Chapter 20 - Eavesdropping

Since August 23rd was a Monday, September 15th was also a Monday.

Today was actually Professor Deng Yong's surgery day, but neither Fang Ziye nor Lan Tianluo had the chance to go to the operating room. Fang Ziye was on duty, while Lan Tianluo was shadowing him.

As the hospital beds were nearly full, Yuan Weihong and Qin Geluo, after finishing their surgeries, rushed back to the ward to check on a patient who had just undergone a major operation. They wanted to reassess the patient's drainage volume.

Seeing that the patient's vital signs and condition were stable, the two returned to the office.

Qin Geluo turned and asked, "Brother Wei, I heard you received a very unique gift this Teachers' Day, and you even sealed it with wax?"

"Who's been whispering in your ear?" Yuan Weihong asked in return.

"So many students saw it in the training room!" Qin Geluo didn't mention that it was he who had ultimately confirmed this for Fang Ziye. His words were tinged with envy.

He also hoped that his own students would give him such a special gift someday.

As a teacher, when students make you proud, it gives you a unique sense of achievement, different from professional accomplishments.

The two entered the office as they talked. At that moment, Fang Ziye was still comparing his assigned patients' treatment plans with printed research papers.

After observing this, Qin Geluo sighed, "If only Xiaotao were as hardworking and ambitious as Ziye."

Qin Geluo had a professional master's student, Guo Yuntao, who was in his second year. However, he was currently rotating in general surgery, not in their department.

"Master, Brother Luo." Fang Ziye heard Qin Geluo's voice and turned around. Seeing them, he quickly stood up to greet them.

Lan Tianluo also politely greeted them as "Teacher Yuan" and "Teacher Qin."

"Ziye, have you confirmed the transfer details for this afternoon's patient?" Yuan Weihong asked Fang Ziye.

"Yes, Master. The vascular surgery department has already admitted the patient to a bed, and the emergency surgery informed consent form has been completed," Fang Ziye promptly replied.

When a patient is transferred out of a department, their original department needs to track their destination. If a patient is transferred out but ends up in a situation where no one is managing their care, it needs to be reported to the supervising physician in the original department. This prevents accidents from occurring if the patient can't return or has nowhere to go during the transition.

This is another form of follow-up.

Qin Geluo clicked his tongue in amazement: "To think you actually discovered a vascular surgery case in the orthopedic ward. Ziye, how many strokes of luck did you have to stumble upon this?"

Everyone in the department knew that Fang Ziye often conducted comprehensive full-body examinations for his patients, implementing meticulous management. He spared no effort in researching various literature and comparing different drug mechanisms, striving for perfection.

However, this behavior wasn't emulated by others because it wasn't time-efficient. With that time, it was considered better to spend more time in the training room.

Most master's students had their own learning methods and habits. Outsiders wouldn't criticize Fang Ziye's learning method as bad, even if they didn't adopt it themselves.

Fang Ziye's approach was like casting a wide net. Today, it happened to help the department avoid an accident, which was within expectations.

Fang Ziye smiled and said, "Brother Luo, it's just a blind cat catching a dead rat. It was just a coincidence."

Yuan Weihong then said, "Even for a blind cat to catch a dead rat, it at least needs to recognize that it's a rat and know it can be eaten. Ziye, you're quite practical and doing well."

"Are there any issues with the other patients admitted today?" he asked.

"Master, there shouldn't be any," Fang Ziye quickly shook his head.

How could every elective admission patient vetted by superiors have special circumstances? If that were the case, how could the department even function?

Fang Ziye also didn't dare to make absolute statements, because medicine is inherently an uncertain science.

Drawing conclusions without evidence is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

"Have you ordered dinner yet?"

"We're going out for a big meal. Order something for yourself, I'll reimburse you and Tianluo." Today happened to be the day after the department's surgery day, and Professor Deng Yong was treating everyone to dinner. However, Fang Ziye had to miss it due to his shift.

Yuan Weihong still cared for his student.

Fang Ziye's eyes lit up, and he nodded with a smile. As a student and subordinate, constantly refusing wasn't a good thing.

As Yuan Weihong and Qin Geluo walked out, Yuan Weihong instructed them to call if anything came up, then proactively ordered meals for the two.

Qin Geluo glanced at the price: "Brother Wei, you're really splurging."

"Men don't bleed monthly, so bleeding once in a while is fine. Are you jealous?" Yuan Weihong started to pick up the pace.

"I really am jealous." Qin Geluo didn't match the pace, instead honestly enduring a heavy blow.

Currently, Fang Ziye had published papers, focusing on quality over quantity. He had broken through two levels in the training room, and if he pushed a bit more, he might achieve what usually took a student one or two years to earn a chance at the study room through the training room.

Such a student was not only loved by Qin Geluo but also by Professor Deng Yong.

...

After the two superiors left, Lan Tianluo asked, "Brother Ye, just now Teacher Yuan and Teacher Qin were praising you. I guess your chances of getting into the doctoral program are probably secured."

Fang Ziye shook his head briefly: "Secured or not, no one can say for sure until the final step. But opportunities always favor those who are prepared."

"Don't repeat this outside, otherwise people might think I'm getting arrogant in the department," Fang Ziye cautioned Lan Tianluo.

Lan Tianluo was shadowing him, and although he was in general residency, if he spoke carelessly, others might think Fang Ziye didn't see Li Yuanpei as a competitor, which would be quite troublesome.

Lan Tianluo quickly nodded.

September 16th was a Tuesday, neither a surgery day nor an outpatient clinic day.

After Fang Ziye had sorted out all the department affairs, he naturally came to the training room again.

This time when Fang Ziye arrived at the training room and began practicing incisions, a large circle of people gathered around him. Not only were Lan Tianluo and the first and second-year master's juniors there, but even the doctoral senior, Sun Shaoqing, stood watching.

"Can this incision technique really make tofu look so good?" someone exclaimed.

"Of course. If Professor Deng Yong and Associate Professor Xie Jinyuan came to the training room, you'd be truly amazed by their incision skills. Three cuts, and they can precisely slice ten pages, nine pages, eight pages - not a page more, not a page less."

The others clicked their tongues in wonder.

Outside the training room.

As Shou Junai, a student of Associate Professor Chen Fang from Professor Dong Yaohui's trauma surgery group, walked towards the training room, he was surprised to see Li Yuanpei standing at the entrance without entering. He asked curiously, "Brother Pei, what are you doing here?"

"Taking a day off from intensive training," Li Yuanpei said, rubbing his uncomfortable nose.

Hearing the commotion of classmates inside, Shou Junai's eyes darted around, watching Li Yuanpei walk away: "Brother Pei, aren't you going in?"

"Not going in. Don't mention this inside," Li Yuanpei instructed in a low voice as he passed by Shou Junai.

With his back to Shou Junai, he shook his hand and left casually, as if he had never been there.
