Chapter 14 - CHAPTER FOURTEEN PAYING FOR INFORMATION

A group of children have made their way to the top of a hill that sat just outside of the village. One of the children pointed out that they could see the river from where they were. The others snap their heads to try and see if they can see the river too. A girl shouted out, "Nu huh, that's not the river." "Yes it is, you can see where the bridge is RIGHT THERE." A young boy shouted as he pointed with excitement. The others all looked out to try and see the bridge, except for one small child who watched a cloaked figure run past two buildings. The cloaked figure moved quickly along the side of the buildings clinging to the shadows that were cast from the midday sun that hung overhead. The cloaked figure stopped at the corner of a building. The figure peered out from around the corner revealing Lily's face. Lily dashed across the road and ducked behind a stack of boxes. The ghostly figure faintly faded from Lily's shadow. "We are running out of time, you need to find this Nesfundur soon or you will be looking for him without me." Lily nodded, "I know, I feel the pull as we speak but I can't seem to find him." Lily slowly glanced out from where she hid, she saw the daily life of the village, and mothers and wives carried laundry. Others were still cleaning up the rumble from the Gultonk. Lily's attention locked on to three knights who rode on horseback making their way down the road toward her. She quickly pulled back and pushed herself against the wall of the building. She tried to make herself as flat as possible. They rode past and as they did she overheard them say, "We caught the Boarkar woman and another stranger." Before she could make sense of anything else they said they were gone. She loosened her body and slowly walked between the buildings. The sudden pull from her shadow startled her, she turned to her shadow and saw the silhouette of her brother fade. She felt her heart twitch with grief, but she quickly pushed past it and walked on. Lily made her way to the other side of the alleyway and saw a beggar sleeping on the side of the road. Lily picked up a small rock and tossed it at the beggar, with a startled jump he picked his head up and saw Lily gesturing over to her. The beggar stood up and made his way over. "What ya want lady?" he grunted out, "I got important things to do you know." Lily unamused grabs the beggar by his collar, "I'm looking for a Nesfundur, he was here making jokes and playing music." The beggar with his hands in the air gulped down his fear and replied, "I think the knights took him prisoner the last night, I think he was messing the Gultonk or som-." Lily dropped the beggar before he could finish. "Where would they have taken him?" She snarled. The beggar sat up and pointed down the road, " They probably took him to their main office down the road you roughen!" Lily rolled her eyes and began her way down the road. "Oh, so no compensation?!" The beggar was suddenly hit with a small almost empty coin bag. Inside holding about six coins, the beggar quickly closes the bag and slips away moving his hands in a conducting manner. After a while, Lily finds herself within an eye shot of the office, until the screams of a child pierce through the air. The small child cried out louder and louder as they drew closer to Lily. She realizes the man carrying the child is the Tavern keeper. He looked up to meet her gaze and was quickly startled and took off running down an alleyway. "Wait, why are you running from me, I have done nothing to you?" Lily shouted, only to be met with the Tavern keeper turning and yelling back, "I want nothing to do with you travelers, you and all other outsiders are no longer welcomed at my Inn again!" Lily was confused as he would say that. Just yesterday he was cheerful and more than willing to accommodate her. Even had the sense to leave her alone after she ordered her drink. She turned to the path to the office and continued and before long she found herself standing in front of the main entrance to the Knight's office. She stood close enough to see the patrols that made their rounds and the archers that sat on the rooftop. The sun still hung high in the sky and she still needed to wait to call on her brother again. Lily searched the outskirts of the Knight's property and found a tree she could climb up. Luckily the branches were still full and thickened with leaves. She sat in the shade and peered out to memorize the rotations and the timing of each patrol. "That much she could do at least" echoed through her mind. A phrase her brothers would commonly say about her when they were younger. She sat there until the evening skies began to change and the sun lay on the tip of the horizon.
