As Jason sat in the passenger seat of the truck, his mind still reeling from the events of the past night, a sudden, distinct feminine voice resonated within his mind:
SYNCHRONIZING COMPLETE.
HOST IDENTIFIED: JASON BLAZE.
GENDER: MALE.
AGE: 25.
HEART SYNCHRONIZING 100%.
SOUL INTEGRATION COMPLETED.
The voice repeated this information in a loop, causing Jason to jump in his seat, startled by the unexpected intrusion in his mind. The truck driver, a grizzled man in his fifties, glanced over with concern. "You alright there, son? Looked like you saw a ghost or somethin'."
Jason, his heart racing, asked breathlessly, "Did... did you hear any voices just now?"
The driver furrowed his brow, shaking his head. "Nah, didn't hear nothin'. You sure you're okay?"
Before Jason could respond, the feminine voice spoke again, this time in a more conversational tone: "CALM DOWN, JASON. OTHER THAN YOU, NO ONE CAN HEAR MY VOICE."
Jason's eyes widened, sweat beading on his forehead. His thoughts raced, a mix of fear and disbelief. How in the fuck is there a voice in my head?
Trying to maintain his composure, Jason spoke internally, directing his thoughts to the voice. "Who are you? How are you doing that? What are you?"
The voice responded promptly, "I am a blood nanite."
Jason's mind flashed back to the crater, the alien stone, and the pulsing orb that had merged with his body. "Wait, did you come from the stone back then?" he asked silently.
The voice remained silent for a moment, as if considering its response.
Growing increasingly anxious, Jason pressed on. "What's happening to me?"
"If you are asking about your body's transformation, yes, it was me," the nanite replied. "Your body was too weak to incorporate the blood nanites into your system, so I had to redesign your whole system. You have undergone metamorphosis."
Jason's eyes widened even further, his breath catching in his throat. "What! What do you mean by metamorphosis?" He thought, panic rising in his chest.
The voice continued, its tone matter-of-fact and devoid of emotion. "I am a tool attached to the heart and was programmed to assist in the process of integrating the heart into the user."
Jason's mind raced back to the purple-red ball that had leaped onto his chest. It was a heart, he realized, his thoughts swirling with a mixture of awe and terror. Questions flooded his mind: What kind of heart? Why was it put into him? What did this metamorphosis mean for his body, his life?
As the truck rumbled down the highway, Jason sat in silence, his outward appearance masking the tumultuous conversation happening within his mind. The ordinary world outside the window seemed surreal now, in stark contrast to the extraordinary changes happening within him.
The nanite's presence in his mind, the transformation of his body, the alien heart beating within his chest – all of it pointed to a reality far beyond anything Jason had ever imagined. The city skyline appeared on the horizon.
