Christopher looks at Angelo's bed with a strong concentration. The feeling of having a roommate is weird to him because he has always been alone, he's never had a roommate because who would want to share a room with an offspring of two Judases?
Chris might be one of the most skilled demon hunters around but that doesn't change the fact that his parents betrayed them and broke the pact that was made with God.
The number one rule of the Nephilim is to never kill a human but to protect them from harm. His parents, for whatever reason decided to kill humans and they got executed for it.
Chris was forced to stand front row to watch as his parents got engulfed by flames. He was not to blink or look away. There had never been a nephilim who went against the rules in California and when nephilims are caught breaking the most important rule, they're used as an example to show other nephilims what would happen to them if they ever killed a human.
Chris watched as their parents shook and wiggled in the flames. He could hear their screams, he could hear her mother screaming his name apologizing for the betrayal. He remembered crying.
Then they were no more, they had turned completely to ashes.
Marissa and Anthony Benson's screams still haunt Christopher's dreams. He can hear his mother screaming his name in an echo. He can still picture his parents suffering under the flames.
"They're damned to hell." Said Daniel Jackson, the elder nephilim who makes sure there's order in the headquarters and Mr. Cornell's older brother. That man is scary and intimidating, Chris had always been scared of him as a kid but as he grew older he refused to be intimidated by anyone, not a demon, nor nephilim can intimidate him.
Yes, Wendy and JJ were the only ones who attempted to be his friend when they were thirteen but Chris would not have cared to be friendless, he doesn't mind being alone.
He got so used to the fact of not having a roommate like everyone else in the headquarters. At least there was peace and quiet and there was no one to disturb him and his peace.
Until Angelo.
He thinks the reason why Angelo was put here was because he didn't know of Chris' parents and what they had done but he is a hundred per cent sure that Anglo's going to find out sooner or later and just like everyone else, Angelo's going to make a run for his life. Chris won't care, he is used to being alone after all.
The tall golden-haired boy scoffs and he looks away from Angelo's bed. He takes off his clothes and what he has on is a towel wrapped around his waist, he makes his way to the showers.
He does receive respect as one of the best demon hunters around but there's a limit to that respect when you're related to the people who broke the number one rule. It's not just a rule but a covenant, and not just any covenant, a covenant made with the almighty.
There aren't a lot of judgmental people, nephilims are pretty liberal, well the younger generation is. But when it comes to something as atrocious as breaking a covenant with God it will receive judgmental eyes from the most less judgmental person.
Mahway drew blood and made a covenant with his blood so that his children's, children's children would not break that covenant. A gigantic creature who saw the error of his ways and wanted to make a change. It is a slap on the face to go back to being what Mahway once hated.
Before Chris can get into the shower he stops on his track when he hears something melodious coming from the bathroom. It's a singing voice, a voice so full of power and wonder, so strong and so soothing.
A lot of people who shower do sing but their singing is awful and deafening the person singing in the shower has the most beautiful voice he has ever heard. It's like hearing angels sing.
Angels
Angelo?
Christopher steps into the bathroom and it is indeed him, the human-turned-angel singing as he scrubs himself with soap and sponge.
Christopher looks him up and down admiring his voice and he flushes when he catches himself admiring his body too. He knows for a fact Angelo did not work for this body.
His legs are a bit muscular and so are his arms. The halo is still working a way through his body because he wasn't this muscular the first time Chris saw him.
Angelo is beautiful no doubt. Chris knows you'd have to be blind not to see it.
He tries not to look at Angelo because everything about him screams beauty, from his curly hair to his light brown skin to his wide lips, round face and that tiny mole on his left cheek.
Angelo is beautiful. But Chris does not have time for dating, be it boys or girls all he wants to do is fight demons.
Chris quickly looks away and he takes off his towel and aims toward the shower.
As soon as he's at Angelo's side. Angelo quickly shuts up when he sees who's close to him.
Holy shit!
Angelo tries hard not to react he tries hard not to panic or rise to any occasion. Why does Chris have to shower next to him, why does Chris have to shower at all? This is torture, wild torture he cannot believe what he's seeing. Looking at Chris is like looking at a porno magazine, a gay porno magazine.
He's taller than Angelo yes, more muscular and he watches as the water moves down his abs. Angelo wants to look away but he doesn't. He can't, looking at Chris is like looking at a well-crafted sculptor come to life.
