Chereads / Jason Steel / Chapter 3 - Recovery and Confession

Chapter 3 - Recovery and Confession

Later at the school, Ethan was walking down an empty hallway. He stopped in front of a door to another room. The sign above it said "Medical Center". Ethan walked in. Inside the room were several beds with white sheets and white curtains beside them. Something you would normally see in a hospital. To the left was a little office with a desk, computer, several open cabinets filled with medical supplies, and a woman who was sitting on a chair by it. She was looking at the screen which had many different files open. The woman had bright blond wavy hair that went down to her shoulders and had lightly bright lips. Her eyes were bright pink. She wore a white lab coat and blue jeans which indicated that she was the doctor here.

There were a few students sitting on the beds. They had some bandages covering some cuts and wounds. One student had some bloody tissue stuck in his nose. At the far end of the room, there was a curtain that was open in front of a bed. Before Ethan could take another step, the woman got up and turned around towards Ethan.

Ethan: Dr. Katie, I just wanted to check on Jason.

Dr. Katie: He's in the back. But he's asleep right now and I don't want to wake him up.

Ethan: Ah, good point. He gets pretty pissed off when he gets woken up in a bad way.

Jason (calling out): Actually, I'm awake now!

Ethan: Oh. Nice.

Dr. Katie: Well then I guess you're free to check on him.

Ethan headed to the back of the room. Dr. Katie followed behind Ethan. Ethan was about to reach for the curtain when Dr. Katie walked in front of him.

Dr. Katie (insistent): Let me get that.

Ethan: Okay.

Dr. Katie grabbed the curtain and pulled it to the left. There, laying on the bed was Jason. Jason had his shirt off and had bandages tightly wrapped around his chest as well as around his arms from trying to block Principal Carter's first attack.

Ethan: How are you doing?

Jason: I'm fine. Just waiting to get out.

Dr. Katie: I know you're impatient but you need to wait a few more minutes.

Ethan: It's only been an hour! He's ready to leave already?

Dr. Katie: Yellow Electrens are thankfully very resilient and heal moderately faster than other Electrens. However, Jason has always been an unusual case as I've seen him heal even faster than most Yellow Electrens.

Dr. Katie suddenly looked at Jason and put her hands over her mouth.

Dr. Katie (embarrassed): Oh! I didn't mean that in a bad way! I meant that in a way-

Jason (interrupting): It's fine. Don't worry. I know what you meant.

Dr. Katie (relieved): Thank goodness.

Ethan turned back to Jason.

Ethan: I know you've always been a fast healer but this is fast even for you.

Dr. Katie: I believe that would have to do with the fact that his healing ability has improved over time. Though this is normally not this fast.

Suddenly, a young woman wearing a white lab coat walked in the room. She had black hair that was in a ponytail. Her eyes were a pale shade of blue. She appeared to be only slightly older than Jason and Ethan yet she gave off an impression of being a serious and mature woman.

Dr. Katie: Oh good. You are here Ms. Aurora. Come help me remove Jason's bandages.

Aurora: Yes Dr. Katie.

Aurora walked to where Dr. Katie, Ethan and Jason were.

Dr. Katie: Ethan, would you please give us some room?

Ethan: Oh, sorry.

Ethan backed up from Jason's bed. Aurora then moved to where Ethan was previously standing.

Dr. Katie sat Jason up and began unraveling Jason's bandages that were on his chest.

Dr. Katie: I know he means well but Mr. Carter always takes things too far. Still, I never thought he would actually fight the students.

Ethan: Yeah, I tried to talk him out of it but he kept pressuring Jason.

Dr. Katie got the bandages off of Jason and gave them to Aurora. Aurora suddenly started to stare at Jason's chest which was very well muscular.

Aurora (to herself): Wow.

Dr. Katie: I'm just glad Cynthia was there to stop it before the students really got hurt. And Jason as well.

Jason: I'm fine now. I can-

Dr. Katie (interrupting): Show me your arm.

Jason showed Dr. Katie his arm that was bandaged up. Dr. Katie began to unravel the bandages that were on there.

Jason (continuing): I can survive anything.

Jason then noticed Aurora staring at him. He started to blush from embarrassment and looked away.

Jason (shyly): Uh.

Dr. Katie: Thoughts like that is what gets you hurt. You need to be more careful Jason.

Jason (embarrassed): Do you think you could not stare at me like that?

Dr. Katie suddenly turned around towards Aurora who turned red out of embarrassment as a result of realizing what she was doing.

Dr. Katie (angry): Ms. Aurora!

Aurora (embarrassed): I'm so sorry! I didn't know what I was doing!

Dr. Katie: I swear! It's usually the guys that do the staring!

Ethan: I haven't been staring!

Jason: I haven't been staring either!

Dr. Katie turned around towards Jason and Ethan.

