Chapter 52 - Chicago!

The Chicago night skyline glittered in the distance as Damon and Hugo crouched on the roof of an abandoned warehouse, their eyes fixed on the seemingly ordinary building across the street.

Despite its unremarkable appearance, the structure was anything but innocent, as beneath its surface, the structure housed one of ORION's hidden laboratories, an operation dedicated to producing Forza.

"Are we clear, Kayle?" Damon's voice was a whisper in the comms, though his posture radiated readiness, muscles ready to pounce.

Kayle's voice responded, steady and cool through their earpieces, "All clear, D. No sign of reinforcements in the vicinity. Just remember, this base is heavily fortified, and we don't know all the defenses they've got in place. Stay sharp."

Damon exchanged a quick glance with Hugo, who nodded. The two had worked together on countless missions, and had forged an almost instinctual understanding when together.

With a quick motion, Damon gestured forward. Hugo reached out with his hand, a small ripple in the air forming before them. The portal shimmered like the surface of a disturbed pond, reflecting the dim light of the streetlamps.

With practiced ease, the pair stepped through, finding themselves inside the perimeter of the ORION base. The sterile, cold interior of the building was a stark contrast to the dark, humid night outside.

The walls were steel and concrete, and the air was thick with the faint hum of machinery. Damon's eyes scanned the area, taking in the narrow corridors, the security cameras stationed at every corner, and the dense, reinforced doors that led deeper into the facility.

"Kayle, we're in," Hugo whispered, his voice steady. "We need a route to the production facility."

"Got it. Head straight down the corridor, then take the second left. There should be an elevator that'll take you to the lower levels. That's where they're hiding the lab," Kayle directed, her voice clear and calm, keeping them grounded.

As they moved silently through the corridor, Hugo flicked his wrist, using telekinesis to crush the camera's to pieces as they passed by.

Damon stayed close, his eyes and ears tuned to any signs of movement. The facility was eerily quiet, a silence that unnerved even the most battle-hardened warriors. They reached the elevator and waited as it descended, the hum of its mechanics the only sound in the building.

When the doors opened, Damon's senses were on high alert, but the space was empty. They stepped inside, and Hugo pressed the button for the lower level.

"Damon, I'm picking up unusual readings from below," Kayle's voice crackled in their ears. "It looks like there's some kind of magic dampening field. It might interfere with your abilities, so be prepared."

"Understood," Damon replied, clenching his fists, ready to summon his weapon constructs if needed. He'd faced situations like this before.places where magic was suppressed, where technology and brute force were their only tools, but he always rose up above it.

The elevator slowed as they neared their destination, and Damon felt a slight pressure in his head, a sign that the dampening field was kicking in.

Hugo's face tightened, sensing it too, but they both remained resolute. The doors opened with a quiet hiss, revealing a dimly lit corridor that stretched out like the throat of some vast, dark beast.

"Stick close," Damon muttered as they stepped out.

Hugo nodded, his eyes scanning the walls, ceilings, and floors for any sign of danger. The dampening field made his telekinesis sluggish, but his portal ability remained unaffected.

If things went south, they could still escape. Damon could see the tension in Hugo's shoulders, but there was no fear, just determination.

As they moved deeper into the facility, the air grew heavier, and the hum of machinery became more pronounced. They passed through several empty rooms, filled with strange equipment, machines that Damon could only guess were used to create Forza.

The deeper they went, the more unsettling the facility became. The walls were lined with strange symbols, faintly glowing with a sickly green light. Damon recognized them as runes, likely part of the enchantments that powered the dampening field.

Finally, they reached the end of the corridor, where a massive, reinforced door stood before them. Damon placed his hand against it, feeling the cold metal beneath his palm.

It was thick, far too thick to break down easily, even with his constructs. But they hadn't come unprepared.

Hugo stepped forward, his eyes narrowing as he focused. With a slight gesture, a portal began to form, expanding until it was large enough for them to step through.

On the other side of the portal was the room beyond the door, and Damon could see what awaited them, a sprawling laboratory filled with bubbling vats of drugs, Forza.

Damon nodded to Hugo, and they stepped through the portal together. The room was vast, with rows of vats and workstations manned by a handful of ORION scientists.

The air was thick with the scent of chemicals, and the glowing liquid in the vats cast an eerie light over the entire space.

Kayle's voice came through the comms, urgent now. "Damon, Hugo, I'm picking up movement from above, looks like you've been detected. They're sending reinforcements."

"Then we don't have much time," Damon replied, his voice cold and focused.

Without another word, Damon's hands ignited with a soft glow as he summoned a pair of weapon constructs, gleaming blades of pure energy that hummed with power. Hugo mirrored his intensity, his hands raised, ready to use his telekinesis.

The scientists in the room turned, their faces pale with fear, but they didn't have time to react.

Damon moved like a shadow, his blades cutting through the air with lethal precision, defeating the scientists swiftly, one by one without any inefficiency. In seconds, the room was cleared, the scientists incapacitated but alive. They weren't the targets. The real objective lay before them.

Hugo moved to one of the vats, his eyes narrowing as he studied the purple powder within. "This is it. This is where they're making Forza." His voice was filled with quiet anger.

"Then we end it. Now," Damon said, his voice hard.

"How do you want to play this?" Hugo asked, already knowing the answer as a smile was planted on his face.

Damon smirked, a dangerous glint in his eyes. "We burn it all to the ground."

Hugo grinned in return and raised his hand, his telekinesis surging forward despite the dampening field. At the same time, Damon focused his energy into his blades, sending waves of destructive force toward the machinery and workstations.

The lab descended into chaos as explosions rocked the room, the vats bursting one by one, sending the volatile liquid splashing across the floor.

The scent of burning chemicals filled the air as flames began to spread, consuming everything in their path. The Forza, the equipment, the notes, it was all being destroyed.

Kayle's voice cut through the noise, her tone urgent. "Reinforcements are on their way. You need to get out of there, now!"

"Understood," Damon responded, his voice clipped.

Hugo opened a portal, and they stepped through just as the flames reached the last of the vats.

The explosion behind them sent a shockwave through the portal, but they emerged unscathed back on the roof of the abandoned warehouse, the ORION base now a blazing inferno in the background.

They watched in silence as the flames consumed the building, the night sky lit up by the fiery destruction. The sounds of sirens filled the air as emergency responders began to converge on the scene, but it was too late. The base, and the Forza operation—was gone.

Kayle's voice came through the comms again, softer this time. "Good work, both of you. That's one less ORION base to worry about."

Damon nodded, but his expression remained grim. "One down, more to go. ORION's not going to stop, and neither are we."

Hugo glanced at Damon, seeing the fire still burning in his eyes. He knew his friend wouldn't rest until ORION was completely dismantled, until the world was safe from their influence.

As they turned to leave, the flames reflected in their eyes, they knew this was only the beginning of the battle against ORION. But with every base destroyed, with every lab burned, they were one step closer to victory.

And they would stop at nothing to see it through.