His eyes go lower and he knows he's not supposed to do that because that would be inappropriate, his butt is perfect and round unlike his that's small and he moves down to the private area and… he is packed.
Angelo squeals, internally of course.
"Enjoying the show?" Chris asks, he doesn't even glance at Angelo's way his eyes are closed as he lets the water fall on him.
"I— uh." Angelo swallows and he looks away then back at Chris. "Huh?"
"I know you're staring at me," he says and Angelo's heart begins to race. He doesn't want anyone here to know about him, these people are religious and they will kick him out if they find out what he is. He can't take that risk, he shouldn't have been staring but at the same time, he thought it was safe to stare because Chris' eyes were closed shut.
How does he know he was staring, is it some kind of superpower that Chris has? Do all nephilims have that kind of power, seeing with their eyes closed?
"See anything you wish you had?"
Chris' eyes are opened now and he's smiling at him. Chris barely smiles but this is not a friendly smile, it's a condescending one.
Still, Angelo internally lets out a sigh of relief because Chris doesn't think Angelo's checking him out because he's sexually attracted to him but because he thinks Angelo's jealous of his physique. Angelo can either call him out for his pride and lack of humility or go along with toxic masculine heterosexual bullshit.
"Your arms…" he says. "They're strong how do I get mine to be like yours?"
"You're not up for it."
Angelo gives him a look. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Are you ready to have a workout routine?"
Is he?
"Ye— yeah I am." Angelo nods, he doesn't know if he's ready to start a workout routine or if he just wants to throw Chris off his scent. He's never really liked the idea of working out he doesn't see the point of it, but now he sees it is quite essential if he wants to look scary enough for the demons and the halo thief to cower.
That's a very funny reason for one to look muscular. But he also doesn't see the point in it, the whole point of having abs and muscles is to be fit but Angelo is beginning to think Chris is only fit because he wants to look hot. That can't be it, Chris doesn't look like that kind of person.
"I know they told you." He says.
Angelo is about to ask what he's talking about but then there's no need, he knows what Chris is talking about. "I'm sure you don't want to be my roommate anymore," he says looking away, a small smile on his face. The smile is supposed to be fake, the smile is supposed to tell Angelo that he doesn't care, but the smile isn't convincing not to mention he's looking away because he knows his smile won't be that convincing.
He can't believe people don't want to be his roommate just because of what his parents did. It's not like he's the one who told his parents to kill humans. It's not like he's going to kill humans himself.
"I don't judge people based on their background or their parents' behaviour I judge people based on their character, their personality," Angelo says and Chris faces him with a look Angelo never thought he'd ever see on his face, a look of relief. The look disappears from his face when he realizes he has it on.
"Besides you can't get rid of me that easily." Angelo holds a smile. And Chris does the same.
"You don't look like the kind of person who gives up easily Angie."
Angie?
Angelo's about to tell him not to ever call him that but he repels. Chris won't listen anyway and he's going to keep calling him that.
"Nope, you're stuck with me."
"Unfortunately."
Angelo excitedly jumps into the backseat of JJ's car with Wendy up front. He's going shopping for new clothes, another thing he loves other than music, shopping. His signature outfit is a denim jacket, he loves denim and sneakers. He's not going to be buying multiple denim outfits that would be basic. He has to look classy.
"You ready Angelo?" Asks Wendy.
"Mhmm." He says nodding his head like a little kid that's being taken to an ice cream shop for his favourite, chocolate ice cream.
The headquarters were gracious enough to lend him the money to get him new clothes and shoes. He's so grateful. He knows it's just been a night and a day but he's beginning to see these people as family. Especially Wendy, JJ and Jacks. Even the lunch ladies are nice and Chris is going to end up loving him, he's sure of that. Not in a romantic way though. Angelo has gathered that Chris is straight for sure. He's not going to be falling for a straight guy, not again.
"Who's ready for some hip hop?" JJ asks excitedly.
"Whoop whoop!" Wendy sings.
JJ plays Doin It by LL Cool J Which Angelo thinks is perfect for drives on the streets of L.A.
JJ starts the car.
"Wait!" someone yells opening the door and it's Chris dressed in a white shirt and blue jeans. The others are also dressed casually. They only dress in their black vigilante attire at night when they're fighting demons, the nighttime is when demons appear to torment humans. They love the darkness.