Dr. Katie (panicking): No! No! No! I didn't mean-

Ethan (interrupting): You didn't mean it like that. Right?

Dr. Katie (embarrassed): Yes.

Suddenly, Cynthia walked in from outside.

Cynthia: How's Jason doing?

Jason: Mom?

Dr. Katie: I'm about to take the last of his bandages off and then he should be done if nothing is wrong.

Jason: Oh if that all that's left-

Jason suddenly grabbed the bandages on his arm and ripped them off.

Dr. Katie (angrily): WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!

Cynthia (angrily): JASON!

Jason (confused): What?

Cynthia walked towards Jason and chopped him on the head. It made a loud thump sound. Jason grabbed his head where she hit him.

Jason (angrily): OW! WHAT WAS THAT FOR?!

Cynthia (angrily): You are not supposed to rip them off yourself!

Jason (angrily): Dr. Katie said I was done!

Dr. Katie (angrily): I said you would be done IF nothing is wrong!

Jason (annoyed): Nothing is wrong though! Look!

Jason showed Cynthia and Dr. Katie his arm.

Dr. Katie (angrily): If there was still an open wound, it would've been exposed and got infected and would take even longer to heal! You are not to remove the bandages without my consent!

Jason: Okay! Okay! I get it!

Aurora giggled to herself. Dr. Katie then started examining Jason's arm.

Dr. Katie: Okay, you're good to go.

Jason rolled his eyes.

Jason: Okay thank you. I'll be off.

Ethan: Let's go.

Jason got up from the bed. He grabbed his shirt and put it on. He then grabbed his hoodie and tied it around his waist. He then grabbed his backpack that was on the ground, next to the bed and put it around his shoulders. Then he and Ethan walked out the door and turned left through the hall. Aurora carried the bandages to a trash bin and put them in.

Cynthia: I have no idea where he gets that reckless personality from.

Dr. Katie got up and looked directly at Cynthia.

Dr. Katie: Are you being serious?

Cynthia (confused): What are you talking about?

Dr. Katie: He gets it from you!

Cynthia: Me?

Dr. Katie: Your whole persona is a friendly yet brutal teacher. I mean, you scolded the Principal for crying out loud. Most teachers would get fired for that.

Cynthia (awkwardly): Well, I often try to be mature about-

Dr. Katie (interrupting): And it's not just Jason. Valerie is also very reckless with her raw strength.

Cynthia (awkwardly): Well, she's just-

Dr. Katie (interrupting): Many of the students that end up here after a sparring match with her, nearly have their bones crushed and their limbs twisted around! One student had their skull cracked! I had to wire that shut!

Cynthia (shocked): WHAT?!

Dr. Katie (grinning): Okay, that may have been an exaggeration.

Cynthia glared at Dr. Katie. She had a look of annoyance.

Dr. Katie: The point is, you are their parent. Their only parent. So your traits and habits can rub off of your inspirational kids.

Cynthia sighed.

Dr. Katie: It's not easy being a parent, isn't it?

Cynthia: It's not.

Meanwhile, Jason and Ethan were walking down the hallway. The hallway had several doors leading to other classrooms and lockers on the right. To the left were large windows that expanded almost across the entire wall. They passed several other students who were either walking past them or talking to each other. Something you would normally see in a high school.

They both stopped in front of their lockers and opened theirs. They began taking books out and putting them in their backpacks.

Jason: It's History that's next, right?

Ethan: Actually, we are getting out early today.

Jason: Oh seriously? So History is canceled?

Ethan: Apparently.

Jason (happily): Hell yeah!

Ethan: Dude, I wouldn't get cocky. We are getting the test no matter what. So I would study if I were you.

Jason then looked down and groaned.

Jason (annoyed): Ugh! Come on!

Ethan turned towards Jason and patted his shoulder to comfort him.

Ethan: Bro, you've got this. Your grades are insane. Just concentrate.

Jason looked towards Ethan and smiled.

Jason: Thanks dude.

Jason then noticed a few boys gathered by the window. They were looking at something that was in the air.

Jason: Hey, what are they looking at?

Jason pointed towards the small group. Ethan looked at where Jason was pointing.

Ethan: I don't know. Wanna go see?

Jason: Sure I guess.

Jason and Ethan walked to where the guys were gathered. They both looked towards where the boys were looking and saw several girls floating in the air, talking to each other. The girls were very pretty and seemed oblivious to the guys staring at them.

Ethan (annoyed): Oh, so that's what they're staring at.

Ethan then approached the guys.

Ethan: Hey, I don't mean to be that guy but you shouldn't be staring at them like that.

The guys turned around and faced Ethan. They looked very annoyed.

Boy (1): Well you're definitely being "That Guy"!

Boy (2): Yeah, we're not doing anything wrong! So leave us alone!

Ethan: Hey, I was just trying to help. It's your funeral.

