Chapter 18 - Devil

"Oh no!" Yvonne gritted her teeth, her eyes wide with panic. Her pupils danced about, trying to get a glimpse of where the macabre beast would attack from.

With each second that passed, her heart seemed to slow down more.

And just when it felt like she would break down from the panic, a figure abruptly appeared before her.

Bam!

Yvonne barely managed to raise her hand up in time to block the attack of her beast. Her hand trembled, immediately going numb from the impact of the attack. Her body cut through the storm, landing a few meters back.

The beast still has it's weird smile, it large body vanished once more as a loud scream resounded through the path,

"Yvonne!!"

"Run! Keep running!" Yvonne yelled in return.

I can't have Marceline fight, it will only end badly.

Yvonne rolled on the floor, using one of her hands to push herself up. She moved with amazing agility, immediately crossing her hand in front of her as her instincts called out.

Bam!

Another attack landed, this time from the back. Her body arched and Yvonne felt her vertebral column strain under the pressure.

She gritted her teeth, bracing herself as she landed. She stood up and immediately bolted towards a tree, running in a zigzag manner.

Another attack came from the beast, and then another and soon, Yvonne was panting on the floor, blood streaking down one side of her lips.

The beast seemed to be toying with her, moving so fast that it vanished and yet only appearing at a certain time when she least expects it to strike.

Yvonne panted, her eyes glancing around. Her cloth was caked in mud and grime, the attacks of the beast had taken her off the main mountain path to a place with sparse vegetation.

That was when she spotted it, quick footsteps outlining itself as it approached her. It took a roundabout path, going to her back.

Yvonne smirked,

"Checkmate!"

She immediately rolled forward, her metallic belt whip which had remained in her hand whipping out in a horizontal arch.

Splotch!

Black liquid splattered on the floor followed by a pained cry from the beast as its image outlined itself before Yvonne.

It's not that it's too fast. This bastard mutation is rather special. It can turn invisible.

Yvonne had noticed the anomaly from the second attack when she had calculated how fast the monster was. She noticed that its speed varied and she also found it strange how it always seemed to have been waiting at its position.

It's pretty smart. It tried to cover up by pretending it was too fast. Unfortunately, the math is always correct.

Yvonne whipped out once more but the beast had moved, it turned invisible once more and attacked her but Yvonne could see its footprints.

Now that I can see its footprints, it has become easier to predict its movements and attack patterns.

Yvonne did a backflip, the rain droplets above her head seemed to have been wiped away by something. She smirked, her knees buckling as she dashed forward the moment she landed.

I can't make it visible but what I can do is reduce its mobility to allow me to escape.

Yvonne attacked once more but to her surprise, her attack passed through, the metallic blade whipping nothing but air.

What?

Before Yvonne could react, the monster's attack had landed, its massive hand drilling into her guts.

Yvonne spat a mouthful of blood and spit as she was sent flying even more than before. Her eyes rolled as she slammed into a tree, her body landing limply on the floor.

What's wrong? Its mutation isn't invisibility?... I see, I overlooked a minor detail, the rain..

Yvonne's eyes were glazed and a bit out of focus, her bones were rattled and she had multiple fractures. One could only marvel at her durability.

Yvonne strained her head, looking in the direction of the beacon. A small smile appeared on her face,

What a shame.

A huge shadow appeared before her, it was the monster. Its smile was wider than before but its eyes held deep madness and fury.

It raised its fist, about to end Yvonne's life when something unexpected happened. A loud roar reverberated through the area, the whole mountain path seemed to become silent under the road.

Yvonne's eyes gained a bit of luster as her eyes widened. She felt her heart palpitate at the sound of the roar, a deep fear that she never knew existed surging within her.

But she didn't seem to mind, her entire being was instead focused on something else. The beast.

Its body was trembling, its raised fist came down as it looked around in fear, as if searching to see if whatever it was that made such a sound was around it.

Yvonne saw her chance and decided to seize it. She immediately moved, her fist clenched tightly as she wielded the blade whip.

With a flock of her wrist, the blade hardened into a sword and she roared as he plunged the weapon into the leg of the creature, hoping to decrease its mobility.

She left the weapon in the monster's leg, hurrying away from its front as fast as she could. She didn't even look back when she heard its screech pierce into the sky.

But it was futile. She had taken on too much damage, she could barely move. She was too slow.

Bam!

Another attack landed on her back, shattering three of her ribs. Yvonne landed heavily into the mud, blood seeping out of her mouth. Her eyes were filled with fear, the acceptance from before gone.

Now that she had tasted hope, she couldn't get enough. Her eyes immediately became filled with tears as she realized that this was it. She was about to die.

But there was nothing to do about it except regret her decision.

The monster arrived in front of Yvonne, about to attack once more when an object suddenly appeared before its face.

No, it wasn't an object but a figure, a human figure.

Wham!

A heavy noise sounded, followed by a crack sound as the beast was sent staggering backwards. Only then did the figure come into view.

It was Marceline. Her dress was soaking wet and it clung to her body, her metallic heeled boots covered in mud.

Her blue eyes were as cold as the abyss itself and she seemed to have become a different person entirely.

Yvonne watched limply from the ground, not knowing whether to laugh or cry. After all, the devil had arrived.
