Chapter 3 - Darkness in the woods

As the heavy oak door closed behind his father and brother, the silence in Jason's office became oppressive. He remained motionless, staring out the window, his reflection a ghostly outline against the darkening sky. The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, but he barely noticed. His mind raced, replaying the confrontation, weighing his options, and feeling trapped by circumstances of his own making.

The city lights flickered to life one by one, like stars appearing in an urban galaxy. Hours ticked by, marked only by the soft glow of his computer screen and the occasional ping of a neglected email. The office emptied, the sounds of his employees' departures fading until he was left alone with his thoughts and the soft hum of the air conditioning.

Jason's fingers absently traced the edge of his desk, feeling the smooth wood grain – a tangible reminder of his success, now threatened by the very family he'd distanced himself from. The irony wasn't lost on him.

It wasn't until the cleaning crew's vacuum cleaner roared to life in the hallway that Jason stirred from his trance-like state. He blinked, surprised to find the office bathed in darkness, save for his desk lamp. His watch read 11:47 PM.

With a heavy sigh, he gathered his things. The weight of his laptop bag felt like an anchor, dragging him down as he made his way to the parking garage. The squeal of tires on concrete echoed as he peeled out, desperate to put distance between himself and the suffocating walls of his office.

The late-night streets were nearly empty, allowing Jason to push his car to its limits. He found himself on the highway, streetlights blurring as he pushed the speedometer higher. The vibration of the engine thrummed through his body, matching the rapid beat of his heart.

The edge of the city approached, a clear demarcation between the urban sprawl and the promise of solitude beyond. Jason's grip on the steering wheel tightened as memories of his childhood flashed through his mind – summers spent far from the family's watchful eyes, in the company of the only person who truly understood him.

Almost on autopilot, Jason turned onto a familiar, narrow road. Gravel crunched under his tires as he navigated the winding path towards his grandfather's old cabin. The headlights cut through the darkness, illuminating dense foliage and the occasional startled deer. The scent of pine filtered through the car's air vents, stirring a complex mix of emotions – nostalgia, longing, and a deep-seated grief he'd never fully processed.

The cabin sat on the bank of a gently flowing river, its weathered wood a testament to the years it had stood guard over their family secrets. As Jason rounded the final bend, the trees opened up to reveal a star-filled sky, unmarred by city lights. For a moment, he felt a sense of peace wash over him.

That's when he saw it. A pinprick of light, out of place among the familiar constellations. At first, he thought it might be a satellite, but it was moving too erratically. As he watched, the dot grew larger, descending rapidly towards the earth.

Leaning out of the open window, Jason's senses were on high alert. The night air carried a strange electric charge, making the hair on his arms stand on end. Suddenly, an otherworldly glow began to illuminate the area around the cabin. It wasn't the soft, warm light of a fire or lamp, but an intense, almost painful brightness that seemed to come from everywhere at once.

Curiosity overcoming caution, Jason stepped out of his car. His eyes widened as he realized the source of the light - a blazing fireball descending from the sky at an alarming speed. It was heading directly towards him, growing larger and brighter with each passing second.

Before Jason could react, the object struck the ground with tremendous force. The impact was deafening, a thunderous boom that shook the earth and reverberated through his body. The ground heaved and buckled, throwing Jason off his feet as a massive pit formed where the object had landed.

Everything went black.

When Jason regained consciousness, his entire body ached. His vision swam, and the world around him was a blur of dark shapes and dim light. As his senses slowly returned, he realized he was lying at the bottom of the newly formed crater, his expensive suit torn and covered in dirt.

Just a few feet away lay the object that had caused such destruction. But it wasn't the massive, blazing sphere he had seen moments before. Instead, it was a small, uneven, bizarrely shaped rocky stone, roughly the size of a basketball. Despite its diminutive size, it radiated an intense energy that Jason could feel prickling against his skin.

The stone glowed with an otherworldly effect, pulsing with colors that seemed to shift and change as he watched. A strange, low humming emanated from it, almost below the threshold of hearing yet impossible to ignore. The sound seemed to resonate within Jason's chest, making him feel simultaneously uneasy and inexplicably drawn to the object.

Out of his blurred vision, Jason saw the glowing, bizarre stone. Its otherworldly light pulsed in the darkness, creating shifting shadows that danced across the crater's uneven surface. He didn't know what it was or where it came from, but its presence filled him with a mix of fear and fascination.

