Chapter 18 - One Way Out

Slam!

Lock!

Just in the nick of time, after Mrs. Lawler and Eddy had made their way into the room, Maggie swiftly shut the door shut as fast as she could, and wasting no time, she locks it as well.

The heavy heaves of both Mrs. Lawler and Eddy soared about the room. However, the constant bangs and clawing on the other side of the door was a constant reminder for their alertness.

However, this matterened not to Eddy. His mother was safe, and his sister as well, and that was all he could've possibly asked for at that juncture. Now, since they were all present, safe and sound, all that was left was an escape plan.

Releasing a stressful groan aloud, he gradually rises to his feet while still heaving loudly as he hoped to catch his breathe.

Mrs. Lawler on the other hand was helped up to the bed by Maggie. On reaching the bed, she throws her weight to it, sitting upright in the structure. She knew far too well that the door was equivalent to a curtain in terms of halting the possessed's movements. Therefore, the most logical option would be to escape.

Eddy however, had other thoughts in mind, like comprehending what the situation actually was. So, he casually turned over to his mother, sharing a glance with her.

"Who are those people?"

Pausing for a moment, Mrs. Lawler shares a glance with Maggie right before she returned her gaze to Eddy as she inwardly contemplated her reply. They might have been kids to her but the least she could do as a mother was to be truthful to them, even if it meant she would scare them.

"Not who, 'what'. They're possessed."

Puzzled by her remark, Eddy maintained his glance at her with a face of astonishment and ofcourse, fear. As any normal child of the world, he had been lectured on the existence and negative effects of possessed. However, never in his life had he encountered or seen a possessed at the very least, which as all would expect, made him believe their existence was a fairy tale at best.

Whatever the case or his beliefs were, they were shattered to bits as now he had seen first hand the dreadful nature of the possesseds.

"I thought they were a bad bed time story."

Mrs. Lawler gradually lowers her gaze as she averts the worrisome eyes of her son.

Unfortunately, this only made matters worse for them. To her, she was only letting them in on the full story, but to Maggie, she was letting them in on the truth of the matter- the truth which was that this was the end for them all.

"Are we gonna die?" Maggie cried out with a sorrowful tone in her voice as saddened drops of tears rolled down her.

" What should I say?" She thought to herself.

The most obvious answer was to keep her children in a calm state by assuring them of their safety as any normal parent would do, but that wasn't the problem. The problem in the situation was how she could possibly assure her child of their safety when she didn't believe her survival herself.

Regardless of that, even if the odds were turned on her and her family, or even if there was no escape for them, she could atleast maintain as much peace between them as she possibly could, no matter the matter they had befallen into.

Therefore, laying her hands on Maggie's shoulder, she honestly replies to Maggie's remark whilst she swiped Maggie's tears away with her hands.

"No baby... we're not gonna...."

Pausing her speech for a moment, almost as though she couldn't bare to utter such a statement she didn't believe, she swiftly casted her gaze to the floor, right before she returned it to Maggie.

"...We're gonna make it out of this, okay?"

"You have a plan?" Eddy questioned, intrigued by his mother's statement.

Releasing a short sigh of uncertainty, she returns her glance to Eddy, contemplating whether or not informing her of her plans were worthwhile.

"Yes. Your dad should be on his way home by now. The forest is big and you know your away around it. If you guys can make it out on time and get to your father before he gets here, you could have a chance of survival."

It did make sense, or atleast it sounded worthwhile. The possessed's might have been a formidable opponent, but navigating their way through the forest might have been hard for them, or so he had wished. Therefore, not only would their escape be assured, but they secure secure the safety of Mr. Lawler before he got to the house. It was brilliant, and quite frankly worth putting into practice. However, a phrase within Mrs. Lawler's last statement brought about a shadow of doubt on her plan, which Eddy wasted no time to point out.

"' you guys'? What do you mean 'you guys'? You're coming too."

With a somber look on her face, she casted her gaze down once more as she averted Eddy's gaze.

"Eddy. I can't."

"Yes you can. You will-"

"I can't." She swiftly cut in, raising her glance to him once more.

It was at that moment that he realized, just below her torso, her hands were constantly pressed on a wound caused by the possessed she had encountered last.

A heartbreaking scene indeed. He had hoped that his stepping in to save his mother was executed right on time, only to be met with the disheartening scene. It was far from obvious she could barely move, let alone to climb or run away fro the possessed, and giving their young stature, they were incapable of carrying her the whole way.

"No...no...I saved you."

"Eddy we don't have time for this."

"No! No! I'm not gonna do it. I'm not gonna let you die!" Eddy yelled aloud to his mother, determined to keep her alive.

"I'm not gonna die."

"Bullshit!" He cursed at his mother, which was quite unusual as he was never known to be fund of swearing, but perhaps the situation had gotten into his head.

Their rants however only made matters worse as they pumped the possesseds to strive further to attain entrance into the room, roaring aloud as the loudful bangs and claws to the door increased immensely. This then seeded more fear into Maggie, who whimpered softly in fear.

The more time they wasted, they lesser chance they had in survival. Therefore no matter what did happen, Mrs. Lawler needed to make sure they were out of the rook as soon as possible.

"Just listen to me for once in your life Eddy! I need you to take your sister and make a run for it, okay? The sooner you get help, the better for all of us."

"I can't leave you to die."

"I'm not...I'm not gonna die. I'll hide out in the closet."

"No...mum!..." Maggie whimpered aloud as she began to wail softly once again.

"Eddy please! Just do this for-"

Thud!

Her words were immediately cut short by a loud thud from behind, causing them all to instinctively turn to the source. There, they saw the disheartening sight—the possessed had broken through the door!
