Chapter 26 - Busy with Snacks

September 27th, a Friday.

By rights, this should have been Professor Deng Yong's surgery day. However, Fang Ziye didn't have a chance to enter the operating room today.

Sun Shaoqing, a senior who had already entered his third year of doctoral studies, was currently looking for a job and urgently needed Professor Deng Yong to guide him in preparation for the autumn recruitment in November. He hoped to gain experience in the recruitment battles at various teaching hospitals and seek a decent job.

Senior Sun Shaoqing was still short of the publication requirements for staying at the hospital. It was almost impossible for him to emerge from the training room successfully, so staying at the hospital was out of reach. Naturally, he had to look for other paths.

He had already published the required SCI paper for graduation, and his dissertation draft was completed. The remaining less than a year was the time for Senior Sun to strive for his future and find a good job.

Not everyone could stay at the hospital.

Unable to snag opportunities in the operating room, and having finished grinding through the medical orders for his post-operative patients in the ward, Fang Ziye could only slowly hone his skills in the training room.

The training room was not short of busy people.

Among those Fang Ziye was familiar with were Senior Wang Yuanqi and Senior Gu Yi, who had now advanced to the second year of their doctoral studies.

Among Professor Deng Yong's doctoral students, there were two professional doctorate students in their second year: Gu Yi and Wang Yuanqi. Senior Gu Yi had directly advanced from being Professor Deng Yong's master's student. As for Senior Wang Yuanqi, he had found his own doctoral position, though Fang Ziye was unclear about the specific process.

Those Fang Ziye was less familiar with included Liu Zhengjun, a third-year doctoral student from Professor Han Yuanxiao's group; Lu Zhefu, a newly arrived first-year doctoral student; and Dai Yinsheng and Fan Yantong, doctoral seniors from Professor Dong Yaohui's group.

The number of people in the training room in September was different from August.

Counting Luo Tingzhu, an eight-year program student, there were a total of nine doctoral students in trauma surgery.

All of them could be considered Fang Ziye's seniors.

While Fang Ziye was practicing quick electrocoagulation hemostasis in hemostasis surgery, Luo Tingzhu was discussing with Senior Dai Yinsheng from Professor Dong Yaohui's group about more advanced techniques and operations in debridement surgery...

Meanwhile, Lu Zhefu and Yan Zhiming, two professional doctorate seniors who had just joined the department in September, were slowly familiarizing themselves with the training room, now preparing step by step towards breaking through.

Although their previous universities also had training rooms, such facilities had little to do with undergraduate students. Moreover, each teaching hospital and specialty had different basic skills requirements for undergraduate students...

After practicing for a while and unable to substantially improve his hemostasis surgery, Fang Ziye couldn't help but curiously move towards the crowd. He stood on tiptoes to watch Senior Liu Zhengjun's current hemostasis surgery practice, quite surprised.

The practice materials for hemostasis surgery were actually quite simple, just sesame seeds and tofu.

Sesame seeds were sprinkled on a block of tofu. The most basic requirement was to use tweezers as an electrosurgical knife to quickly poke these sesame seeds into the tofu within a short time, simulating finding bleeding points and completing hemostasis.

This was the most entry-level practice.

The next level of hemostasis surgery required completing electrocoagulation hemostasis on more than twenty sesame seeds within one minute, with an error rate of no more than ten percent.

In other words, when performing hemostasis, you had to quickly electrocoagulate twenty times, with no more than two misses or pokes in blank spaces, and you couldn't fail to locate bleeding points accurately.

Fang Ziye's current hemostasis surgery passing requirement was forty times.

However, Senior Liu Zhengjun from Professor Han Yuanxiao's group was now practicing hemostasis surgery operations on sixty bleeding points within two minutes...

"Fifty-three. Missed two again." After finishing the operation, Liu Zhengjun sighed slightly, seemingly unsatisfied.

But in fact, everyone, including Luo Tingzhu, was extremely envious of Liu Zhengjun's current proficiency in hemostasis surgery. They looked amazed but didn't dare to openly praise him.

Everyone was of different ages. Liu Zhengjun was now in his third year of doctoral studies. The training room exit requirement he faced for hemostasis surgery, which was highly valued in trauma surgery, was to accurately complete simulated hemostasis operations on sixty bleeding points within two minutes. Only then could he be considered a professional talent worthy of Professor Deng Yong's attention.

Otherwise?

Well, then you could only join the other doctoral students in crossing the single-plank bridge with thousands of troops, each displaying their own abilities.

After finishing his operation, Liu Zhengjun smiled and said, "Everyone, disperse now. It's getting late. Go eat if you need to eat, start practicing if you need to practice. If you have any questions, feel free to come and ask anytime."

As a senior, Liu Zhengjun was polite to everyone, regardless of whether they had the same supervisor. After all, they were all graduate students from the same department, whether master's or doctoral. They would need to help each other in the future when they met.

This was a natural network, not for showing off in front of these people.

As Fang Ziye and others gradually dispersed, Luo Tingzhu raised her hand and asked, "Senior Liu, in the practice process of hemostasis surgery, should we focus more on finding the position or on the hemostasis operation?"

"First find the position. Only when you've found the correct position can you achieve precise hemostasis. This requires quick eyes and hands," Liu Zhengjun replied, his voice not low, unafraid of others overhearing.

"Otherwise, for some large destructive injuries, you might suddenly encounter seventy or eighty, or even over a hundred bleeding points at once. If you operate slowly step by step, the patient might have already replaced half of their blood volume..."

Knowing the theory of how to do it and being able to actually do it were two different things.

...

At 5:10 PM.

After failing the third level of hemostasis surgery again, Fang Ziye shook his head and decided to pack up his personal belongings. He planned to first go to the department, then check on his patients, and come back tomorrow.

Operating skills were a matter of gradual improvement; it was almost impossible to master them overnight.

However, what Fang Ziye didn't expect was that Li Yuanpei, carrying his backpack, had just arrived at the training room.

Seeing Fang Ziye packing up, Li Yuanpei, who originally didn't intend to approach directly, decided to turn towards Fang Ziye, extending his hand with a genuine smile: "Brother Ye, thanks for letting me off the hook."

"You're talking nonsense." Fang Ziye didn't quite believe Li Yuanpei's flattery.

Li Yuanpei had gone out for a month of intensive training this time, and he must have gained a lot. If they were to really compete, and if Fang Ziye didn't take the shortcut through the training room, it was hard to judge who would come out on top.

After all, Li Yuanpei had a priority mentorship relationship with Professor Deng Yong. If Professor Deng Yong liked him and wanted to keep a familiar student by his side, he might not want Fang Ziye even if he published a hundred SCI papers.

Of course, if Professor Deng Yong didn't want him, the hospital would find ways for other professors to take him. A hundred SCI papers were still quite impressive.

Just as Fang Ziye said these words and hadn't moved on, suddenly two packets of black duck feet appeared in front of Fang Ziye and Li Yuanpei: "Senior brothers, would you like to fill your stomachs first?"

The voice came from Luo Tingzhu, soft yet generous, holding snacks from the "Busy with Snacks" brand.

Li Yuanpei and Fang Ziye were both slightly startled upon hearing this and looked at Luo Tingzhu.

Luo Tingzhu was still shaking the three packets of duck feet held between her scallion-white fingers, indicating that each of them could take one packet.
