Chereads / The Cursed Magus / Chapter 19 - 19

Chapter 19 - 19

**Chapter 19: The Awakening Revelation**

Lyra held Arthur gently as his sobs began to subside. She could feel the depth of his pain, and she wanted desperately to help him. She knelt beside him, her hand still resting on his head, and tried to coax him into speaking.

"Arthur," she said softly, her voice a soothing balm in the cool, damp air of the cave. "Can you tell me what happened? I want to help you, but I need to understand."

Arthur couldn't form words. He only cried harder, his small body shaking with the force of his grief. Lyra's heart ached for him, but she also felt a deep sorrow for her own loss. Her partner, the guardian of the forest, was gone, and the weight of that grief pressed heavily on her. She decided to try something else, something deeper. She closed her eyes and began to manipulate the mana around them, weaving a delicate spell to create a mind link with Arthur.

The moment the link was established, Lyra was bombarded with a torrent of emotions and memories. She saw flashes of Arthur's past: the brutal death of his mother at the hands of his father, the horrors of the orphanage, the military academy, and the betrayal that led to his siblings' deaths. She saw his countless reincarnations, each one filled with suffering and struggle. And then she saw Baal, the demon now bound to Arthur, radiating malevolence and power. The sight of Baal made her recoil in fear.

Arthur felt the intrusion and instinctively pulled back, breaking the link. His sobs quieted, replaced by a wary silence. Lyra took a deep breath, steadying herself. She had seen enough to understand his pain, but the fear of the demon inside him gnawed at her.

**Lyra's Thoughts:**

_What kind of life has this child led to carry such a burden? And this demon... how can I trust him? How can I ensure he is not being controlled? I must protect him, but also be cautious._

"I'm sorry," she said, her voice gentle and tinged with regret. "I didn't mean to pry, but I needed to understand your suffering. You've been through so much, Arthur."

Arthur nodded, wiping his tears with the back of his hand. "It hurts so much," he whispered, his voice trembling. "They killed my parents."

Lyra's heart broke for him, but her own grief surfaced. She remembered her partner's gentle eyes and the strength he had given her. Now he was gone, and the emptiness was overwhelming. "I know, Arthur. But you're not alone. I'll help you, as much as I can."

Arthur looked up at her, his eyes filled with a mixture of hope and despair. "Why did your husband come to the cave?" he asked, his voice trembling.

Lyra sighed, her expression sad. "My husband was the guardian of this forest. He sensed an awakening near the source of mana and came to investigate."

"Awakening?" Arthur repeated, unfamiliar with the term.

Lyra nodded. "Yes. An awakening is when someone manages to draw the world's mana into their own body, expanding their mana core. It's a rare and powerful ability."

**Arthur's Thoughts:**

_Awakening? Is that what happened to me? And if it is, how do I control it?_

Arthur's eyes widened. "Is that the same as mana crystals?"

Lyra shook her head. "Not exactly. Mana crystals are reservoirs of mana that magical beasts create to enhance their physical and magical abilities. They act as a second mana core, but they're not the same as a true awakening."

Arthur frowned, thinking back to his experience in the cave. "I don't know if I awakened, but something happened to me."

Lyra looked at him with astonishment. "For a child of five years to awaken... that's extraordinary."

Lyra's curiosity deepened. "And this demon... I saw a dark presence within you. Who is he?"

Before Arthur could respond, Baal's voice echoed in his mind. "Don't tell her, you fool!"

Arthur mentally rolled his eyes. "Why not? She can help."

"Help? A mortal? Please," Baal scoffed. "Just keep quiet."

Arthur sighed. "Fine. But if you think I'm going to keep this a secret forever, you're mistaken."

"What are you muttering about?" Lyra asked, her curiosity piqued.

Arthur sighed again and decided to ignore Baal's warning. "Baal is very talkative and sarcastic. He's not happy that a child managed to enslave him."

Baal's indignant voice rang out. "Enslaved? Really, Arthur, must you be so dramatic?"

Arthur snorted. "Well, it's true, isn't it? You're stuck with me."

Baal's voice took on a petulant tone. "I'm not stuck. I'm... temporarily inconvenienced."

Arthur rolled his eyes. "See what I have to deal with?"

Lyra couldn't help but smile at their exchange, despite the gravity of the situation. "You two sound like an old married couple."

Arthur blushed slightly but managed a weak smile. "It's not exactly a pleasant arrangement."

**Lyra's Thoughts:**

_I can't let my guard down. This demon... Baal. His presence is terrifying. But I must ensure Arthur is safe._

Lyra's expression grew serious again. "Do you know where the amulet is?"

Arthur shook his head. "I don't. After the battle, everything became a blur."

Lyra studied him for a moment, her eyes narrowing with suspicion. "I need to be sure you're not being controlled by the demon." She began to chant softly, her hands glowing with a pale light as she cast a spell on Arthur.

Arthur felt a strange warmth spread through his body, followed by a gentle tugging sensation in his mind. Lyra's magic probed carefully, searching for any signs of demonic influence. Arthur stood still, trusting her despite the discomfort.

After a few moments, Lyra's spell finished, and she looked visibly relieved. "The demon is under a slave spell. He's bound to you, but you are in control. That's a relief."

Arthur nodded, feeling a weight lift off his shoulders. "So, I'm not being controlled?"

Lyra shook her head. "No. But you must remain vigilant. Demons are tricky and deceitful."How did this happen?"

Arthur took a deep breath and began to explain, ignoring Baal's protests in his mind. "I found an amulet in the cave. When I put it on, I felt this immense power surge through me. Then Baal appeared, and we fought the guardian."

Lyra listened intently, her fear and grief momentarily overshadowed by her concern for Arthur. "And now Baal is bound to you?"

Arthur nodded. "Yes. He's not happy about it."

Baal's voice echoed in Arthur's mind, dripping with sarcasm. "Not happy? That's an understatement. You've humiliated me, child."

Arthur smirked. "Get used to it, Baal."

**Lyra's Thoughts:**

_This child... he has so much strength, even with a demon bound to him. But I must be careful. Baal is dangerous._

Lyra couldn't help but chuckle at their exchange, though the fear still lingered in her eyes. "Arthur, do you need any help? I don't know much about demons, but I can try to find information that might help you."

Arthur nodded, grateful for her offer. "Thank you, Lyra. Any help would be appreciated."

Lyra continued, "I can also teach you about the world of the awakened. You must be careful not to reveal your abilities to anyone. The power you possess is both a gift and a curse."

Arthur nodded, understanding the gravity of her words. "I'll be careful."

Lyra smiled warmly. "Good. You're a remarkable young man, Arthur. Despite everything you've been through, you have a strength that will serve you well."

Lyra then knelt down to be at eye level with Arthur. "Let's get you cleaned up and fed. You've had a long day."

The cave was silent, except for the soft echoes of their footsteps. The air was cool and filled with the earthy scent of moss and damp stone. Outside, the forest was coming to life with the sounds of birds chirping and leaves rustling in the gentle breeze. The sun was setting, casting a warm, golden glow over everything.

Arthur and Lyra walked in silence for a while, each lost in their own thoughts. Arthur's mind was a whirlwind of emotions and questions. He felt a deep gratitude for Lyra's kindness and a burning determination to avenge his parents. But he also felt a growing sense of fear and uncertainty about the power he had unleashed.
