Chapter 1 - The Goodwills Manor

Guinevere Ray, or Gini, stood at the edge of the long, winding driveway leading up to Goodwills Manor, her new workplace. The early evening mist clung to the air, creating an ethereal veil that partially obscured the imposing silhouette of the mansion. As she adjusted the strap of her backpack, Gini couldn't help but feel a mixture of awe and annoyance. The manor was undeniably beautiful, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture with its dark stone faƧade and ornate detailing. But the remoteness of the location and the overwhelming sense of change that came with her new role as primary caretaker were unsettling for someone like her, who thrived on routine and familiarity.

The Goodwills Manor loomed ahead, a grand structure that seemed to emerge from the dense surrounding woods like a dark jewel. The stone was a deep grey, almost black, and the exterior was adorned with intricate marble carvings. Gini noticed how the carvings depicted scenes from mythology, with gargoyles perched menacingly at the corners of the roof, their stone eyes staring down as if guarding the secrets within. The entrance was framed by a grand archway, the heavy wooden doors set with iron hinges that looked ancient and worn.

As she walked closer, Gini's gaze wandered to the gardens that surrounded the manor. They were wild and untamed, a stark contrast to the meticulously manicured lawns of the estates she had seen in glossy magazines. The gardens were a blend of moorland and cultivated plants, with heather, wildflowers, and hardy shrubs growing in chaotic harmony. It was as if the moor had claimed the land and then been reluctantly tamed into a garden. Gini found this mix of wilderness and cultivation strangely beautiful, though she could already imagine the amount of work it would take to maintain such a landscape.

The manor was miles away from any human settlement, nestled deep in the countryside. The isolation was palpable, with only the distant sound of the wind rustling through the trees and the occasional call of a bird breaking the silence. Gini had always been a city girl, accustomed to the constant hum of activity, the easy access to amenities, and the presence of people. The thought of living in such a secluded place filled her with a sense of foreboding. She was a person who thrived on the predictable, and the routine, and the idea of being so far removed from everything she knew was daunting.

But there was no denying the allure of Goodwills Manor. Despite her apprehension, Gini couldn't help but admire the craftsmanship that had gone into its construction. The stained glass windows, each depicting a different scene, caught the last rays of the setting sun, casting colorful reflections on the ground. The tall, narrow windows were framed by intricate stone tracery, and the walls were adorned with climbing ivy, its green tendrils adding a touch of life to the otherwise dark and brooding exterior.

The interior was just as grand, if not more so. As Gini stepped through the heavy doors, she was greeted by a vast entrance hall with a high ceiling supported by dark wooden beams. The floor was a mosaic of black and white marble, polished to a shine. The walls were paneled in rich, dark wood, and lined with portraits of what she assumed were ancestors of the Goodwills family. The air was cool and carried the faint scent of old books and polished wood. Gini felt a shiver run down her spine, though she couldn't tell if it was from the chill or the sheer magnitude of the place. As she walked, she saw a painting, secluded and further away from the rest. It's seemingly new appearance suggested it was recently hanged there. A face peered out of it's canvas, a beautiful enchanting face with an annoying aura.

'He must be an obnoxious person to live with,' Gini thought as she walked past it.

To her left, a grand staircase rose to the upper floors, its banister intricately carved with the same care and detail as the exterior marble work. To her right, a long hallway stretched out, lined with closed doors. Gini knew that beyond those doors lay the rooms she would be responsible for maintaining: the library, the sitting rooms, the dining hall, and more. Each room, she had been told, was a testament to the manor's history, filled with antiques and curiosities collected over generations.

Gini sighed, feeling the weight of her responsibilities settling on her shoulders. She had taken this job to escape the monotonous cycle her life had fallen into, but now she wondered if she had bitten off more than she could chew. The manor was magnificent, a relic of a bygone era, but it also felt like a relic of a world she didn't quite belong to. The isolation, the grandeur, and the sheer scale of her new duties all felt overwhelming.

As she continued to explore, Gini noticed more peculiar details about the manor. The walls were adorned with tapestries depicting scenes of medieval life, each one more elaborate than the last. She marveled at the craftsmanship, but also found them somewhat eerie, with their lifelike figures frozen in time. The library, when she finally found it, was a cavernous room filled with shelves that reached up to the ceiling, packed with books of all sizes and ages. A massive fireplace dominated one wall, its mantle decorated with more carvings, this time of mythical creatures.

Despite the grandeur, there was an air of neglect about the place. Dust motes floated in the slivers of light that pierced through the heavy curtains, and the faint smell of mustiness lingered in the air. Gini realized that the manor had probably been without a caretaker for some time, and the prospect of bringing it back to its former glory was daunting. Yet, there was something exciting about the challenge, a chance to make a mark on this place steeped in history.

As she wandered through the manor, Gini couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. It was irrational, she knew, but the portraits on the walls seemed to follow her with their eyes, and the old mirrors reflected her image in an unsettling way. The silence was oppressive, broken only by the occasional creak of the floorboards under her feet. She tried to focus on the positive aspectsā€”the beauty of the architecture, the potential for the gardens, the chance to live in such a unique placeā€”but the unease lingered.

The sun had set by the time Gini made her way to the back of the manor, where she found a small courtyard. It was overgrown with weeds, but she could see the remnants of a once-beautiful garden. A stone fountain stood in the center, dry and cracked, with a statue of an angel holding a jug. The angel's face was serene, but there was something unsettling about its eyes, as if they had seen too much over the centuries.

Gini sat on the edge of the fountain, taking in her surroundings. The manor was beautiful, there was no denying that. But it was also intimidating, a place full of history and mystery. She knew that working here would be challenging, not just because of the physical tasks but because of the mental and emotional adjustment it would require. Gini had always struggled with change, and this was a change on a grand scale.

As she looked up at the manor, its dark silhouette stark against the twilight sky, Gini felt a mixture of emotions. Awe, fear, excitement, and apprehension all swirled within her. She had no idea what the future held, what surprises the manor might have in store for her, or how she would adapt to this new life. But she was here now, and there was no turning back.

With a sigh, Gini stood up and dusted off her jeans. She had a lot of work ahead of her, and it was time to start making this place her own. As she headed back inside, the heavy doors closing behind her with a creak, she couldn't help but feel like she was stepping into a different world. The manor was beautiful, yes, but it was also a challenge. And Gini was determined to meet it head-on, even if it meant confronting her own fears and discomfort with change.

For now, though, she would allow herself a moment to appreciate the beauty of Goodwills Manor. The marble carvings, the moor-mixed gardens, the isolationā€”everything about it was enchanting in a dark, mysterious way. As she climbed the grand staircase, the portraits on the walls watching her ascent, Gini couldn't help but feel that, despite her apprehensions, she was exactly where she needed to be.

That feeling was soon to be changed. As she never knew, that the supposedly unattended manor had a resident beside her, who in fact had no idea that she was working there from that day onwards.