As Jason tried to move, pain shot through his body, intensifying with each small motion. He could feel warm blood trickling from various injuries, soaking into his torn clothing and the disturbed earth beneath him. The metallic taste of blood filled his mouth, and each breath became more labored. In that moment, lying broken at the bottom of the impact crater, Jason felt certain he would die at any minute.

Unbeknownst to him, the stone began to move. Slowly, almost imperceptibly at first, it rolled across the uneven ground towards his battered form.

Jason's fading consciousness barely registered the movement, his mind clouded by pain and the surreal nature of his situation.

Suddenly, when the stone was just inches from his outstretched hand, it opened. The action was swift and unexpected, accompanied by a soft hissing sound. A distinct purple smoke puffed out from the stone's interior, curling and twisting in the air before dissipating into the night.

As the smoke cleared, Jason's bleary eyes struggled to focus on the stone's revealed interior.

What he saw defied his understanding and sent a fresh wave of shock through his system.

Completely contrasting with its rough, rocky exterior, the inside of the stone appeared to be a smooth, metallic casing. It gleamed in the strange light, its surface unmarred and clearly artificial.

Within this metallic shell was a transparent barrier, forming what looked like another purple-colored sphere.

But it was what lay at the center of this inner sphere that truly captured Jason's fading attention.

There, suspended in the purple haze, was a strange, gory-looking red ball. As Jason stared, his vision swimming in and out of focus, he realized, with a mix of fascination and horror, that the red object was moving. It pulsed rhythmically, expanding and contracting with a steady beat.

With a jolt of realization that cut through his pain-induced haze, Jason understood what he was seeing. The red ball was thumping like a heart – a bizarre, alien heart floating in the center of this impossible stone.

As he lay there, his own heartbeat faltering and his breath coming in ragged gasps, Jason couldn't tear his gaze away from the pulsing red orb. It seemed to beat in opposition to his failing heart, strong and steady where he was weak and fading.

The purple smoke continued to curl around him, its scent unlike anything he had ever encountered—alien and yet somehow familiar.

As Jason lay there, his vision fading in and out, he couldn't tear his gaze away from the pulsing, purple-red orb within the alien sphere. Its rhythmic beating seemed to hypnotize him, drawing him deeper into a trance-like state despite the pain wracking his body.

Suddenly, without warning, the glowing ball sprang into action. It leapt from its containment, crossing the short distance between the open stone and Jason's prone form in an instant. Before Jason could even process what was happening, the orb attached itself to his chest, right above his heart.

A new wave of horror washed over Jason as he felt his shirt begin to disintegrate. The fabric seemed to melt away, as if eaten by some unseen acid. He wanted to scream, to tear the thing away from his body, but the pain from his injuries left him weak and immobile.

To his mounting terror, Jason watched as the purple-red ball began to sink into his skin. It was as if his flesh had become permeable, allowing the alien object to seep through like water through sand. The sensation was indescribable – a mixture of burning, tingling, and a deep, invasive pressure.

Panic surged through Jason's system, providing a momentary burst of adrenaline. With all the strength he could muster, he tried to claw at his chest, desperate to remove the foreign object.

But his efforts were in vain. His fingers scrabbled uselessly against his skin, unable to find purchase on the sinking orb.

As the alien heart continued its inexorable journey into his body, the pain intensified. It felt as if liquid fire was being injected directly into his chest. The burning sensation spread outward from the point of entry, racing through his veins and setting every nerve ending alight.

Unable to contain his agony any longer, Jason let out a blood-curdling scream. The sound echoed through the crater, a primal expression of fear and pain that seemed to go on forever. But there was no one around to hear his cries, no one to come to his aid.

The world around Jason began to spin, reality blurring at the edges. The pain, the fear, the sheer impossibility of what was happening—it was all too much for his mind to process. As the alien orb disappeared completely beneath his skin, leaving behind only a faint, pulsing glow, Jason felt himself slipping away.

His last conscious thought was a mixture of terror and strange anticipation. What was this thing doing to him? Would he survive? And if he did, what would he become?

As these questions swirled in his mind, darkness finally claimed him. Jason's body went limp, his screams fading to silence as he lost consciousness. He lay there motionless at the bottom of the crater, the faint purple glow in his chest the only sign that something extraordinary had occurred.

The night wore on, insects chirping and nocturnal animals going about their business, oblivious to the transformative event that had just taken place. And all the while, deep within Jason's chest, the alien heart continued to beat, its rhythm slowly but surely aligning with his own.
