Chapter 17 - Ilayda

Ilayda Novalie stood at the edge of the vast, water-filled cavern, her sharp eyes locked onto the massive creature that swam gracefully through the depths below. The beast was serpentine, its long, sinuous body moving with a fluidity that made it seem like an extension of the water itself. Its scales shimmered in hues of deep blues and purples, catching the light from the bioluminescent plants that clung to the cavern walls. The creature's wings, more akin to fins, fanned out on either side of its body, propelling it effortlessly through the water. Its head was crowned with long, elegant tendrils that trailed behind it like streamers, and its glowing eyes, bright with an otherworldly intensity, locked onto Ilayda with an unnerving focus.

"You have got to be kidding me."

As she stared at the water serpent, Ilayda instinctively activated her Identify skill, hoping to gain some insight into what she was up against. But to her surprise, the system returned a blank response, as if the creature defied categorization or was beyond her current abilities to comprehend.

[Identify]

Target: Unknown

Information: Unavailable

Ilayda frowned, her head tilting slightly in confusion. "Why does Identify show this monster as blank?" she muttered under her breath. The water serpent seemed to sense her hesitation, for it suddenly surged upward with a speed that belied its size, its massive body cutting through the water like a blade. The surface of the water broke with a thunderous crash as the serpent lunged at her, its jaws wide open to reveal rows of razor-sharp teeth.

Ilayda's instincts kicked in, and she dove to the side, barely avoiding the creature's snapping jaws. She rolled to her feet, her heart pounding in her chest, and unsheathed her spear, the weapon's sharp tip glinting in the dim light. She took a deep breath, steadying herself as she prepared to fight. Whatever this creature was, it was powerful—and she would need every ounce of her skill and strength to survive.

The serpent let out a bone-rattling roar that echoed through the cavern, causing the water around it to churn violently. Ilayda barely had time to react as the creature lunged again, its massive body twisting and coiling as it struck with lightning speed. She leaped back, her spear at the ready, and aimed for the creature's exposed underbelly as it reared up. But when her spear struck, it glanced off the serpent's scales with a sharp clang, leaving only a shallow scratch.

The serpent recoiled, letting out an enraged hiss, its eyes narrowing as it fixed its gaze on Ilayda. She could feel the temperature around her drop, the light from the bioluminescent plants dimming as the serpent's presence seemed to draw the very life out of the cavern. This was no ordinary beast—it was a force of nature, a creature born of the deep, dark waters that filled the cavern.

Ilayda gritted her teeth, her mind racing as she analyzed the situation. The serpent's scales were nearly impenetrable, and its speed and agility made it a formidable opponent. But there had to be a weakness—something she could exploit to turn the tide of the battle.

As the serpent coiled back, preparing to strike again, Ilayda's eyes flicked to the glowing plants and crystals embedded in the cavern walls. The light from the plants seemed to pulse in time with the creature's movements, as if they were connected in some way. A thought struck her—perhaps the plants and crystals were amplifying the serpent's power, or at the very least, they were tied to its strength.

With that in mind, Ilayda adjusted her strategy. Instead of attacking the serpent directly, she shifted her focus to the plants and crystals. She moved quickly, darting to the side and launching herself at the nearest cluster of glowing flora. Her spear struck with precision, severing the stems and causing the plants to wither and dim.

The effect was immediate. The serpent let out a pained screech, its body convulsing as the light in its eyes flickered. The connection between the creature and the bioluminescent plants was undeniable now, and Ilayda knew she was on the right track.

Emboldened, she continued her assault on the plants and crystals, moving with a speed and agility that kept her just out of the serpent's reach. Each time her spear destroyed another cluster, the serpent grew weaker, its movements more erratic and desperate. But even in its weakened state, the creature was still a deadly threat, its attacks growing more frenzied as it fought to protect its source of power.

Ilayda's muscles burned with exertion, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she pushed herself to the limit. She could feel the serpent's dark energy swirling around her, oppressive and malevolent, but she didn't let it deter her. With each plant she destroyed, the serpent's strength waned, and she knew she was close to turning the tide.

Finally, with one last, powerful strike, Ilayda severed the largest cluster of bioluminescent plants in the cavern. The serpent let out a final, anguished roar as its body convulsed violently, the light in its eyes fading to nothingness. With a massive crash, the creature's body collapsed back into the water, its once-imposing form sinking into the depths, lifeless.

Ilayda stood at the edge of the water, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath. The battle had been intense, but she had emerged victorious. The Abyssal Water Serpent, as the system identified it, was no more, and she had gained valuable rewards for her efforts.

As she collected the Abyssal Chaos Shards and the Abyssal Crystal Core, Ilayda couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction. The fight had been grueling, but it had also tested her in ways she hadn't anticipated, forcing her to think on her feet and adapt her strategy in the heat of battle.

With the rewards secured, Ilayda took a moment to survey the now-calm cavern. The bioluminescent plants that had once glowed so brightly were now dim and lifeless, their power spent. The oppressive atmosphere had lifted, replaced by a calm stillness that felt almost peaceful.

Ilayda left the cavern where she had defeated the Abyssal Water Serpent, her thoughts focused on finding the entrance to the next floor of the Tutorial Tower. The battle had been grueling, but she felt a sense of accomplishment, bolstered by the valuable rewards she had secured. As she moved through the damp, twisting passages, her guard remained up, knowing that the tower's dangers were far from over.

However, she hadn't gone far when her system screen flickered with an alarming series of notifications.

[System Alert!]