Wendy is dressed in a purple dress and flats, while JJ is dressed in a brown shirt, a black leather jacket and jeans.
"Look who decided to join us." Says JJ.
"Please let's not make it a whole thing."
"Okay, hip hop hater." Wendy laughs and Chris is about to defend himself but he smiles and turns to Angelo who's shaking his head. He still can't believe there is a human in this world that hates hip-hop. He can't believe there are humans in this world that hate any genre of music. Angelo's too much of a music fan to hate any genre, he loves them all, even country. Dolly Parton is a queen.
JJ drives his jeep to the mall while they sing to hip hop and RNB.
Angelo is so invested in singing with Wendy and JJ that he doesn't notice Chris staring at him with a smile on his face. He's never seen anyone this passionate about music since his mom. He remembers that his mom was always singing him to sleep, he had forgotten his mother's melodious voice until he heard Angelo sing in the showers. His voice made him remember his mom.
He can't believe that someone as soulful as his mom would be capable of murdering humans. And it's not like the humans were bad people.
They were devout Christians and they confessed to doing so and had said they wanted power over the humans. Chris may have forgotten the good qualities of his parents but he remembers the questioning, the confession and the execution of his parents. Those are the only memories he has of his parents.
Until Angelo who reminds him of his mom.
They're at the mall which is packed by people who only want to hang out or buy stuff.
"Look at all the cute girls. Ain't they cute Hernandez?" Says JJ looking around at the beautiful girls in their crop tops.
"Uh.. yeah." Angelo looks away.
JJ licks his lips as he throws a nod at three female friends who are smiling at both him and Chris.
Chris doesn't pay them any attention. He just finds it odd that Angelo wasn't indulging JJ why didn't he say they were cute in an exciting way? He's not shy, Angelo's not a shy person.
There has to be a reason but Chris isn't going to think too much about it.
They get into a store and behind the counter is a tall Asian woman insulting someone in Japanese on her phone. The four of them stand in front of the counter waiting for her to finish insulting whoever it is. Wendy, Chris and JJ seem to understand what she's saying and by the looks on Wendy and JJ's faces, it must be something brutal.
But wait a minute…
Angelo can understand what she's saying. Does he understand what she's saying or does he think he understands what she's saying?
"Bastard." She spits in Japanese and ends the phone call. Then smiles at the people in front of her. "Hey guys long time no see," she says enthusiastically.
"Hey, Kira," they say in unison.
"Hold up did you just call whoever you were talking to a bastard?" Angelo asks and Kira looks at Wendy, JJ and Chris then back at Angelo.
"Yes, he's my landlord I told the idiot I would pay him his rent next week and he keeps agreeing to that but keeps forgetting he agreed to it. I know I should be patient when it comes to the elderly but I'm not a patient person."
He was right, he did understand what he was saying.
"Kid, are you alright?" Kira asks Angelo. "You look like you've seen a ghost." she chuckles.
"You didn't know Japanese until now did you?" Chris asks Angelo and Angelo shakes his head.
Chris nods his head. "That's part of being an angel Angie. Angels can understand any language."
Angelo thinks that's amazing but he's wondering if it's a good idea to be talking about him being an angel in front of this lady who's looking at him with wide eyes.
"He's the one with the halo in his chest?" she asks.
"Yes," Wendy says in her cheery-pitched voice. "Angelo meet Kira Yamamoto, Kira Angelo Hernandez."
"Whoa! A human turned angel. Nice to meet you."
Angelo's about to ask how she knows about him and the supernatural and he spots a Katana in a glass box the blade glows a bright white, that's a celestial weapon, and Kira's a Nephilim.
He forgot there are nephilims outside the headquarters living their lives.
"Nice to meet you too," says Angelo.
"So what brings you here?"
"We're here to get loads of clothes for my boy here." JJ slaps Angelo on the back. "He can't be wearing these stinky clothes forever," he says gesturing to the clothes he's been wearing since yesterday, the ones he stole. And yes he does stink. It's probably because he jogged with the clothes."
"Ah, dress up! Well, come on Angelo. Let Kira dress you up!" Kira sings. She jumps over the counter and grabs Angelo by the arms disappearing in the rack of clothes.
