kissed her softly on the lips, a charming smile radiating from his face as he withdrew.

"Eeeewww." exclaimed Maggie, cringing and turning her gaze away.

"Not 'eewww,' Maggie. She's your mother."

"I don't care, get a room anyway."

Maggie retorted with playful disdain.

Their conversation, however, was abruptly interrupted by the roaring sound of a vehicle's engine. It was an unusual occurrence, given their remote location far from the city and the lack of neighbors. Visitors were a rarity, and the only vehicle sound they typically heard was Mr. Lawler's.

The approaching black jeep slowly pulled up to their driveway, leaving the family amazed and slightly on edge.

The driver and front passenger doors immediately swung open, revealing a well-dressed bodyguard and his associate. Without hesitation, the driver advanced to the rear passenger door and opened it with a flourish.

A massive figure, who was none other than Beast, stepped out, taking measured glances around the household. With a loud heave, he moved forward, making way for the true man of the hour, Otto.

Otto stepped out of the car, pausing to inhale deeply before turning his gaze to the Lawler family. His presence was commanding, exuding an air of authority and confidence.

"David Lawler. It's so nice to see you." Otto said, his voice resonating with a blend of familiarity and underlying tension.

Mr. Lawler's playful demeanor shifted to one of guardedness as he took in the sight of Otto. The children's laughter faded into a tense silence, the unexpected visitor's presence casting a shadow over the winter scene.

"What brings you here, Otto?" Mr. Lawler asked, his tone measured, masking the unease that lay beneath.

Otto's eyes flicked to each member of the Lawler family before settling back on Mr. Lawler.

"I believe we have some unfinished business to discuss."

The tension between them was palpable. The joyous winter scene had taken on a new, ominous tone, transforming the atmosphere. The children's innocent play had given way to a moment fraught with uncertainty, one that would undoubtedly alter the course of their lives.
