Chereads / The Orphic Elf / Chapter 16 - Visha

Chapter 16 - Visha

Visha Novalie sprinted through the darkened corridor, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she pushed herself to the limit. Behind her, the ground trembled with the heavy, predatory footfalls of the creature giving chase—a shadow panther, its form a terrifying blend of darkness and energy, surging forward with relentless intent. The beast moved with a fluid grace, its body composed of swirling shadows that seemed to shift and pulse with every step, as though the very night itself had come to life.

"Just my luck that my boss monster would be a damn cat. I'm fucking allergic to felines, dammit!" Visha muttered to herself between breaths, the frustration evident in her voice. Of all the creatures she could have faced in this cursed tower, it had to be a feline. Her allergy to cats was a running joke among her friends, but this was no laughing matter—this shadowy panther was a creature born of nightmares, and it was hell-bent on tearing her apart.

The corridor twisted and turned, offering little in the way of cover or respite. The walls were made of a strange, smooth stone that seemed to absorb the light from Visha's daggers, making the shadows around her even more oppressive. The panther's glowing purple eyes bore into her back, and she could feel its breath on her neck, a cold, unnatural wind that sent shivers down her spine.

Visha had been running for what felt like hours, her muscles burning with exhaustion, but the panther showed no signs of tiring. It was a creature of pure energy, fueled by the darkness itself, and it would not stop until it had claimed its prey. She needed a plan, something to turn the tide in her favor, but the relentless pursuit left her little time to think.

[System Alert!]

Shadow Panther Detected!

Type: Dungeon Boss

Threat Level: A-

Description: The Shadow Panther is a fearsome predator that dwells in the darkest corners of the tower. It is capable of blending into the shadows, making it nearly invisible to the naked eye. Its attacks are swift and deadly, striking from the darkness when least expected.

Abilities:

Shadow Meld: The panther can merge with the shadows, becoming nearly invisible and allowing it to ambush its prey.

Silent Pounce: A swift, silent attack that can incapacitate a target before they have a chance to react.

Dark Claws: Its claws are infused with dark energy, capable of slicing through most defenses.

Void Howl: A disorienting roar that can momentarily blind and deafen its prey.

"Great, just what I needed," Visha grumbled, glancing at the system alert with narrowed eyes. The abilities of the Shadow Panther were formidable, and she knew that if she didn't find a way to counter them soon, she wouldn't last much longer.

She felt a sharp pain in her side, her lungs burning from the exertion. She couldn't keep running forever, and the panther was getting closer with each passing second. Its presence was a living nightmare, a shadow that loomed over her, hungry and malevolent.

Desperation fueled her movements as she searched for anything in her surroundings that could give her an edge. The corridor seemed to stretch on endlessly, offering no sanctuary, no place to hide. The shadows danced and flickered, playing tricks on her eyes, making it difficult to tell where the panther was or when it would strike.

Visha's thoughts raced as she tried to remember the layout of the area. There had to be something—anything—that she could use to turn the tables. The panther was a creature of shadows, but perhaps there was a way to use that against it.

Suddenly, she spotted a narrow alcove up ahead, just large enough to squeeze into. It was a gamble, but she didn't have many options left. With a burst of speed, she dove toward the alcove, barely making it inside as the panther lunged at her. Its claws scraped against the stone, narrowly missing her as she pressed herself against the cold wall, trying to make herself as small as possible.

The panther let out a low growl, its glowing eyes peering into the alcove, searching for any sign of movement. Visha held her breath, her heart pounding in her ears as she waited, hoping that the creature would lose interest and move on.

But the panther wasn't so easily fooled. It circled the alcove, its growls reverberating through the stone, making Visha's skin crawl. She knew it was only a matter of time before it found her, and then it would be all over.

Visha's mind raced as she tried to come up with a plan. She needed to strike first, to catch the panther off guard. But how could she fight something that could become one with the shadows, something that could strike from any direction without warning?

She glanced at her daggers, their blades glinting faintly in the dim light. An idea began to form in her mind, a risky plan that might just give her the edge she needed. She waited, biding her time as the panther continued to search for her.

