Chapter 16 - Casebook 2: A problem in the family

I stood behind the bar watching Drake do his job and serve up drinks. I took in his style and conversation trying to learn the ropes. I then felt the double doors open suddenly and gust of wind blow inside.

I sniffed the wind and then swung my legs over the bar to the other side and landed on my feet on the floor. I hurried forward as a letter flew inside. I caught it in my palm. I frowned at the white envelope. My name was on the face of the envelope.

I smelled the scent of a female on it. I opened it up with the nail on my thumb and took out the letter.

Danny,

I need your help. You don't know me but I need you to find me. I've heard your the best hunter and ranger in the Crossroad. You've got to find me. I need your help. I'm somewhere in the city. If you can find me before sun down then I've got a big reward in it for you. Something you've been hunting for last couple of weeks. You can get it from me but you have to find me first.

I went missing today in the square. I wasn't taken far. Find me.

Emily Valor Longwood.

I had started walking out of the Crossroads and then by the end of it I was running. It wasn't far toward the Square of the town. I had her smell in my head now. I needed to move.

I took a breath and bounded off the ground stepping on the air until I was cutting my time to reach the square down by half the time needed to get to the point. I cased into the side of public trash can as I finally entered the square.

I several Draconian couples around me shook their heads as I got to my feet and started searching for my client. I looked around trying to catch the scent of mysterious client. I tracked her scent on a street corner. I hurried over and found a purse that had her scent on it.

I breathed in different scents in the wind. I started running as I tracked the scent of the female. She was close. I moved with a sureness in my step as I tracked the vehicle that had taken her away. I found building she had been taken and I caught the thick scent of wild life and and something that I haven't smelled before.

I walked inside the building. It was a corner store that sold cigars and liquor. Again under the scents of wild spirits and cigars I smelled my client. Under my feet along with the that strange unidentified alien scent.

"Excuse me but this store is closed to people such as yourself. Leave!" The man said in magic commanding voice meant to control me.

I ignored his command though. I barely even looked at the small man with pointy ears and round royal blue eyes. "I came to pick up a lady you got in the basement." I said.

He said nothing. I looked at him in the eyes then I stared down at him until he looked away. I hoped over the counter leaving him behind me as I walked around to the back tracking her scent.

I felt him put a hand on my arm. My arm felt on fire with pain and I couldn't move it. "Let go of my arm little buddy." I said to him.

"Get the hell out of my shop or you'll regret it." He said in an echoing voice.

I grabbed the front of his shirt collar and through him toward the other side of the shop. I heard him crash outside to the street corner. My arm instant stopped being in pain. I shook of the magic on my body and proceeded to follow where the scent was coming from.

I started knocking on walls and looking at the floor trying to see if I could find the trap door. I found the trap door a second before the floor behind me exposed as someone launched himself up from the basement.

I reacted and sprang up and into backflip as a magical fire storm came was launched at me but I evaded it the storm of wicked magical fire. I caught my attacker by the back of the shirt and slammed him down to the floor as I came down and punched him in the face.

I looked at him and noticed he was another little man with pointy ears like the other guy. Hmm. I pushed him aside and I dropped down in the hole to find the female laying in pool of blood in circle of some type of magical circle that gave off a scent of magic that had me snarling. I frowned at the scent of the blood. I looked at her see if she had any wounds on her body. I saw she wasn't hurt so it wasn't her blood it was somebody else. Blood had a scent to it.

Emily stared at me with wide eyes and pointy ears. She was naked and bathed in the blood. I looked around found of table cloth and a purple cloak. I used the cloth to hold it out to her.

She just stared at me blankly. I slapped my hands waking up. She flinched and looked at me in surprise. She stared at me. "You came." She said.

I nodded and held the cloth to her. "Grab it. I can't touch or go into the circle." I said.

She blinked and nodded her head. She reached out and took it and I quickly dragged her out of the circle. The circle disappeared instantly the moment she was outside of the circle though I could still smell and feel the circle was there.

I attempted wipe her down quickly but she held up her hands stopping me and she took her purse from me opening it she got out a potion with glowing bottle inside and opened it up. Dome of water surrounded her entire body form second and then dropped away to the floor.

Emily shook taking the cloak and wrapping it around her body. She nodded her thanks to me. "Thank you. Thank you." She said.

"INFIDEL!" A male voice roared from the top of the first floor. I could feel the dominance and power in his scent and sense he was type of powerful wizard.

I started to get up but she took my hand arm and she shook her head. "No. You can't beat him. We have to go talk to his Majesty right now." She said.

My eyes went wide as I felt her turn up magic. Her eyes became completely white and glowed. A magical storm surrounded us taking up in a storm until appeared in the city guardians men station morgue.

Dr. Blair had a cup of coffee in his hands and his wife was in his lap taking down notes. He stared at us. He calmly lifted his wife off his lap. She took his cup as he got up and rolled up his sleeves.

"Mr. Sage. Who is this?" He asked me.

I got to the feet helping up Emily. "This is Emily. A client of mean. She scent me a message a few hours ago to help her. I think she has a story to tell you. Miss Emily." I said.

Emily bowed to Dr. Blair first and then me. She went into her purse with shaky hands and removed a pair of keys. "This is my cruiser. It will be parked in the private city parking building in the square. It is yours." She said.

I stared at her shaky form and crying eyes. I started to shaky my head but she glared at me shoving the keys into my palm.

"I asked for your help. This is the agreed upon fee. I will be fine. Thank you again but you have more need of it then me at present and I will leaving the city soon. Take it, please." She said.

I sighed and nodded. "It was an honor to serve you." I said.

Emily bowed again to me and waved me to the door. "Please. Go. You have other matters to tend to. The victim was someone known to your mates. Take the tablecloth to them and they will tell you what you need to do." She said.

I sighed and nodded. "Thank you again. You know how to reach me if you need help again." I said and turned to Dr. Blair. He waved me out the door.

"Be on your way Mr. Sage. It would be best you follow the Oracle's advice and go do what you must do regarding this matter. To the letter of everything she has said. Nothing more." He said advising me how to move.

I nodded. "I will." I said and headed out of the door and hurried to the entrance of the morgue. It look like it was about to be an interesting couple of days.
