Chapter 27 - Chapter 27:The veil between worlds

The estate loomed ominously before Jake, its darkened windows like hollow eyes staring down at him. The air was thick with an eerie stillness, as if the entire area had been frozen in time. Jake hesitated at the entrance, feeling an invisible pressure bearing down on him, but he knew he couldn't turn back now. Alastair was somewhere inside, and he had to find him.

Jake stepped cautiously through the rusted gates, the hinges creaking like a warning. The path leading to the main building was overgrown with weeds and lined with statues, their once-proud features now weathered and cracked. Each step Jake took felt heavier, as if the ground itself was trying to pull him down.

As he approached the mansion, Jake's phone buzzed faintly in his pocket. He pulled it out, seeing the tracking app flicker back to life for a brief moment before it died again. A chill ran down his spine. The signal was weak, but it was unmistakable—Alastair's location was inside this place.

Jake reached the front door, which was ajar, as if someone had left it open for him. He pushed it wider, and it groaned in protest, revealing a grand, yet dilapidated foyer. Dust hung in the air, catching the pale light that filtered through cracks in the boarded-up windows. The mansion's interior, once majestic, now felt like the decaying remains of a forgotten era.

"Alastair?" Jake called out, his voice echoing through the empty halls.

No response. Only the sound of his own breathing filled the space.

As he ventured deeper into the estate, he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched, but he pushed those thoughts aside as he couldn't see anything actually watching him. Just then, he heard a sound. Before he could react, a shadowy figure seized him by the shoulder and slammed him into the wall. He tried to break free, but the figure's strength was overwhelming. He looked up to see a tall, intimidating figure with glowing crimson eyes glaring down at him.

"Who are you?" the figure demanded.

"I—I'm Jake. I'm here to find Alastair," Jake stammered.

Kael's eyes narrowed. "And how do you know Alastair?" His grip tightened, causing Jake to wince in pain. Before Jake could answer, another figure approached—one with more feminine features but an aura no less intimidating than the man before him.

"Kael, wait," Sabrine said, her voice softer but no less intense. "He may be telling the truth."

"We can't take that risk, Sabrine. The estate is hidden for a reason. No one should've been able to find it."

Sabrine stepped closer, her gaze piercing as she studied Jake. "But he did, and if he's here for Alastair, we need to know why." She looked back at Kael, her tone firm. "Let him speak."

Kael growled low in his throat but, after an intense moment, released Jake, who slumped to the ground, gasping for breath.

"Start talking," Kael demanded, his eyes never leaving Jake. "How do you know Alastair? And why are you here?"

Jake swallowed hard, his mind racing. He could feel the danger in the air, the barely restrained power in the vampires before him. But he also knew that telling the truth was his only chance.

"Alastair is my friend," Jake said, his voice steadier now. "He went missing, and his family didn't remember him. But I did. I've been tracking him, trying to find out where he went, and the tracker led me here." He held up his phone, showing them the app, though it had gone silent in the estate's proximity.

Kael and Sabrine exchanged a glance, their expressions unreadable.

"He's telling the truth," Sabrine finally said, her tone contemplative. "No ordinary human would have found this place, let alone made it this far."

Jake met Kael's fierce gaze with a mixture of determination and trepidation. The intensity of the moment pressed heavily on him, making it clear that any misstep could have dire consequences. Sabrine's presence, though calming in contrast to Kael's hostility, did little to ease the tension.

"You can't expect me to leave just because you say he's fine," Jake said, his voice wavering but resolute. "I need to see for myself."

Kael's eyes blazed with irritation. "Do you think you're in any position to make demands? This estate is a place of utmost secrecy, and you just came in and decided to make demands. You're basically an intruder. I shouldn't even let you leave."

Sabrine stepped between Kael and Jake, her voice soft but firm. "Kael, let's not forget why we're here. If Jake is telling the truth, we need to handle this carefully."

Just as they were contemplating what to do next, a figure appeared in the doorway leading to a dimly lit corridor. It was Alastair.

Alastair stepped into the foyer, his presence commanding immediate attention. The moonlight caught the edges of his silhouette, casting an otherworldly glow. Jake's heart pounded as he took in the transformation—his friend was now unmistakably different, a being that radiated a powerful, almost eerie aura.

"Jake?" Alastair's voice held a familiar lilt, but there was an undertone of something ancient and untamed. The way he moved, the intensity in his eyes—it was all foreign and strangely mesmerizing.

"Alastair," Jake said, struggling to mask his bewilderment. He took a tentative step forward, his gaze fixed on his friend. "You... you're really Alastair, aren't you?"

Alastair's expression flickered between recognition and something else—an emotion too complex to name. "Yes, it's me," he replied, his tone carrying a hint of sadness. "But things have changed. I've changed."

Jake tried to reconcile the person standing before him with the friend he had known. "I can see that. But what's happened to you? Why are you... like this?"

"It's a long story, Jake, but I'll tell you everything," Alastair said ready to tell his friend everything about his situation
