Chapter 44 - Under Pressure

January 2019, Craven Cottage

The atmosphere at Craven Cottage was tense and somber as the final whistle blew. Fulham had just suffered a 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in a heated London rivalry match. The home fans were silent, their disappointment palpable. The players trudged off the pitch, heads hung low, knowing that their performance had fallen short once again.

The commentator's voice filled the stadium as the fans began to make their way out.

"Another disappointing result for Fulham here at Craven Cottage. A 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, and the pressure continues to mount on manager Slavisa Jokanovic. Fulham now find themselves in 18th place in the Premier League, dangerously close to relegation."

In the post-match press conference, the room was filled with journalists eager to question the under-fire manager. Cameras flashed, and microphones were thrust forward as Jokanovic took his seat at the front of the room, his expression stern and weary.

"Slavisa, a tough loss today. What do you think went wrong out there?" a reporter from The Guardian asked.

Jokanovic sighed, running a hand through his hair. "We lacked creativity and failed to capitalize on our chances. Crystal Palace were the better team today, and we have to accept that. We need to improve in all areas if we want to stay in this league."

The next question came from an ESPN reporter, who didn't hesitate to get straight to the point. "Slavisa, given the current situation with Fulham in the relegation zone, do you feel the pressure of potentially being fired? The team is 18th in the league, and the fans are growing increasingly restless."

Jokanovic took a deep breath, his eyes meeting the reporter's. "As a manager, there's always pressure. This is part of the job, especially when results aren't going your way. I believe in this team and in our ability to turn things around. We have the talent, but we need to find consistency and resilience. My focus is on working with the players and preparing for the next match. That's all I can do."

The room buzzed with whispers and murmurs as Jokanovic's words hung in the air. The reality of their precarious position in the league was undeniable, and the pressure on the manager was immense.

After the press conference, Jokanovic made his way back to the locker room. The players were quiet, their spirits dampened by the loss. He addressed them with a mixture of sternness and encouragement.

"Listen up. Today was tough, but we can't let this defeat define us. We need to regroup and focus on the next game. Each of you has the ability to make a difference. We fight together, and we will get through this together."

As the team dispersed, Jokanovic couldn't help but reflect on the reporter's question. The threat of relegation loomed large, and his position as manager was indeed under scrutiny. But he was determined to fight for his team, for the club, and for his own future.

Meanwhile, in the stands, the fans discussed the match with a mix of frustration and hope. They knew the road ahead would be challenging, but their loyalty to Fulham remained steadfast.
