Chapter 7 - Chapter 07

Page and Carter then made their way towards a place that seemed like nothing special, just a rocky area. It was a large, rocky area overgrown with plants and other things.

"We are here. This is the place," Page said proudly.

"This is just a dead end. All we've done is make it to the center of where we can venture safely. Everyone knows this place; we come here all the time, after all," Carter said.

"But why do we come here? And what is so special about this place that it drove me here? This must be where our lord is located. We are their people, so of course, we would know where they are located," Page explained to him.

Page puffed out her chest at the claim she had just made so suddenly.

"You are the only one too caught up in the myth and legend that we were somehow chosen to live here. We weren't picked by the guardian; there probably isn't even one for the South to begin with," Carter tried to explain to her.

That was one of the founding myths and legends of their village: that they were considered the chosen people of the Southern Guardian. They believed this was why they could live in peace in the otherwise uninhabitable South. It was not well known, and Carter only knew because he had bothered to look it up one day in the village's version of a library, which was just a few shelves in the village leader's house.

"I do not think that's possible. We must have been something to our lord; my parents told me that must be the case," Page said.

"I know your parents were the only outsiders to find our village. They were shockingly weak for some reason, but you turned out just fine. Though... how do you even know your parents? They died long before my mom even found you," Carter said.

Page laughed as she smirked and pulled out a book she had been carrying.

"I was apparently found with this book, and it had all sorts of things written down by my parents," Page told him.

"How do you know it is from your parents? You couldn't possibly recall them since they died when you were just a baby," Carter asked, eyeing her with suspicion.

Page pointed to where her name was written by the people claiming to be the authors. They mentioned her name, along with details that, in her mind, proved these were her dead parents' words and findings.

"That is exactly why I think it's the work of our lord—that they left this for me to find him. And I will," Page said, slamming one hand to her chest and the other against the wall in just the right place to reveal an entrance leading deep inside.

"Huh!?" she said, looking confused, as she hadn't expected this to happen but played it off as though everything was working according to plan.

Carter pushed her into the entrance and banged the same place, hoping it would close the 'door' that had opened behind them. However, it did not. It remained fully open and visible for all to see. The plants and vines were gone, along with what had made the 'door' look like it was just part of the rocky wall.

Looking into the darkness, lit only by the light shining in from outside, Page could not see clearly. What she could make out, however, were two human like forms. While Page tried to walk forward, Carter fumbled around, looking for something to light up the room. He remembered reading about a room in the village's small selection of books where a switch would allow it to light up. Managing to find the switch, the place did not fully light up but brightened enough for them to see the room clearly.

The two human like figures that Page and Carter had made out in the dim light became clearer now. They were two mechas, one male and one female. One was sitting on a throne, while the other stood beside them. Both were covered in dust and thick cobwebs. Attempting to brush off the one on the throne, Page moved the female mecha's hand off the male mecha's shoulder, as well as the one located on her chest.

"My lord," Page asked.

Carter looked shocked. The male mecha sitting on the throne might actually be the mythical Southern Guardian, which was not supposed to exist. However, face to face with the figure, it was hard to think otherwise. There was no proof this mecha was indeed the Guardian, as common knowledge suggested none existed. Even in a village as isolated as theirs, this was understood. Yet Page seemed convinced this was the case. Carter knew it would be nearly impossible to change her mind once she decided on something.

Page might have managed to find the South Guardian that she had been looking for all this time. However, there was something that she had to account for, which she was not facing as she was looking at them face to face. She had no idea how to activate them as it was clear that he was offline along with the female mecha that stood by his side. They were both in a deactivated state and were from a village where they did not know how to activate or deactivate any kind of mecha let alone a human based one. Page just went about doing a number of things that she thought might work out. She even tried shaking the offline Guardian to try to wake them, not understanding that this was not how a mecha could be awakened. However, none of these efforts were proving to be that fruitful at all. She was then starting to think about how to awaken the one that she had been looking for the majority of her life she could remember as this was certain to be her ticket be being accepted as one of the villagers now.

"Carter, help me out here as you have said anything for a while now" Page states.

She looks around to see that he is not needed by her anymore as that strange he should have been right here with her after all
