Chapter 7 - Into the Trials!

The aftermath of the monster attack still hung heavily in the air, casting a foreboding shadow across the banquet hall.

Students were abuzz with nervous energy and whispers, their conversations still teetering between fear and an electric excitement.

At the room's forefront stood the headmaster, his stern expression alone commanding a hush. Flanked by Professors Elara, Thalor, and Arlen, his aura of command enveloped the room, gradually soothing the anxious murmurs.

"Students," Zelbus' voice sliced through the remaining whispers, assertive and clear. "Tonight's events are but the onset of a series of challenges. Much remains to be discussed, but not within these walls. Accompany your professors, and all shall be unveiled in due course."

Raena gulped. "It was meant to happen then?"

A wave of uncertainty washed over the students, yet they aligned themselves behind their mentors with an air of obedience. The corridors of Thornwood Academy were a sight to behold, adorned with intricate carvings and glowing runes that seemed to dance with vitality.

Raena, despite the discomfort of a persistent twitch in her finger—a vestige of the dark magic she wrestled with—found herself captivated by the surrounding beauty.

Alongside her, Vladimir's concern was palpable. "Raena, are you certain you're all right?"

She mustered a smile, aiming to quell any further worry. "I'm fine, just a bit overwhelmed, that's all."

Their exchange did not go unnoticed. Ivana Zephyr, ever observant, cast a dismissive look in Raena's direction. "Overwhelmed? Perhaps you should reconsider your presence among us if you're rattled by such insignificant matters."

Lucius Solarion couldn't resist adding his sneer to the mix, "Indeed. To think you've even made it this far is astonishing in itself."

Raena felt her cheeks burn, not just from embarrassment but from a growing frustration. She had hoped for a moment of sympathy, not this relentless critique. "I just need a moment to gather my thoughts," she said quietly, a plea for understanding.

But the bullies weren't done. Ivana laughed a sharp sound that cut through the tension. "A moment? How luxurious. In the real world, we don't always have moments to spare."

Her voice dripped with condescension, and it was clear she relished Raena's discomfort.

Lucius chuckled, egging Ivana on. "Perhaps we should petition for a moment of silence every time our dear Raena feels a bit 'overwhelmed'?" He made air quotes, mocking her.

The comments were relentless, each one seemingly more pointed than the last. "Surely, the grand halls of this institution can accommodate the fragility of one so delicate," Ivana shot another barb, her eyes gleaming with malice.

Raena's heart sank. She had long grown accustomed to the background murmur of disdain, but today, it felt particularly unbearable. All she wanted was a reprieve from the constant scrutiny and judgment.

Seeing her distress, Vladimir hissed with a glance toward the tormentors, who couldn't seem to hold back their unnecessary critiques of the beleaguered princess. But before the situation could escalate further—a welcome interruption.

Jaime Pyrus's mocking tone, "Truly pathetic," was briskly silenced by his twin, Jaun. "Enough, Jaime. There's no need for such cruelty." With a sharp motion, Jaun turned his back to the crowd, and surprisingly, the others followed his lead, albeit with obvious annoyance.

Shocked, the group of bullies exchanged glances of disbelief. Through their stunned expressions, it was clear they hadn't expected to be called out, especially not by one of their own. Raena, though still reeling from their words, found a sliver of solace in the unexpected defense.

The group's journey continued in strained silence, their path winding through the academy's labyrinthine hallways until they arrived at a peculiar, enclosed chamber. The only light source was a high window, focusing a single beam on the floor where a detailed thorn emblem was inscribed into the stone.

The room was charged with an ancient energy, pregnant with anticipation.

Stepping forward, the Headmaster's voice reverberated, penetrating the quiet. "This chamber, students, is where you will affirm your commitment. The thorn symbolizes the core of our academy's strength. Before we delve into the procedure, allow me to elucidate our ranking system!"

"Ranking system?" Raena gasped unknowingly.

Curiosity flickered across the students' faces, their eagerness palpable as Zelbus elaborated, "Your standings will be gauged through a succession of trials scrutinizing your combat efficacy, scholarly prowess, and magical aptitude. These challenges will test your capacities to their furthest extents. Only the formidable and resilient shall ascend, as your scores will be updated at every end of the challenges."

Murmurs crept back into the room as the students mulled over this revelation. Raena could feel her heart racing, caught in a tumult of dread and anticipation. The barbs traded earlier with her peers lingered, adding to the moment's weight.

Ivana seized the opportunity for one last jab, leaning closer with a malicious grin. "I'd be surprised if you withstand the initial trial."

Vladimir's protective stance and stern glare offered silent support to Raena, though she couldn't shake off the nagging feeling of inadequacy. She recognized the road ahead was fraught with trials, from the academy and within herself.

"You will be ranked according to these statuses: (A) Ascendants, (B) Barons, (C) Crusaders, (D) Dukes, (E) Elites, and (F) Footmen." The headmaster continued delineating the ranking system's workings as they assembled in this room of ancient power and secrets. "The inaugural challenge will gauge your inherent magical strength and serve as a starting point for your power level!"

Everyone was amused with the ranking system; some were nervous, but most were excited to climb the ranks and prove themselves!

Professor Elara, dressed in white with golden patterns, gave them instructions. "Your task is to channel your energy into the thorn, assessing your raw potential. Remember, true might lies not in power alone but in mastery, control, and resilience."

The students absorbed every word, their resolve hardening. Raena, amidst her doubts, felt a resolve kindling within her. Unsure of her current capabilities, she nonetheless vowed to exert her utmost.

Headmaster Zelbus' piercing gaze surveyed the assembly, his eyes reflective of a discerning wisdom. "Within each of you slumbers the potential for greatness. These trials are structured not merely for ranking but for your evolution. Embrace the ensuing challenges, and you shall emerge fortified."

As his words settled, a profound realization dawned upon the students, marking this a test of skill and a pivotal journey toward self-discovery and empowerment.

Raena's spirit rallied. She could not explain what she was feeling... Perhaps a sense of improvement?

She then remembered her promises to her family, especially for the betterment of the Shadowlands. Raena could only gulp and feel frightened of the hope she holds for the people back home. Then, she closed her eyes...

"This is it, Raena." She whispered, opening her eyes with a determined look on her face.

She then exchanged a meaningful glance with Vladimir, his nod imbuing her confidently. She wasn't alone.

With those words resonating in their minds, the students steeled themselves for the trials ahead. Raena took a deep breath, ready to face whatever came next. She knew that the road ahead would be difficult, but she was determined to rise to the challenge and prove her worth.