Boy (3): What are you talking about?

Ethan: You know those are Blue Electrens, right?

Boy (3): Well duh. Obviously.

Boy (1): Anyone can see that!

Ethan: So you don't know?

Boy (1): Know what?

Ethan: What happens when you piss off a Blue Electren.

Boy (2): They get angry?

Ethan: That's putting it lightly. You know how fast they are right?

Boy (3) (impatiently): Get to the point already!

Ethan: They are fast because they have very strong legs. So their kicks are also very strong. Now, combine that with how their Wild State makes them and you guys are going to find yourselves ganged up and beaten to a pulp.

Boy (1) (shocked): What?!

Boy (3) (nervously): You're exaggerating!

Ethan: And if I'm not, do you think you can outrun them?

The boys turned around towards the group of girls. They then turned back around and walked away. Jason who was watching all this approached Ethan.

Jason: Was all that you said true?

Ethan: Yeah but that's only if you can actually trigger their Wild State. And that requires a lot of stress. I just thought about giving them a little scare.

Jason: The Wild State. I've heard of it but I've never actually seen it happen. Let alone for it to happen to me. That's when an Electren acts only on their instincts right?

Ethan: Yeah, and I heard that a Blue Electren becomes really cruel and merciless. I bet it's not a pretty sight. However it's very rare. From what I've heard, it's because we are not in constant danger.

Jason: What about you and me? What happens when our types are in a Wild State?

Ethan pondered for a bit.

Ethan: I actually don't know. I've only heard what happens to a Blue Electren.

Jason: Considering it's a dangerous thing, I can see why we haven't learned about it in class.

Ethan: You really think some sicko would intentionally trigger the Wild State in others?

Jason: Or trigger it in themselves to get stronger. Anyways, we should probably get going.

Ethan: Hold on. I forgot something.

Ethan walked back to his locker. Meanwhile, Jason looked up back at the group of girls who were still oblivious to what happened. Suddenly, one girl caught Jason's eye. She had long wavy blond hair that reached all the way to the back of her waist. Her hair seemed to glow as the light from outside was being reflected off of it. Her eyes were a deep aqua blue and her skin was practically flawless and clear. Her body was well curved with her legs being well muscled and long. She wore a blue collar shirt that had a large white heart in the middle of it and wore a frilly dark blue mini skirt. She appeared to be also wearing blue high heels. She seemed to be very happy as her smile was radiant and full of joy and excitement.

Jason couldn't be helped but be hypnotized by her beauty. He felt his heart beat rapidly and his cheeks grow warm. The girl as well as the other with her suddenly flew to the left and out of visibility. Jason looked towards where they headed but they were already gone. Jason then turned around only to see Ethan right behind him, looking at Jason with a big smile on his face.

Ethan: I saw that.

Jason: Saw what?

Ethan: You were checking that girl out.

Jason's entire face grew hot and turned red out of embarrassment.

Jason (embarrassed): I-I wasn't doing anything!

Ethan: Then explain why you're drooling all over the place.

Jason, out of instinct, touched his face to check for drool. However, he didn't find any. He then realized that it was a trick. Jason covered his face out of embarrassment. Ethan smiled and also patted Jason's shoulder again.

Ethan: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to embarrass you like that. I've just never seen you be that attracted to a girl.

Jason (still covering his face): I really don't want to talk about it right now.

Ethan: Okay then. Oh! By the way, I found this on your locker.

Ethan showed Jason a paper that was folded up. Jason took his hands out of his face and looked at it. He then took the paper and unfolded it. The paper had writing on it. Jason read it outloud.

Jason (reading): "Meet me by the courtyard after school."

Ethan: A love letter? Maybe it's that girl from before.

Jason: Bro, she didn't even see me. And besides, I doubt this person of all people would send me a love letter.

Jason showed Ethan the letter. At the bottom of the letter was a signature that said "David Atoms". Ethan smirked as if he had a funny thought.

Ethan (mischievously): Like I said, it's a love letter.

Jason (annoyed): I'm going to hit you.

Ethan: I was joking, relax. What does he want anyway?

Jason: I don't know but guess I'll find out.

Ethan: Should I come?

Jason: No. He didn't say to come alone but if he took the time to write a letter instead of coming to me personally, he probably wants this to be private.

Ethan: Just… be careful okay? He might try something.

Jason: If he tries anything, I'll break his nose again.

Ethan (shocked): What the hell Jason?!

Jason: I was joking!

Ethan: Oh so now you have a sense of humor.

Jason: I've always had a sense of humor. You're just not funny.

Ethan: How is it that you struggle with social skills yet you take shots at people like it's a nervous tick?

Jason (annoyed): First of all, my mom says that I've gotten a lot better at social skills. Second, I do not insult that much. Third, I'll see you tomorrow!

Ethan: How is that… Nevermind, I'll see you.

