The village was in chaos. Smoke billowed from several burning huts, and the air was filled with the clash of steel and cries of battle. Minerva and Hana raced towards the center of the commotion, their earlier confrontation momentarily forgotten in the face of this new threat.
As they rounded a corner, Minerva's breath caught in her throat. A group of monstrous creatures, unlike anything she'd seen before, were tearing through the village's defenses. They were humanoid but grotesquely misshapen, with elongated limbs and faces that seemed to be a nightmarish blend of human and insect features.
"Chimeras," Hana hissed, her frail appearance belied by the steel in her voice. "They've never attacked this boldly before."
Minerva's mind raced. This was it - the moment to put her training to the test. But could she risk revealing her abilities in front of everyone? The weight of her secret pressed down on her, warring with her desire to protect the village that had taken her in.
A scream cut through her indecision. One of the village children was cornered by a chimera, its mandibles clicking hungrily as it advanced.
Without thinking, Minerva reached out with her mind, calling to the insects around her. A swarm of wasps responded, descending on the chimera in a furious cloud. The creature howled, swatting at the air as the wasps stung relentlessly.

Minerva guided the child to safety, then turned her attention to the broader battle. She could see Jiro and Takeshi fighting valiantly, but they were outnumbered. To her surprise, she caught glimpses of Hana moving with unexpected agility, her seemingly frail form weaving through the chaos with purpose.
Making a split-second decision, Minerva expanded her control, reaching for every insect within range. The strain was immense, like trying to hold back a flood with her bare hands.
[Warning: Approaching Mana Limit]
Gritting her teeth against the pain building behind her eyes, Minerva directed swarms of biting and stinging insects towards the chimeras. The air became thick with buzzing as beetles, wasps, and even normally docile butterflies joined the fray.
From the corner of her eye, Minerva saw Hana staring at her, a strange glimmer in the old woman's eyes. There was no hiding it now - Hana had seen everything.
But there was no time to worry about that. The chimeras were falling back, overwhelmed by the insect assault. Minerva pushed harder, feeling a strange energy building within her. It was as if something long dormant was awakening, responding to her desperate need.

Suddenly, Minerva could sense every insect in her swarm individually, feeling their movements as if they were extensions of her own body. With this new awareness, she coordinated their attacks with deadly precision. Wasps targeted eyes, beetles chewed through tough hide, and butterflies created disorienting patterns with their wings.
The tide of the battle turned. The remaining chimeras retreated, fleeing into the forest with angry swarms in pursuit. As the last enemy disappeared from view, Minerva released her control, and the insects dispersed.
The village fell silent, save for the crackle of dying fires and the groans of the wounded. Minerva swayed on her feet, exhausted from the mental exertion. Her vision swam, and she tasted copper in her mouth.
"Minerva," Jiro's voice cut through the haze of her fatigue. "What was that?"
She turned to face the village leader, acutely aware of every eye upon her. Hana stood at Jiro's side, her wizened face unreadable. The other villagers wore expressions ranging from awe to fear.
Before Minerva could respond, a wave of dizziness washed over her. The world tilted, and she felt herself falling. The last thing she saw before darkness took her was Hana rushing forward with surprising speed to catch her.
As consciousness slipped away, Minerva's mind whirled with questions. What were those chimeras? How had they known to attack now? And most pressingly - what would happen to her now that her secret was out?
In the depths of her unconscious mind, something stirred. A memory, or perhaps a dream, of shimmering wings and ancient, towering trees. A voice, achingly familiar yet unknown, whispered words she couldn't quite grasp. But before she could make sense of it, it faded, leaving only a lingering sense of something forgotten.
Hours later, Minerva awoke in a dimly lit hut. Her body ached, and her head throbbed with each heartbeat. As her eyes adjusted to the gloom, she made out two figures engaged in hushed conversation nearby.
"...can't ignore this, Hana," Jiro was saying. "Her power could be the key to our survival."
"Or it could bring ruin upon us all," Hana replied, her voice carrying none of the frailty Minerva had come to associate with the old woman. "You know the legends as well as I do. If she is what I suspect..."
Their voices trailed off as they noticed Minerva stirring. Jiro approached, his face a mask of concern and curiosity.
"How are you feeling, Minerva?" he asked gently.
Minerva tried to sit up, wincing at the effort. "I've been better," she managed to croak. "The village... is everyone...?"
"Thanks to you, our losses were minimal," Jiro assured her. "But I think it's time we had a talk about these abilities of yours."
Minerva's heart sank. This was the moment she had been dreading. As she prepared to explain herself, she caught Hana's eye. The old woman – if she truly was old – gave an almost imperceptible nod, as if to say, "Choose your words carefully."
With a deep breath, Minerva began to speak, knowing that whatever she said next would change her life in this new world forever.