Warning: Deadly Threat Detected

Status: Fatal Danger Approaching

Distance: 500 meters

Urgency: Immediate

Ilayda's heart skipped a beat as she stared at the notifications. She quickly scanned her surroundings, but the passage she was in was too narrow and winding to see far ahead or behind. Before she could fully comprehend the situation or decide on a course of action, a massive tremor shook the cavern, followed by a deafening roar that echoed through the stone walls, shaking loose dust and debris.

She barely had time to brace herself before the colossal form of the Abyssal Water Serpent's mother, far larger and more terrifying than the creature she had just slain, burst into view. The creature's enraged eyes, glowing with an intense blue fury, locked onto Ilayda immediately, and she knew she had only moments to react.

The serpent lunged at her with terrifying speed, its massive jaws snapping shut just as Ilayda threw herself to the side. But she wasn't quick enough. The beast's attack caught her along her side, tearing through her armor and flesh with brutal force. The pain was immediate and searing, her blood pouring from the deep gash as she stumbled, barely managing to keep on her feet.

[System Alert!]

Status: Critical Injury Sustained

Warning: Blood Loss Imminent

Recommendation: Seek Immediate Shelter

But there was no time for shelter. The Abyssal Serpent was already coiling back, ready to strike again. Ilayda forced herself to move, the world spinning around her as she ran down the passage, her hand clutching her side in a desperate attempt to stem the bleeding.

She could hear the serpent's heavy body crashing through the tunnel behind her, its rage palpable in the violent thrashing that sent shockwaves through the stone around her. The beast was far too fast, closing the distance between them with terrifying ease.

Ilayda's vision blurred, her strength rapidly draining as the blood loss took its toll. She knew she couldn't outrun the creature for long. In a desperate bid to escape, she spotted a dark, deep lake up ahead, its surface eerily still and black as ink. Without hesitation, she threw herself into the water, letting the cold, murky depths swallow her whole.

The water was shockingly cold, and as Ilayda sank beneath the surface, the world above was muffled, the sounds of the serpent's roars muted by the liquid that now enveloped her. She could feel the blood from her wound dispersing in the water, but she knew it was her only chance. The cold seemed to dull the pain slightly, but her movements were sluggish, her limbs heavy as she drifted deeper into the lake.

The Abyssal Serpent, enraged and confused, slithered over the lake's edge, its massive body writhing in frustration as it searched for her scent. But the water concealed her, hiding her presence from the serpent's keen senses. Ilayda remained still, her lungs burning as she struggled to hold her breath, praying that the creature wouldn't find her.

After what felt like an eternity, the serpent finally began to move away, its attention diverted elsewhere. Ilayda knew she didn't have much time; she needed to act quickly if she wanted to survive. Gathering the last of her strength, she swam silently toward the surface, careful not to make any sudden movements that might attract the serpent's attention.

Breaking the surface as quietly as she could, she saw the serpent's back was turned, its massive form coiled around a cluster of rocks on the far side of the cavern. Taking the opportunity, Ilayda gripped her spear tightly, the weapon feeling heavier than ever in her weakened state. She glanced up at the ceiling, where sharp crystal formations hung precariously above the serpent's head.

Summoning every ounce of her remaining strength, Ilayda took aim and hurled her spear with all her might. The spear flew true, striking one of the largest crystal formations directly at its base. The impact caused a chain reaction, the crystals shuddering before breaking loose and plummeting toward the ground below.

The serpent turned just in time to see the massive crystals descending upon it, but it was too late. The sharp, jagged stones crashed down onto the beast, impaling it and pinning its massive body to the cavern floor. The serpent let out a final, agonized roar before collapsing, its body convulsing one last time before going still.

Ilayda dragged herself out of the lake, each movement sending fresh waves of pain through her body. She stumbled across the cavern, her vision narrowing as darkness encroached on the edges of her sight. With the last of her strength, she reached the fallen serpent, her hand trembling as she gripped the hilt of her spare dagger. She climbed onto the creature's head, and with a final, determined thrust, she drove the blade into the serpent's eye, repeating the motion until the system acknowledged her victory.

Ilayda's body slumped against the dead serpent, her strength completely spent. Her vision was blurry, her limbs cold and unresponsive. She glanced at the system notifications, barely processing the rewards she had just earned. All she felt was an overwhelming exhaustion, a deep, bone-chilling cold that seemed to seep into her very soul. She knew she was dying.

As her vision faded, the serpent's body began to glow with a soft, golden light, and the Blue Peach of Verity materialized before her, its strange, glowing form hovering just within reach. Ilayda felt a strong, inexplicable urge to eat the fruit, as if something deep within her was compelling her to do so.

With trembling hands, she reached out and grasped the peach, its smooth, cool surface comforting against her fingers. She brought it to her lips, taking a bite of the strange, otherworldly fruit. The taste was sweet and unlike anything she had ever experienced, filling her with a warmth that spread through her entire body.

As she finished the fruit, a soft ding echoed in her mind, and the cold that had gripped her began to recede, replaced by a warmth that enveloped her like a comforting embrace. Her vision dimmed further, and she felt herself slipping away, but instead of fear, there was a sense of peace.

Her world stopped, and light enveloped her completely. She felt her body shifting, changing in ways she couldn't comprehend. The pain was gone, replaced by a soothing, almost euphoric sensation that spread through every fiber of her being. The transformation had not only healed her but had given her powers she could scarcely imagine.

She looked down at the dead Abyssal Matriarch Serpent, the creature that had nearly killed her, and felt a sense of closure. She had faced death and emerged reborn, stronger than ever. With a newfound resolve, Ilayda stood, her new abilities at her command, and began her journey to the next floor, ready to face whatever challenges the Tutorial Tower had in store for her.

"How am I going to tell the girls that I turned into a sexy half fish." Then thinking about something far more troubling, she paused, eyes wide in worry. "What if Phay doesn't like fish girls?!"
