Chapter 31 - Old Wounds

"You talk like you are not acquainted with us, Stormbringer of the Phantoms Pact." He said with a slight smirk on his face.

"... What?"

Renji said in confusion, in the whole continent the Phantoms Pact was one of the most popularly known dark guild thanks to their track records. 70 crimes successfully executed with each crimes having a total of 30 deaths and above, who wouldn't be afraid of such guilds?

"Stormbringer?" The more they kept talking the more Haru lost his motivation to fight because the confusion progressed even further.

"Yes, every where he goes a storm follows hence the name, Stormbringer. Quite a irony right? And it's all thanks to his wind magic, so now you're rolling with the Dancing Phoenix?" They all chuckled as their eyes followed the carriage which drove at high speeds.

"Were you part of the Phantoms Pact Renji?" Haru's expression changed slightly, judging by what they all said Renji was arguably one of the Phantoms Pact weakest.

"I don't know, my memories are still a bit fuzzy but I think I recognize that nam-"

POW!

Almost immediately, Renji was driven to the ground by a powerful punch from Haru. The six men laughed out loudly.

"That's what you get for thinking a thief of your caliber could join a magic guild without suffering the consequences for his sins. Now we have the luxury of watching them tear you apar-"

"Shut up." Haru proclaimed with a stern voice.

He turned to face Renji who stared at him with confusion, it seems the life of the previous inhabitant of his body had compromised him.

"That's for all the people you've harmed when you were still with the Pact." He said as he stretched out his hand, offering Renji aid.

"Huh?" The six men from the Phantoms Pact were all startled by the sudden change in his behavior.

"Atone for your sins and help me take down this criminals." Haru added with his face beaming with excitement.

Renji chuckled softly before stretching his hand out, Haru pulled him up to his feet and together they both faced the six men.

"Alright! Let's do this! Renji!" Haru exclaimed as he clenched his fist with his determination rising back up to the surface.

"You're a surprising one, beast of the Phoenix. How could you forgive him so easily?" Nicholas who was arguably the leader of the group sent to assasinate Amelia asked.

"Because, unlike your pathetic guild." As Haru spoke, a red aura circulated his fist. "The Dancing Phoenix is a guild that offers a second chance!" He propelled himself up in the air towards them.

As he descended towards them, he aimed his magic cloaked fist down at them. "Beast Magic: Primal Fist!" He utilized his beast magic to take on the strength of a mountain lion.

Just before his fist could strike the ground, the three men on the ground leaped upwards onto the tree branches.

BOOM!

The ground beneath his fist shattered instantly like glass, fragments of the destroyed ground tossed around in several directions giving rise to a cloud of dust.

"You three, chase after the carriage. Once the girl crosses the borders we've failed, we'll deal with them." Nicholas said as he ordered three of his men to hunt down and kill Amelia before she crosses the borders.

Nodding simultaneously in affirmation, they made their way through the trees and scoured down the path the carriage followed.

"You're not going anywhere!" Renji exclaimed as he ran after them but was quickly intercepted by two giant golems created instantly from the ground.

The hands of the golem descended swiftly towards him but before they could crush him, the magic cloaked fists of Haru crushed them both to dust.

"You take care of these three Renji, I'll stop them." Haru said as he landed on his feet before chasing down the other three thieves that chased after the carriage.

"Alright then." He responded as he turned around to face Nicholas and his remaining two companions. "This is where it ends."

"Ends?" Nicholas and his companions laughed out loudly, Renji was considered one of the weakest while he was still in the Phantom Pact. However they were unaware that this wasn't the Renji they once knew.

He stared at them with a blank expression on his face, he had no idea why they laughed as hardly as they did.

"Don't get the wrong idea Storm, you were nothing but a weak liability back then and that is why we abandoned you to those beings. Now we'll finish the job it couldn't."

Nicholas said as he placed his two palms on the ground, electricity coursed from his palms and into the ground all around Renji. Five golems larger than the one's previously rose from the electrified ground and circled round Renji.

"Allow me to demonstrate, Renji Storm the true power of my Transmutation magic." He added.

[Notification]

[An urgent quest has been activated]

[Severe bloodlust has been detected]

[Defeat the enemy to ensure the Mythic's safety]

[Failure to do so will result in an appropriate penalty quest]

[Enemies defeated: 0/3]

"ARGH!!" Renji groaned in pain instantly as the notification popped up, he held his head tightly and fell to his knees as he felt an intense ringing in his ears.

The memories of his body's previous inhabitant rushed like an ever flowing stream through his mind, memories including his death resurfaced and he remembered vividly the faces of those who had abandoned him to die, one of them was Nicholas.

The ringing stopped, all the memories partaining to the death of the previous hosts were restored and Renji's expression changed drastically. His eyes reflected the previous hosts desire for revenge and his brows furrowed in his anger.

"So you're the one responsible for his death." Renji said as he stood slowly to his feet with his hair casting a shadow over his eyes.

"Yes, and this time I'll make sure to complete the job." As Nicholas replied, the golems drove their hands downwards at Renji simultaneously with the aim of crushing him.

CLAP!

As their hands drove Renji through the ground, the force exerted on him created a shockwave which ripped through the ground.

"Let's just hope he stays dead." Nicholas said as him and his other two companions walked forward to pursue the carriage but was stopped immediately by the crumbling of his golems.

"What!?" He shouted with disbelief as his golems crumbled to pieces before falling to the ground, standing in the middle of the shattered golems was Renji who still had his hair casting a shadow over his eyes.

"All he ever wanted was to feel among." Renji said referring to the previous inhabitant of his body, from the memories that returned he was able to ascertain the reason why his previous host had joined a criminal guild.

He was an outcast, an orphan utterly rejected by the society. He had no friends, no family, no loved ones, only a curse which had haunted him throughout his lifetime. The curse of wind magic, his magic always responded to his rage creating storms that ripped through houses and stalls and that made him utterly dangerous to be around.

Just when he lost hope, the Phantom Pact took him in, treated him like family and provided for him. He grew up with the Phantom Pact and became ever loyal to them.

"But just when he thought he felt among, you bastards killed him." Renji growled as he raised his head up, revealing his eyes which were filled with bloodlust.

They were at a loss for words, they couldn't understand who Renji was talking about but that was the least of their worries.

"What are you waiting for? Get him!" Nicholas exclaimed as he ordered his two companions to kill him.

They both dashed forward instantly at Renji who remained still, as they got in range they unsheathed their knives and cloaked it with their magic attempting to cut off his head and carve out his heart. However, before they could even break through his skin Renji vanished from their sights and appeared right behind them staring down at Nicholas.

Before they could realize what had happened, they felt a sharp pain in their backs. They forcefully ejected blood from their mouths before they were launched through several trees at once, by the time they hit the ground their spines were broken and they were already dead.

[Enemies slain: 2/3]

"W-What?" Nicholas was stunned, he stepped backwards in disbelief as his two most trusted men were killed in the blink of an eye.
