Chapter 10 - Suspicions

Damien was not interested in whatever information the guards were going to share with Xavier. Anyway, he had Dan, who would let him know what was going on.

"I will take my leave then," Damien said to Xavier as he stepped past the guards and headed inside the large mansion.

As he had regained most of the memories of the predecessor of this body, he was not worried about getting lost in this gigantic mansion.

Once he left Xavier turned to look at the guards and reprimanded them lightly, "Even if you do not like him, there is no need to make such a big show of it. Though in name, he is still Miss Wistoria's husband."

"Is he worthy?" One of the guards scoffed. "His beast nucleus is shattered and all the mana in his body has been destroyed by the Tartarite Nails. With a broken body, he is more of a stain to the name of the Wolfe family than Miss Wistoria's husband."

"Even so, do not forget what position you have!" Xavier stated sternly. "Do you think you have the right to comment on the matters related to Miss Wistoria?"

The guards lowered their heads upon the reprimand but they still stubbornly believed that they were not in the wrong.

Xavier sighed. He questioned while ignoring the rebellious expressions of the guards, "Tell me what happened?"

"Oh yes!" One of the guards exclaimed upon hearing Xavier's question. He at once replied, "It's Master Nicolas. He returned from the expedition, however…"

"However?" Xavier prodded.

"However, Sir Nicolas is gravely injured," replied the other guard. "His left leg has been bleeding severely for hours and his right arm is cut off with only a few tendons connected."

"Miss Wistoria went to call for a healer but the temple only sent a low-ranking healer who could do nothing."

The guard on the right snorted and muttered darkly, "Who says that the healer didn't do anything? He aggravated the injuries of Sir Nicolas."

"That healer had no idea what had happened to Sir Nicolas and yet he went ahead and used spells which did not deal with the crux of the situation. Instead, he caused the injuries of Sir Nicolas to turn even more severe."

When Xavier heard that Sir Nicolas was injured, he could no longer sit still and rushed inside the mansion.

Sir Nicolas was not only his brother-in-arms but also his teacher!

On the other hand,

Damien walked past the glossy and luxurious-looking buildings inside the mansion.

He turned left and right before coming to a stop in front of a small building which was neither as luxurious as the other buildings that he had just seen nor was it as dilapidated as the servants' quarters.

It was just average.

"Now where was the bathing room?" Damien muttered as he looked around the small courtyard.

He needed to take a bath as his skin was covered in blood and dirt, making him feel uncomfortable.

As a doctor, he was used to staying clean and this was the first time in years that Damien was covered in such a mess.

"Brother!"

"Where have you been!?"

Damien heard two voices, he turned around and looked at the two children who came running towards him.

One of them was a fifteen-year-old boy and the other one was a little girl who looked ten or eleven years old.

These two were the siblings of Damien in this world. Henry and Priscilla.

"Why haven't you two slept yet?" Damien asked the two children.

As he was born as an orphan, Damien had always craved the warmth of a family. Even though he was thrown in a messed up situation, where his father was dead and his mother was sick while he was wearing a mark of the slave——

Damien still thought he was in much better condition than he was in his own world. At least he was not alone here.

Some people would feel concerned and worried about him.

"How could we sleep?" Henry stated in a cold voice. "You have been gone for three days and then we heard from the guards that the mountains where Burr Berries are found were attacked by Banppee Wolves."

"Priscilla couldn't even sleep a wink these days because of worry."

The little girl looked up at Damien with her blue eyes filled with concern.

She nodded and said to Damien, "Mother was also worried, we wanted to leave the house and look for you but we were not allowed to." Her voice became softer and softer as Priscilla finished speaking.

Of course, they were not allowed to leave the house.

With him missing, Wistoria and the Wolfe family wouldn't want the rest of his family to escape. As it would cause them unnecessary trouble.

As slaves, they didn't have the same rights as others.

"There is no need to worry, aren't I back safe and sound?" Damien said to the two before turning to look at the small house that was dimly lit. "Is mother awake? I have brought the Burr berries."

"…She is asleep," Henry answered as they started walking towards the small house. "She was awake just a while ago but she suddenly started coughing and complained about feeling stuffy and sore. So we gave her some sleeping pills, and now she is sleeping."

Since she was already asleep there was no need for him to wake her up for an examination, thought Damien with a light frown.

"I understand, then I will see her in the morning," Damien spoke casually, however, the two children next to him turned serious.

Henry couldn't help but say, "Royal—— I mean Mother has been waiting for you for three days, Brother Damien. And you are saying that you will see her in the morning?"

"You should go and see her now, that way Mother could be rest assured," said Priscilla.

Ah fuck. He messed up.

Damien was not used to anyone worrying or caring about him thus he did not treat this situation properly.

"I want to see her too but like you said, she was feeling sick before she fell asleep, so how can I distract her and disturb her sleep ?" Damien patted Henry on the head before saying, "I will see her in the morning, we shouldn't disturb patients."
