Chapter 5 - fanatics and extremities

"What are you doing?" Jason asked as he pulled her into the hallway. Caroline's eyes widened in surprise.

"What do you mean?" She asked him in a hushed voice, staring into his brandy eyes.

"You are pregnant for Marcus? He cannot have a child, there's a lie somewhere and I know it's from you!!" He said to her, holding her arms tightly against the wall, she struggled against his grip.

"Jason you're hurting me!" She hushed and he let her go. She gathered herself and straightened her dress before asking. "What do you mean impotent?"

"Don't you know it! The accident! He had an irreversible Vasectomy and having a child was out of the question, so tell me the truth, whose child is that?" He insisted and rage flickered through her eyes.

"It's definitely not yours! We had sex six months ago and you are the only other person I did it with! I'm not a whore!" She retorted, swatting him on the arms.

A woman could only go so long as three years before her carnal needs completely took over her, Jason had been there sexually and emotionally.

"Save me the crap, HE is the only other person YOU'VE had sex with!" He corrected uselessly and she was even more upset.

"Listen, I'm beginning to think considering you a friend was a mistake, I want this divorce and I want you, but this is not your child. Whatever you mean by "he is impotent obviously isn't true because this baby is for him and you won't say a word regarding this any more!" She snapped and walked back into the hall.

"Are you alright?" Mrs Roberts asked as they both returned to the room, Caroline nodded, replacing her confused look with a scowl. Was this why they were happy? Because he was not clinically not capable of being a father?

"We shall be leaving now," Jason announced and Nina followed closely behind him. Caroline didn't bother to look at them as they left, Marcus raised a questioning brow but she shrugged it off.

"I'll be back, Marc." Nina said as they left the room.

"Make sure you return Nina dear! You're coming with Carol and I to the clinic!" Mrs Roberts called out to her.

"I think we should drink that. I mean, all of us but you Caroline" Marcus said and went to take out a drink from his cabinet.

Caroline stood watching his movements, she knew troubles would begin to erupt and she was apprehensive and wary of them. Her husband could not father a child? Why didn't she know? For all the things she didn't know of, she was sure this child was Marcus's and Jason would not tell her otherwise.

"This is marvelous, you know, he has always hesitated in granting me a grandchild. Nobody ever imagined it would be from... well, you." Alisha Roberts said as the car drove them to the hospital.

Nina sat at the front while she was tucked into the back seat with Caroline by her side.

"That's if it is truly his child." Nina added bad naturedly and Mrs Robert scoffed. "It's no time to be a pessimist. Who would glance at Marcus's wife twice?" She asked with a certainty that scared even Caroline who had been quiet all through.

"I assure you both that this is Marcus's baby. I could give you all the details of the night if you so please." She told them and they laughed, though an awkward mirth.

"Please, keep it to yourself." Nina grounded in a very harsh tone.

They got to the hospital and Alisha and Caroline went in to see the doctor. While Nina waited outside, she roamed about the hospital as her scheming brain moved two miles per hour.

She went over to the reception and listened as two nurses spoke harshly about her patient. A pregnant patient who just gave birth to twins and how annoying the mother was.

"Some mothers can be so annoying," she added and they looked at her with amusement.

"What do you know about expectant mothers?" They asked her, eyeing her over.

The nurses noticed she looked familiar, had that model look about her and immediately they were eager to please.

"I do know they take your man and pin him down with their pregnancy." She responded and went into a full blown act of a grieving girlfriend.

"They act like the world revolves around them." One of the nurses said spitefully and Nina smirked.

"Are you a mother?" Nina asked her with a raised brow and soft smile.

"No, not anytime soon in fact." The nurse responded, just then the other nurse was called away and it was left with Nina, the spinster nurse and the distracted receptionist.

"Babies take up your whole life. Look what it did to my own relationship." Nina said again, playing the sympathy card.

"I cannot imagine. If there was anything you could do about it, I would be delighted to assist you" The nurse added, excited that she had made a friend in an influential woman.

"Maybe there is, I would be in touch. I do have a question," Nina quickly told her before she walked away.

"Oh sure, what is it?" The nurse asked, eyes brighter as Nina brought out a wad of cash from her bag, flaunting it dramatically.

"What is the worst thing you could do to a new baby that would hurt its mother?" She asked her and the nurse stood still.

"That's odd. I would say killing him but it's a mere suggestion compared to swapping it. That usually is not tragic." The nurse responded in a way that suggested this was not her first time doing it.

"How long have you been working here?" Nina asked her and the nurse seemed even more eager to please.

"Five years, I know these things. It's fun and gets boring sometimes though," the nurse responded and Nina knew she didn't like her but in that moments are wild thoughts were even wilder so she drew closer to her.

"What do you say we strike a deal?" Nina asked her and the nurses eyes brightened, no one was paying any mind to them.

"Go on,"
