Chapter 2 - Hold on to me

Tomorrow morning, the mother woke up with her two pups in her embrace, feeling their warmth. She decided to hunt early on and take her pups with her so they could learn a thing or do something, but when she tried to wake them up, only one woke up, and the other one was still sleeping soundly. She decided to let the younger pup rest there while she and the other pup would hunt for food.

She tried hunting a rabbit for a while, but sadly, he escaped, going into his burrow never to be seen again. That's until she found some meat chunks on the ground. She ate some and gave her pup some as well; it would replenish their energy for the next hunt.

Some hours passed...

Sitting in the bushes, the mother found another rabbit enjoying some grass. She carefully approached the bunny, making sure no sound would escape, and when his neck turned towards another bunch of grass, she jumped in and started running towards it. The rabbit noticed it, but it was too late to run away and ended up as dead meat.

Overjoyed with the results, she went back to her pup. The mother started feeling a bit numb; maybe she was tired; however, she still had to keep on hunting.

She was petrified when she saw her pup falling limp onto the ground, convulsing on the floor. She started licking his tiny fur, hoping it would do something, but she was feeling weaker by the second. She decided to take the dead rabbit and head to the cave, where her other pup was sleeping safely.

When she arrived there, she saw her pup still there and still sleeping. She put the rabbit somewhere nearby and found it hard to stay on her feet. She laid down on the floor and slept.

...

Eventually, the pup woke up.

...

It started sniffing the dead body, licking its fur, and nudging it with his head. Seeing no response, it started whimpering. It was confused why she was not waking up; he was very hungry. He decided to stay near her until she woke up.

It used to be so comfortable in his mother's embrace, but now that it was so cold, the pup didn't feel secure at all.

Hours passed, and the pup only grew hungrier. It realized something was wrong, but he didn't know what to do. He knew how to find water, but hunting for food or running away from predators would pose some problems.

He couldn't wait anymore and found the dead rabbit. It started munching on it like there was no tomorrow. He left some for his sister and went to the river to drink some water; it was close by the cave.

After the pup drank some water, he found a shiny rock near the river. The glow was really nice to look at, so he decided to take it. The pup wanted to give the shiny rock to his mother as a gift, so he started running towards it, but just as he was about to take it, a black bear heard him and started taking long strides towards the pup.

Seeing that the bear was about to crush the shiny rock, the pup ran beneath the bear's legs, catching the rock in his mouth, and sprinted towards a narrow crevice so the bear couldn't catch him. The bear was fuming from anger, his prey escaped but he soon went back and ate some berries, the little pup couldn't even be called a dessert.

The pup headed towards the cave. He left the shiny rock on his mother's head and still had some energy left but seeing that his sister didn't come back he decided to eat the rest of the bunny and went back to sleep.

Eventually he woke up the next day and saw his mom still sleeping, it started whimpering and trying everything to wake her up but nothing helped. His stomach started growling.

The pup went outside of the cave and started searching for prey until at some point he found a squirrel, she was picking up some acorns to stash them for winter. He remembered how his mother hunted, looking for the perfect time to jump in. And when the squirrel picked up an acorn, the pup started jumping towards her.

Noticing the pup, the squirrel quickly climbed up a tree and started throwing acorns onto the pup, hitting his head.

It hurt, and he was still hungry, after that he tried hunting rabbits, birds or mice but every prey managed to get away. The pup was tired and hungry.

It got late and eventually started raining so the pup went back to the cave before any nocturnal predator would kill him. He rolled into a ball and sat next to his mom, falling asleep.

The rock started shinning brighter and brighter until it suddenly stopped. A petite figure could be seen stepping out of the stone. The goddess looked around and saw the pup and the lifeless body of his mother with the stone on her head, she then nodded. 'I need to repay my savior.' and she placed her hand on top of the mother's head and slowly dispersed.

'Cling to me, little pup. I may not nurture you like she did, but you still deserve to warmth and affection.'
