Chapter 18 - Free For All (Part 1)

Logan stepped out of the portal, and the familiar city greeted him again. Only this time, it was even more ruined than he remembered. Buildings had been reduced to rubble, and the streets were filled with the remains of the zombies and the players.

Logan remained unfazed, even with blood, and gore splattered everywhere. After what he had seen in Gaunt's cave, this level of gore seemed almost tame.

It appears they changed the defense locations.

Not one to waste his time on the past, Logan activated the robe's skill and dashed through the streets, heading toward the area where the last trial would take place.

As he walked, he counted the players who had made it this far: thirty-two. The number was much higher than Logan had expected. He had thought maybe a dozen would make it, considering how things had been changed, but thirty-two players were surprising for him.

However, most of them were in terrible shape. Logan noticed several players with missing fingers and limbs. It was likely the undead had chewed them up, forcing the players to sacrifice their limbs to survive.

In other words, despite the higher number of survivors, they weren't any better than he had thought.

I guess this many people should be enough for the final round.

Logan knew the final round was a siege. They would have to attack the zombie's nest and kill the alpha zombie. He felt confident he could handle it, especially if he used the injured players as bait.

As harsh as it seemed, it was a survival of the fittest, so there was no point in being generous to anyone. Especially since they were all criminals.

[The final round will begin in twenty minutes. Please prepare yourselves.]

Since there was some time before the final round would start, Logan looked for Izna and Snake. Despite what happened between them, he was still grateful to them and wanted to see if they were alive or not.

As he walked through the city, no one seemed to mind him. However, Logan could sense their eyes stuck to his back. After the things he had done, no one should mess with him. But since they were criminals, there was no saying how they would react to him.

With that thought, Logan hid in an alley and turned invisible before continuing ahead. After a while, he spotted them. They were alive, but just barely.

Izna had a deep cut on her arm, and Snake was limping badly. From their injuries, it seemed they were the only ones who stuck to the roofs.

But why they didn't use medkits?

Medkits weren't all that expensive in the shop. One could get them for 200 gold. That's why it puzzled Logan why Izna and Snake hadn't used those yet.

Could it be that they don't know how to access the shop? I should help them.

Logan was about to leave his state when he remembered Izna had told him she didn't want to work with him anymore. For a moment, he wondered about disregarding her will, but then decided to keep his distance.

He watched them from the shadows for a moment, then disappeared before they could notice him. They had survived without him, they could survive again. For now, he had to focus on his survival more than anything else.

[Attention players. The next is about to begin.]

[Round name: Free-for-all]

[Objective: To survive till the end and kill as many players as possible.]

[Time: The round will continue until there are 10 players left alive.]

Logan's heart sank as he read the rules. The final round had changed. Instead of attacking the zombie nest, they now had to kill each other. But the even more ridiculous thing was that only ten survivors could live, the rest had to die.

Logan looked around at the other players. Most of them were hardened criminals. They didn't seem fazed by the news. He, on the other hand, was worried.

He had killed no human before. The idea of taking another person's life was horrifying to him. Despite the gears he had, he wasn't sure if he could kill someone.

Logan took a deep breath and tried to calm his racing heart. He needed a plan. Running blindly and hoping for the best wasn't a choice.

I can form a plan later. I should first get out of here.

He decided to hide and observe the others. Since the primary goal was to survive, he could do it without killing anyone.

Logan found a partially collapsed building and climbed inside. From his vantage point, he could see the other players moving around, preparing for the fight.

Some were forming alliances, while others were already looking for potential targets. Since he was hiding, no one would find him and he was planning to stay there till the end.

However, his plans got ruined when he heard a scream. Logan's blood ran cold. It was Izna's voice. For a moment, he thought about leaving them to their fate. But he couldn't. Not after they had saved from death first.

Without thinking, Logan sprinted towards the sound. As he rounded a corner, he saw Izna and Snake surrounded by a group of players. Izna was on the ground, a large gash on her leg, while Snake was desperately trying to fend off the attackers.

It seemed since they couldn't kill them before, while following the Helenskis, they wanted to kill Izna and Snake now.

"Get away from them!" Logan shouted, charging at the group.

The group turned around and saw Logan's hooded figure charging towards them with his kukris. But even though they saw him, they couldn't do anything to stop him. Logan was just too quick for them, or they were too slow.

He slashed one guy's leg, forcing him on his knees before using his shoulder to jump next to Snake and Izna.

"Here, use these," he said, throwing a couple of medkits their way.

"What are you doing—" Izna asked but was interrupted.

"Shh... we can talk about this later," Logan smiled, handing her a scrap gun and a new kukri to Snake. "Use them well."
