Chapter 10 - Welcome To London

August 2018

The summer heat lingered over London as Marcus stepped off the train and into the bustling city. His duffel bag was slung over his shoulder, with his headphones resting on his neck still blaring the hit song of last month"I Like It by Cardi B". He took a moment to take in the familiar sights and sounds of the capital. This time, however, the city felt different. Fulham FC had just secured promotion to the Premier League, and Marcus was now part of a team that was gearing up for one of the most competitive leagues in the world.

As he walked towards the exit, his phone buzzed with a notification. It was a message from his father, Ethan: "Good luck in London, champ! Can't wait to see you in action. Good luck with the meeting today. Proud of you!"

Marcus smiled, typing a quick response before hailing a taxi to take him to the club's headquarters. The drive through the city was a mix of nostalgia and excitement.

Upon arriving at the Fulham offices, the atmosphere was electric, with everyone buzzing about their recent promotion. He made his way to the office of Dan Thomas, the head of youth development at Fulham.

"Marcus, welcome," Dan said with a warm smile. "Thanks, Mr. Thomas. It's good to be here," Marcus replied, shaking his hand.

"Please, call me Dan," Bennett said with a smile. "Have a seat. We have a lot to discuss."

Marcus sat down, feeling a mix of anticipation and nerves. Dan's office was filled with memorabilia, photos of young players who had made it to the first team, and framed jerseys. It was a testament to the hard work and dedication that went into developing the club's talent.

Dan leaned forward, his expression serious but encouraging. "Marcus, you've come a long way since you first joined us two years ago. Your progress has been impressive, and now that we're in the Premier League, the stakes are higher than ever."

Marcus nodded, listening intently.

"However," Dan continued, "we're facing some financial constraints. After securing Aleksandar Mitrović and Jean Michaël Seri, our transfer budget is very tight. This means we need to rely more on our homegrown talent—players like you. Slaviša Jokanović would be paying close attention to you guys, so make sure you work hard."

Marcus felt a surge of determination. "I understand, Dan. I'm ready to step up and prove myself."

Dan smiled, clearly pleased with Marcus's response. "That's what I like to hear. We'll be counting on you and the other academy graduates to fill in the gaps and bring fresh energy to the squad.

Dan stood up, signaling the end of the meeting. "Welcome to the Premier League. Let's show everyone what Fulham is made of."

After leaving Dan's office, Marcus headed to the locker room of the Fulham U18s. He opened the locker with his name on it and took out his black Fulham training kit with the red Nike Mercurial boots his Dad had bought for him.

He walked onto the pitch where his teammates and the U18s coach, Coach Anderson were gathered around discussing. "Marcus! You're late!". Coach Anderson said noticing Marcus heading towards them. "Sorry Coach!" Marcus replied.

Coach Anderson gathered the team for a pep talk. "Listen up, everyone. We've made it this far through hard work and determination. The Premier League is a different beast, but I do not doubt in my mind that we can compete. We're not just here to make up the numbers; You're here to fight, to win, and to make a statement in the first team squad."

Marcus felt a wave of adrenaline as he joined the rest of the team in a rousing cheer. This was their moment, their chance to shine on the biggest stage in English football.
