Chapter 23 - Chapter 23:The council's verdict

The citadel's grand hall reverberated with an uneasy tension as Kael, Sabrine, and Alastair stood before the Council of Elders once more. The Elders, each cloaked in robes adorned with ancient symbols of power, sat regally on high-backed chairs that seemed to emanate authority. Their stern gazes pierced through the silence, fixing upon the trio with a mixture of disappointment and expectation.

"You have returned," Elder Calista, the eldest and most revered among them, spoke first, her voice carrying the weight of centuries-old wisdom.

Kael and Sabrine exchanged nervous glances, keenly aware of the gravity of their recent failures. Alastair stood beside them, his expression defiant yet tinged with uncertainty.

"We have summoned you here to address the matter of Alastair's escape," Elder Aranis continued, his tone firm and unwavering. "Your failure to keep him under your guidance has jeopardized the delicate balance of our world."

Sabrine stepped forward, her voice steady despite the turmoil within her. "We understand the gravity of our mistake," she began, choosing her words carefully. "But Alastair's actions caught us by surprise. He believed he could find answers on his own."

Kael nodded in agreement, his jaw set with determination. "We pursued him," he added, "but his newfound abilities allowed him to elude us."

"Two seasoned vampires failed to control a newly turned vampire? Does that make any sense?" Elder Darian interjected sharply, his voice cutting through the air like a blade.

"We did manage to convince him to return before any irreversible damage was done," Kael countered, attempting to steer the conversation in their favor.

"He should never have escaped in the first place," Elder Nysara added, her tone tinged with disappointment.

"The council has reached a decision in light of your recent failure," Elder Calista announced solemnly, her voice echoing with finality. "Kael and Sabrine, as of this moment, you have been relieved of your duties as caretakers for the Child of Prophecy."

Kael's eyes widened in disbelief. "This is unjust," he protested, unable to mask his frustration. "Yes, we failed, but to strip us of our responsibilities simply because of one incident—"

"Are you questioning our judgment, Kael?" Elder Darian's voice boomed, his patience wearing thin.

"Please, great Elders, grant us another chance," Sabrine implored, her voice laced with urgency. "We are committed to guiding Alastair on the right path."

"This is not a matter of second chances," Elder Aranis stated firmly. "The fate of our world and the human realm hinges on the Child of Prophecy. Until he is adequately prepared, he must remain under the care of those deemed more capable."

"But—" Kael began, only to be cut off by Elder Nysara.

"Do not question us further," she admonished sternly. "While we have tolerated your previous defiance, it ends here. The Child will be entrusted to different vampires, and that is final."

Kael and Sabrine stood in stunned silence, feeling defeated and out of options. However, before the weight of their dismissal could fully settle, a voice pierced the tension.

"And what about me? Don't I have a say?" Alastair's voice rang out, filled with a mix of determination and defiance.

Kael and Sabrine turned to look at him, surprised by his interruption. The Elders, known for their intolerance of insubordination, regarded Alastair with raised brows and simmering displeasure.

"Are you questioning our authority, Child of Prophecy?" Elder Maelor asked, his tone sharp.

"I merely suggest that the one destined to save all realms should have some say in his own destiny," Alastair replied boldly, meeting the Elders' gaze with unwavering confidence.

"Hmm," Elder Calista hummed thoughtfully, a hint of amusement in her eyes. "Your confidence is commendable, but according to the prophecy, we are tasked with ensuring you are adequately prepared to face the threats ahead. Thus, we retain control over your fate until such time."

"Is there a way for me to prove myself?" Alastair asked, his voice steady despite the tension in the room.

Elder Darian leaned forward, his expression contemplative. "Perhaps a challenge," he mused aloud, his eyes narrowing with interest. "A duel, to test your abilities and your readiness."

Alastair nodded without hesitation. "I accept," he declared, his voice resonating with determination. "Give me the challenge, and I will prove myself worthy of your trust."

Elder Calista considered his request for a moment before nodding slowly. "Very well," she agreed. "You will face a promising young vampire of this generation in a duel. If you succeed, you may remain under the care of Kael and Sabrine, maintaining the status quo. However, if you fail, you will be transferred to new guardians, and Kael and Sabrine will lose their current status and be demoted."

"But—" Kael started, only to be silenced by a stern look from Elder Nysara.

"You have a day to prepare," Elder Aranis announced, his voice cutting through the room's lingering tension. "Return here when you are ready to face your challenge."

With that, the Elders dismissed them, leaving Kael, Sabrine, and Alastair to process the weight of their impending trial.

As they exited the grand hall, a heavy silence hung between them. Kael finally broke the tension. "Why did you intervene like that?" he asked Alastair, frustration evident in his voice.

Alastair met their gazes evenly. "I couldn't stand by while they made decisions about my fate without considering my input," he explained, his tone resolute. "Now, we must focus on preparing for the duel. Our fates—and the balance of the realms—depend on it."

Sabrine nodded in agreement, her mind already racing with plans and strategies. "He's right," she said firmly. "This isn't the time for discord among us. We need to unite and ensure Alastair is ready for whatever challenges lie ahead."

Kael sighed, the weight of their situation settling heavily upon him. "You're both right," he conceded. "Let's prepare. The fate of our world rests on our shoulders now more than ever."

With renewed determination, the trio set off to prepare for the duel that would not only determine Alastair's immediate future but also shape the course of their destinies in ways they had yet to comprehend.
