Chapter 9 - Acting as a Prince is Hard as F*ck (2)

The next day, Adrian woke up with a renewed sense of purpose. The morning sun filtered through his heavy drapes, casting warm light on the opulent furnishings. As he prepared for another day of princely duties, the reality of his situation hit him anew.

James, ever punctual, entered the room with a stack of paperwork and a fresh pot of tea. "Good morning, Your Highness," he said, setting the items on the table.

"Morning, James," Adrian replied, looking at the pile with a groan. "I see you've brought me a mountain of 'fun.'"

James chuckled. "Just the usual correspondence and some invitations to review."

Adrian sighed and picked up a letter, scanning it briefly. "Another gala invitation. How many of these things do we really need? I feel like I've been to more parties than I have meals this month."

James grinned. "It's part of the job, Your Highness. The more you attend, the more you're seen as a dedicated ruler."

Adrian raised an eyebrow. "Right. So basically, I'm here to be seen and not heard. Got it."

As Adrian waded through the paperwork, James moved around the room, adjusting various items and tidying up. Suddenly, a loud crash came from the hallway. James hurried to the door and poked his head out.

"What was that?" Adrian asked, peering over his shoulder.

"Not sure, Your Highness," James replied, returning with a bemused expression. "But it seems someone might be having a bit of a mishap."

"Probably one of the new servants," Adrian said with a sigh. "They're still getting used to the 'royal way' of doing things."

Moments later, a flustered young servant burst into the room, clutching a tray with a broken vase. "Your Highness, I am so sorry! I tripped and—"

Adrian held up a hand, trying to suppress a laugh. "It's alright. Just… try not to break anything else. We're already short on intact vases."

The servant, relieved but still embarrassed, quickly exited the room. Adrian and James exchanged amused glances.

"See?" Adrian said, shaking his head. "Even the simple things are complicated when you're a prince."

James nodded. "True. But at least you have the grace to handle these mishaps with humor. Many would be far less forgiving."

Adrian smirked. "Well, it's either laugh or cry. And I've already used up my tears for the month."

They spent the morning reviewing invitations and attending to various royal duties. As lunchtime approached, Adrian found himself staring longingly at the clock, counting down the minutes until he could escape to the solace of his private quarters.

James noticed the look of longing on Adrian's face. "Would you like to take a break, Your Highness? Perhaps a short walk in the gardens might lift your spirits."

Adrian's eyes lit up. "That sounds perfect. Anything to escape these endless forms and ceremonial duties."

The two of them strolled through the palace gardens, the crisp air and vibrant flowers providing a welcome respite. Adrian breathed deeply, savoring the simple pleasure of the outdoors.

"You know, James," Adrian said as they walked, "I've been thinking. Maybe I should get a hobby. Something to take my mind off all this royal stuff."

James raised an eyebrow. "Such as?"

Adrian considered for a moment. "I don't know. Maybe fencing. Or cooking. Or both—'Royal Chef' with a sword in hand. That could be a sight."

James chuckled. "I'm sure the kingdom would be fascinated by such an endeavor. But I think it's a good idea. Having something outside of royal duties might help alleviate some of the stress."

Adrian smiled, feeling a renewed sense of optimism. "Thanks, James. I guess it's good to know that even in this world of constant appearances, there's room for a little bit of personal freedom."

James nodded in agreement. "Indeed, Your Highness. It's important to find balance, even within the confines of royalty."

As they returned to the palace, Adrian felt a newfound sense of purpose. Despite the challenges, he was determined to find joy in his role and embrace the occasional moments of normalcy. And with James by his side, navigating the trials of princely life felt just a bit more manageable.
