Chapter 23 - CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Miguel trudged through the front door of his apartment, dropping his keys onto the counter with a clatter. He couldn't shake the feeling of emptiness that had settled in his chest since his confession to Audrey. It had been a week since her blunt rejection, but the pain still lingered.

As he made his way to the kitchen to grab a beer, he caught a glimpse of himself in the kitchen counter . His eyes looked sunken, his skin pale. He hadn't been taking care of himself, and it showed. He was tired of everything, including living.

Miguel thought back to the way things used to be when he had not met Audrey. He had been happy and fulfilled or so he thought. Not until he saw her for the first time, walking majestically while words of knowledge spat out of those sexy lips of hers. He didn't even realize he had been drooling until she finished her presentation, his hands moving on their own accord to cheer her up. He was the only one happy at their little closure. He had assumed she would be considerate about his emotions and would have given a chance, not to chase him out of her Life and also see him as a perverted person who only helps her for a sexual exchange.

He popped the cap off his beer and took a long swig, feeling the cool liquid slide down his throat. But even the familiar comfort of alcohol couldn't ease the ache in his heart.

As he wandered aimlessly around his apartment, Miguel's mind kept drifting back to Audrey. He wondered what she was doing, if she was okay, if she had had a single thought about him since their abrupt departure.

The sound of his phone buzzing broke the spell. He hesitated for a moment before picking it up, hoping against hope that it might be Audrey. But it was just a text from Betty, asking him to please meet up for lunch the next day.

Miguel sighed and tossed the phone onto the couch. He wasn't really in the mood for socializing, neither is he in the mood to encourage Betty's feelings but maybe it would be good to get out of the house and to somewhere apart from the office. Grabbing his phone, he typed 'ok' and sent it before continuing drinking himself to stupor.

As Miguel staggered across to his room, his mind started picturing images of Audrey, being in the same room as him. He was drunk! And he does not care as that has been the only way he could be with Audrey again. Whenever he gets drunk, he fantasies about her doing different things together with him, he might not be with the real Audrey, he is a little bit contented with her.

"My love, I have really missed you" Miguel whispered as he held his bed table with the thought of him holding Audrey, he could feel his Audrey hot breath against his own as he slowly leaned in to kiss her lips. Gazing softly at her, he watched her close her eyes before leaning more closely and closing his eyes before losing consciousness.

Miguel woke up with a throbbing headache, as his alarm screeched loudly, releasing loud bangs on his head. Angrily, he grabbed the alarm clock and threw it across the wall, smashing it to pieces. He was pissed that it had woken him up from his dream. He had been married to Audrey and was told to kiss his bride when the alarm went on, thereby stopping him from kissing her. Memories of last night swiftly rushed back in making him groan in pain. He is aware of the danger his actions could cause him and how he is slowly losing his sense of reasoning but he could not careless as that's the only way he could have her.

Picking up his phone, the light glowed brightly directly from it to his eyes forcing him to take his eyes away in a quick reflex. Glancing at the wall clock, he frantically flew up as he realized he had slept in. He could already imagine his dad's face as he would be scowling while waiting anxiously for him, so as to nag for sleeping in and preaching to him the "do and don't" for the hundredth time that month but he doesn't care as he is used to it. Moving to the kitchen, he made himself a hangover soup, a now morning occurrence as he is always getting drunk at night. Gulping it down, Miguel rushed to the bathroom, he hurriedly dressed up and went to work

Miguel arrived at the restaurant, spotting Betty already seated at a table. She waved him over, flashing a bright smile which enhanced her beauty. .

"Hey, Miguel! Thanks for meeting me," she said, as he sat down across from her.

"No problem, Betty. What's up?" Miguel asked, signaling the waiter for a coffee.

Betty launched into a story about her latest drama, and things she had found interesting while Miguel found himself zoning out, his mind still on Audrey. But when Betty mentioned something about being excited for their upcoming engagement, he snapped his head up, shocked as he looked at her. He has barely accepted her as his betrothed, they want him to have an engagement party with Betty.

"Engagement party? Betty, what are you talking about?" Miguel spat rudely, not caring about her feelings.

Betty beamed, she could feel the coldness In his voice but brushed it off. She thought he was probably angry that she told him late with zero to no chance to prepare, she had thought.

"I was thinking we could have a small gathering at my place, just close friends, family and important workers of ours including your business partners. I've already sent out the invitations which would have gotten to them by now."

Miguel's mind raced. He had never agreed to marry Betty, let alone have an engagement party. He felt like he was trapped in a nightmare.
