Chapter 18 - CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Audrey's breath hitched, and she felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes. "Please, give us a little more time. We're working on resolving the issue," she pleaded, but the line went dead before she could finish.

As she sat there, staring at the phone in disbelief, it rang again. Another investor, with the same message. One by one, they called, withdrawing their support, each call chipping away at her confidence. By the time the last call ended, Audrey was trembling, her hands cold and clammy.

The fear and sadness were almost too much to bear. She felt tears sliding down her cheeks, but she quickly wiped them away. "Was I going to lose the company? How would Godmother see me if I failed?" she thought, her mind racing with anxiety.

Audrey took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. She couldn't afford to fall apart now. The company needed her to be strong. Her godmother had believed in her, had trusted her with this enormous responsibility. She couldn't let her down.

"I will never lose it. I will fight for this company," Audrey mumbled to herself, the words a lifeline she clung to desperately. She wiped her tears, straightened her shoulders, and stood up, determination hardening her resolve.

She walked over to the window and looked out at the city below. Somewhere out there was the thief who had plunged her company into chaos. She vowed to find them, to bring them to justice, and to restore the company's stability.

Her secretary returned, breathless from running. "The control room has footage of the accountant's last time in office, They're sending it over now," she reported.

"Good. We need to scrutinize every second of that footage," Audrey replied, her voice firm. "We will find out where is he is now."

The secretary nodded and left to relay the instructions. Audrey sat back down, her mind racing with plans and contingencies. She would review the footage herself, contact the police, and work with the security team to ensure they missed nothing.

As she waited for the footage, she made calls to reassure the remaining investors, promising swift action and transparency. Her heart ached with the fear of losing everything, but she masked it with a facade of calm and control. She knew that showing weakness now would only hasten the company's downfall.

Minutes later, her secretary brought in a laptop with the footage queued up. Audrey watched intently, looking for any clue, any mistake the thief might have made. She would not rest until she found the answers.

Hours passed as she scrutinized the video, her eyes burning from the strain. But finally, she saw something—a small detail, a fleeting moment that seemed out of place. She paused the video and leaned closer, her heart pounding with renewed hope. This was it. This was the break she needed.

With a determined look, Audrey picked up the phone to call the police again. She would fight for her company, for her godmother's legacy, and for herself. She would not let the bad guys win.

As Audrey pored over the footage, something caught her eye—a glimpse of an airline ticket in Mr. Batman's briefcase. The accountant who had stolen from her company was planning to flee. He'd been planning it for a long time. Her pulse quickened as she grabbed her phone and called the police, sending them the footage immediately. The authorities, now alerted, rushed to the airport to intercept him.

Meanwhile, Audrey paced anxiously in her office, waiting for news. The seconds dragged into agonizing minutes. She walked out to take a break and overheard her secretary talking on the phone.

"They're coming for you. Run now. I've done my part; make sure to give me my share," the secretary whispered urgently.

Audrey's heart stopped. Betrayal and fear clashed inside her, but she quickly turned it into action. She lunged toward her secretary, snatching the phone from her hand. She placed the receiver to her ear and heard Mr. Batman's voice.

"It's me, Miss Audrey. Get back here now!" she shouted, her voice trembling with rage and desperation. But the line went dead. The secretary's eyes widened in shock and fear.

Without hesitation, Audrey called the police again. "Arrest my secretary. She's an accomplice!" she commanded, her voice shaking but resolute.

As the police moved to apprehend Mr. Batman, he tried to run but was swiftly caught. During the interrogation, he revealed that the stolen money had been placed in a fixed account that couldn't be accessed for six months. Audrey's heart sank. What was she going to do now? How would her company survive the next six months? She needed help, and she needed it desperately.

Miles away, Miguel was scrolling through his phone when he came across the news about Audrey's company. He had always admired her tenacity and felt a strong urge to help. Determined, he reached out to Rosaline to get Audrey's number.

Audrey sat in her office, her head in her hands, the weight of the world on her shoulders. The phone rang, jarring her from her thoughts. The number was unfamiliar, and she hesitated, but something told her to answer.

"Hello?" she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Hello, Audrey," a calm, confident voice replied. I want to buy half of the shares in your company."

Audrey's heart leapt. "Are you serious? Thank you very much sir" she asked, her voice filled with a mix of hope and disbelief.

"I'll be there tomorrow," Miguel said.

Audrey ended the call and sat back, her mind racing with new possibilities. With the new investment, the company wouldn't go bankrupt. They had a fighting chance. She called a meeting with the board members to inform them of the new development. Their faces, which had been grim and worried, brightened at the news.