Jason headed back towards the courtyard while Ethan headed in the opposite direction.

Out by the courtyard, David was standing and leaning against the wall that was next to the door that led to the inside of the school. He had a worried look on his face. Suddenly, the door opened up and hit David.

David: Ow!

Jason appeared from behind the door and looked over to David.

Jason: Oh shit! Sorry about that!

David stood up and walked away from where he was leaning. He was holding his cheek where he was hit.

David (annoyed): Watch where you're going!

Jason (annoyed): Well, it's not my fault you were standing right where the door opens!

Jason walked towards a nearby tree and leaned against it. David stood right in front of Jason.

Jason: So what did you call me out here for?

David took a deep breath as he was preparing to say something important. As he exhaled, he looked down and away from Jason.

David: The truth is, I don't come from a family of knights.

Jason (sarcastically): You don't say.

David suddenly looked up at Jason. Jason's face was unfazed and he just kept looking at David.

David (confused): W-what? Why don't you look surprised?

Jason: I kinda already figured it out a long time ago.

David took a step back out of shock.

David (shocked): You knew?! For how long?!

Jason: Last semester. And I wasn't the only one.

David (shocked): What?!

Jason: Yeah, a lot of us kinda put two and two together. Though for last class, Ethan, Hana, and I were the only ones there who knew.

David crouched to the ground and covered his face in shame.

David: Why didn't you say anything?

Jason: What good would've that done?

David (angrily): It would've saved me a lot of embarrassment!

Jason: Look man, by the time we figured it out, you were too far in to save you from any embarrassment. What I wanna know is why.

David looked up.

David: Why?

Jason stood up and walked beside David. David followed Jason and walked next to him.

Jason: Why didn't you say anything?

David said nothing for a moment. And then looked towards Jason.

David: Cause I didn't have a choice.

Jason looked towards David.

Jason: What do you mean?

David: I have nothing inspiring about me. I just come from a family of blacksmiths. I have no friends or any siblings so I was alone a lot. I wanted to clear up the confusion but after seeing that everyone wanted to be with me because they thought I was a knight, I didn't stop them.

Jason: Yeah but people kinda figured it out later on. Yet you kept the act up.

David: I was trying to make people still think I was strong.

Jason: Then why not train and actually get stronger?

David: Because training is a lot of work.

There was a long awkward pause. Jason stared at David and didn't say anything.

David: Was that stupid?

Jason (bluntly): Yeah, that was very stupid.

Jason rolled his eyes.

Jason: What about your beef with me?

David: Ms. Cynthia asked me the same thing. When I saw that people started to lose interest in me, I decided to act like there was a rivalry between us so it would keep everyone's attention.

Jason: Why me?

David looked at Jason with a confused look and a raised eyebrow.

David: Because you're one of the more popular kids here.

Jason (confused): Me? Popular? Is that a joke?

David's eyes widened in disbelief. He looked away from Jason.

David: Either you are very modest or very oblivious.

Jason (annoyed): You don't get to say that to me when you didn't even realize your façade wasn't working!

David (annoyed): Shut up!

Jason and David continued walking. David suddenly stopped and looked down. Jason then stopped right after and looked towards David.

David: Also….. I was jealous…. Of you.

David kept looking at the ground. Jason said nothing and waited.

David: You have so much going for you. You have so much electrical energy, you are a very skilled fighter, your mother is a famous warrior, you have two loyal friends always by your side, and you are practically invincible!

Jason walked towards David who was still looking down.

David: So yeah, I didn't have a choice.

Jason put his hand on David's shoulder. David looked up at Jason with tears in his eyes.

Jason: That's bullshit.

David stood up straight and backed up from shock.

David: What?

Jason: The only reason you pretended to be a knight and didn't stop the rumors was because you assumed no one would like you for who you really are. You are an unremarkable Electren because you believed you were. You shut yourself away and are afraid of your own feelings.

David paused and said nothing.

Jason: You did have a choice, and you still do now.

David: I do?

Jason: Rewrite your life and start over. Who knows? You might find someone who likes you for who you really are.

David's eyes began to tear up. He wiped his eyes and sniffed.

David: Wish I was as fearless as you.

Jason: I'm not fearless. I just try to not let my fear control me. There are things that I'm afraid of.

David: Oh yeah, I remember you were looking pretty shaken when the principal had that enormous ball of energy. Anyone would be scared of that.

Jason: Spiders.

David (confused): Huh?

Jason: I have arachnophobia. Spiders freak me the hell out.

David (awkwardly): I see…

Jason: Anyways, I wasn't always in control of my fear like I am now.

David: You weren't?

Jason walked towards the wall of the school and leaned against it. David followed him and leaned against the wall to the left of Jason.

Jason: I was a pretty big coward back then. I couldn't even talk to anyone but my mom and my sister.
