Jacquelyn's soft voice cracked as she replied to Kael's question, her chest rising and falling rapidly. Fear gripped her entirely; saying she was terrified would be an understatement. She had just witnessed a whole village slaughtered before her eyes. She couldn't stop herself from imagining what might have happened if she hadn't tried to protect the child. Maybe Grisie was right. The man standing in front of her wasn't someone with goodness in him. He was the devil, just as Griselda had said, and the only reason he lived alone in the mountains was because of the lost souls he had killed and the darkness he left in his wake.
