The morning had been overwhelming, and Alex was still trying to process everything. His transformation, the visions, the orb, and the cryptic warnings from Jack—it all swirled around in his mind like an untamable storm. One thing, however, was clear: his life was no longer ordinary.
There was no escaping it. His family needed to know.
But when Alex opened his mouth to speak, it wasn't just because he felt like he had no choice. No, there was another reason too—something a bit ridiculous, but true. The kind of hero he'd always imagined himself to be—someone who would rise above the ordinary—had always been a figure of his imagination. And now, standing before his family, he couldn't help but think maybe they were secretly like those cool characters in anime—powerful beings hiding in plain sight, just waiting for the right moment to reveal themselves.
Of course, that wasn't the case. But a small part of him had hoped.
Sitting in the living room, Alex nervously explained everything that had happened since his disappearance. His family listened intently as he detailed the transformation: the mysterious orb, the glowing light, his unconsciousness this time more detailed, and the strange figure named Jack who spoke of guardians and sacred beasts. He even made sure to mention that the magical energy inside him now was something special—something that wasn't just a regular, boring power. No, it was unique.
"I know this sounds crazy," Alex began, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible, "but after I fell into the fountain, something inside me... changed. I—I don't know how to explain it. But there's this power now. And it's mine." He paused, watching their faces for any sign of disbelief, but he was determined to keep going. "And there's a reason I'm telling you all of this. I think... I think I need your help to understand it."
David blinked. "You're saying this energy is inside you now?"
Alex nodded, his tone steady but with that familiar glint of uncertainty in his eyes. "Yeah. I'm... different. But I'm not sure what it all means. The guy—Jack—he said I'm connected to something bigger. But I didn't ask for this, you know?"
Olivia sat forward, concern etched in every line of her face. "Alex, this is... a lot to process. Are you sure you're feeling alright? I mean, this sounds like something out of a fantasy novel. You really believe this?"
"I know it sounds insane," Alex admitted, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. "But it happened. I'm not making this up. You've seen me, I've been different. I—I'm not the same kid who disappeared for three months. And I think it's important that you know what's happening."
Sarah, who had been quiet until now, furrowed her brow. "So you've got powers now?" She looked at him, an odd mixture of disbelief and curiosity in her eyes. "Like, actual powers? Are you going to start, I don't know, flying around or something?"
Alex gave a half-hearted laugh. "I'm not exactly sure what I can do yet. Maybe I'll just figure it out with time?"
David shook his head, still processing everything. "This sounds like something from a movie. Are you sure you didn't hit your head harder than you thought when you fell?"
Alex was about to respond when he remembered the one thing Jack had said—none of his family had the same energy he did. That meant they weren't connected to whatever force had chosen him. His parents weren't superheroes, at least not in the way he'd hoped. His expectations of a hidden family legacy quickly crumbled.
"Yeah, I... I guess it's just me," Alex said, his voice trailing off as the realization sank in. "You're not secretly magical or anything, right?"
Olivia gave him a confused look. "What do you mean, secretly magical?"
"I thought maybe you were hiding it, or maybe you just lost it. Like, it's something you're not supposed to talk about?" Alex stammered, then quickly cleared his throat, adding, "You know, like those anime families who seem normal, but they've got powers and—never mind."
David raised an eyebrow. "No, Alex. We're not magical. We're just your parents."
"Sorry," Alex muttered, feeling a little embarrassed. "I thought... well, never mind. But I still need to figure this out. I think I'm supposed to be some kind of... hero, you know?"
Olivia and David exchanged a look before turning back to him.
"I don't know about being a hero, Alex," Olivia said softly. "But what I do know is that you need to stay grounded. This is a lot, and we just want you to be safe. Whatever this energy is, we don't want it controlling your life. Please promise me you won't go looking for trouble."
Alex didn't answer right away. A part of him wanted to tell them the truth—that he had no intention of staying out of it. He wanted to be the one to protect people, to become something greater. He imagined himself facing some ancient threat, the kind of battle that would make him stronger. But that wasn't something he could say to his family, not now.
So instead, he just nodded and gave them a reassuring smile.
"Yeah, I'll... I'll stay out of it. For now," Alex said, trying to sound convincing.
But in the back of his mind, Alex knew that staying out of this wasn't an option. The hero's path wasn't going to wait for him to get comfortable. It was his to walk, no matter how ridiculous or dangerous it seemed. And no matter how much he tried to play it cool, deep down, he couldn't deny it: this was just the beginning.