When she sensed that the panther was close, she took a deep breath and activated one of her abilities—Shadow Veil. Her body shimmered for a moment before blending into the shadows around her, becoming nearly invisible. The panther, sensing something was amiss, hesitated, its growls growing louder as it tried to locate her.

Visha used the opportunity to slip out of the alcove, moving silently along the wall. The panther was still focused on the alcove, unaware that its prey had moved. She circled around behind it, her heart pounding as she prepared to strike.

With a quick, fluid motion, Visha lunged at the panther, her daggers aimed for the vulnerable spot just behind its neck. The blades sank into the shadowy flesh, meeting resistance as they struck something solid. The panther let out a roar of pain, its body convulsing as it tried to shake her off.

Visha held on, driving her daggers deeper, twisting them to inflict as much damage as possible. The panther's struggles grew more frantic, its body writhing as it tried to escape. But Visha didn't relent, pouring all of her strength into the attack.

Finally, with a final, shuddering gasp, the panther collapsed, its body dissolving into a swirling mass of shadows that dissipated into the air. Visha fell to the ground, panting heavily as she watched the last remnants of the creature fade away.

In her hands, the daggers appeared, their blades a deep, shadowy black with a faint purple hue that seemed to pulse with a life of its own. =====

The corridors Visha found herself in after the intense battle with the Shadow Panther were a stark contrast to the more open, expansive areas she had navigated earlier. The walls were rugged and lined with ancient stone, giving the impression of a place long forgotten by time. Dim light filtered through cracks in the ceiling, casting eerie shadows that danced across the floor. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and the faint, lingering odor of something long dead.

Skulls and bones were scattered throughout the corridor, some arranged in macabre displays that seemed almost ritualistic. The walls were adorned with purple flowers that hung in clusters, their petals glowing faintly with an otherworldly light, providing just enough illumination to see by. Candles, placed in the eye sockets of skulls or atop makeshift stone altars, flickered and cast long, wavering shadows that made the corridor feel alive with unseen movements.

Visha moved cautiously through the corridor, her senses heightened after the adrenaline-fueled encounter with the Shadow Panther. The silence was oppressive, broken only by the occasional drip of water echoing through the space. Every step she took felt amplified, the sound of her boots against the stone floor reverberating in the confined space.

She couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched. The shadows seemed to shift and move just at the edge of her vision, and she found herself glancing over her shoulder more than once. The corridor twisted and turned, the layout designed to disorient and confuse. But Visha kept her wits about her, knowing that losing her sense of direction here could be deadly.

As she rounded a corner, she came across a small alcove carved into the wall. Inside, a stone bench was flanked by two large skulls, their eye sockets filled with melted candle wax. It looked like a place of rest or perhaps a shrine of some kind. Visha paused, considering whether to take a moment to catch her breath. She decided against it, the oppressive atmosphere urging her to keep moving.

The deeper she went, the more unsettling the corridor became. The walls seemed to close in, the air growing colder and heavier. The purple flowers became more sparse, their glow dimming, making it harder to see. The sense of being watched grew stronger, and Visha's hand tightened around the hilt of her dagger, ready to draw it at a moment's notice.

Just as she began to wonder if the corridor would ever end, she saw a faint light up ahead. It was different from the eerie glow of the flowers or the flicker of candles—this light was steady and inviting, a beacon in the darkness. She quickened her pace, eager to leave the oppressive corridor behind.

As she drew closer, the corridor widened into a larger chamber. The walls here were still lined with bones and skulls, but they were more organized, almost decorative. The ceiling was higher, allowing more light to filter in from the cracks above. In the center of the chamber was a circular stone platform, and at its heart was a large, ornate door, glowing with a soft, inviting light.

Relief washed over Visha as she approached the door. She could feel the warmth of the light, a stark contrast to the cold, oppressive atmosphere of the corridor she had just navigated. She took a moment to collect herself, checking her inventory and making sure she had everything she needed for the next stage of her journey.

With a final, deep breath, she stepped onto the stone platform. The light from the door enveloped her, filling her with a sense of calm and readiness. She placed her hand on the door, feeling the warmth spread through her fingers. The door responded to her touch, slowly opening to reveal a passageway bathed in light.
